  • Dwane 'the rock' Johnson playing the drums!!!! NO WAY!!!!!!!!!

  • круто!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this guy goes nuts!! watching him makes me happy xD

  • i need to go practice.

  • @astfrom111

    you don't know shit.

  • @astfrom111 you are exiled from this world.

  • @astfrom111 Somebody please teach him something about music. Obviously you don't understand. Just try to play what he's doing with his tone quality, and maybe you'll be as famous as he is.

  • Wow What a Ride Alpha to Omega I never heard Barret or Shorty go out like this!

love you Del ,Merci Babette Ory nee Oryskid

  • where's luis bonilla??

  • Damn, this really is Wycliffe saying "Respect My Authoritah!" You'd really have to bust your chops to imitate this.

  • Wycliffe is a good trombonist, but it seems like he always plays energetically and loud despite the song.

  • @XxBESTEVARxXz That is simply not true. I have a CD with him playing ALL styles. It's called "The Gospel Truth", you should check it out.

  • sh***! This is one if the greatest trombonist of all time. He sounds like he is single tonguing a high F, At that tempo....its not easy to say the least. The best part is that his high register sounds effortless even if it is aggressive.. It goes perfectly with the intention of the solo. Hats off to Wycliffe!

  • I wish we could hear slide hamptons solo he is such a great trombonist.

  • not Wycliffe, but the guy at the far right

  • @s3si1u yeah thats slide hampton on the end. Wish they had his solo on this too. Wycliffe is a beast and a half, but so is Slide. Different players but equally virtuosos.

  • @Owunthrizzel yeah i figured out who he is since then, amazing. Even though i'm primarily a classical trombonist, the versatility of every jazz trombonist makes me gravitated toward the genre more and more. They're all so great but so different

  • Is this musical? Or technical bluster?

  • @freeeeeeedy. Musical.

  • YEah he was in the marching band FAMU MARCHING 100 to be exact

  • noooooooooo !!!!! nada ke hacer marcaron historia!

  • Dude, You obviously do not know what music is, or jazz is. He is better than you will ever be and I want to see you try that shit. You suck. Don't talk.

  • he sure is one of the best trombone players in the world, but I still don't really like his style, it's too much based on power, it's not very subtle, unlike some other great players who are more focused on their tone and smoothness. I think caravan is more suitable for that kind of playing. but he still has a great technique!

  • left handed bone!

  • no he'es not he'es playing right handed........ where did you get left handed?

  • Slide Hampton plays left handed. thats how he learned.

  • some of the best and hardest tricks on the bone... ever !

  • Damn Wycliffe is killin' it!

  • Brotha's got soul...

  • Wyclifffe makes that bone look like a toy!

  • who is he and where can I find him?xDDD

    this is amazing.

(i know who he is. :P)

  • I got goosebumps on my back listening to this, it was THAT tight.

  • its to bad the video stops right before Slide got to solo. I mean, this quartet is just way too amazing. Wycliffe Gordon, Slide Hampton, Delfayo Marsalis, and Steve Turre? but at least Wycliffe gets to solo. best player i have ever heard.

  • Eres el mejor trombonista que he escuchado en mi vida!!! increible!!! Quiero con todas las fuerzas de mi alma, tocar como tu. Eres mi idolo W.Gordon!!!!

  • That lick at 2:42 is nice. ima have to steal that one

  • classic diminished lick

  • does anyone know what kind of trombone Wycliffe uses?

  • Edwards T302. But the bell dimentions and stuf are all customized. you can look it up on the edwards web site. i got me one. and they are some of the nicest horns out im mu oppion

  • sorry for spelling

  • Comment removed

  • I got to trade 4's with Wycliffe Gordon, that was the craziest experience ever!

    He is a trombone god!

  • Hey...this isn't Joe Alessi...

  • again speechless

  • Gordon good=solo )))) he has style > wecliffe forever ))))

  • hes rippin so high at sum times. what a monster

  • wow, a trombone summit. I never knew... Wycliffe is amazing. But imagine being the guy soloing after him. Poor slide. Mad name though haha

  • Wycliffe played with our band last night in Cedar Rapids IA and he was incredible!! I think he could just about out play anyone!

  • Hey what school do you go to??? i go to linn-mar and i wanna see this guy live!!!

  • dude you missed your chance, he was at Kirkwood this last April, i was there and it was phenominal. he also had a masterclass and i was at that too. this guy is incredible.

  • O cara eh muito bom!

  • Beast !!!

  • is there any brass left on that bell???

  • Why no love for slide hampton? Loser...

  • I'm totally speechless.

  • W-O-W.

  • I like Wycliffe's bazooka blastin style.

I feel that way too sometimes, that's when I take my sliphorn out by the traintracks.

  • Shit man! Do you think he needed to get a new trombone after this?

  • holy 'shaving cream'. I've never c'n tht n my life. nd there was a part n there tht sounded like gun shots the way he blew those notes out. dang, idk how he didnt blow off his chops. he's fantastic

  • did you cut Slide?

  • Wycliffe has mad chops, and hes a great trombonist. I just could never get into that loud, rough, sort of bluesy sound that he plays though. i always prefered guys like Carl Fontana, john Fedchock, and Bill Watrous. That has to do with style though, he is still amazing, I just dont like the style.

  • I really respect this guy for his chops, but I just don't like the way he plays, too aggressive for my taste.

  • i agree with what geekbeeterupper1991 had to say 8 months ago. wycliffe and jj johnson are on entirely different levels of playing style. jj johnson is known for his smooth, hip melodic lines, but towards the 60's he definitely entered into that realm similar to wycliffe's style of a lot of attacks and a more aggressive style. wycliffe certaintly is the leader of the packer in that style but has anyone seen him playing in the style of jj? from everything i've heard it isn't played enough.

  • what register is he in?? dear goodness

  • hes frm augusta ga. my home town. augusta trombonists are the best

  • he played with me when our jazz program had it's annual evening of jazz and i was in the middle school jazz ensemble and he played three songs with us.... it was pretty cool. now i am waiting to see who we get to come this year.... it's gonna be pretty fun...

  • My high school band director was able to get him to come and it was amazing. We would fund raise all year to get a big name come in for our last concert. He did his solo version of "Amazing Grace" and it was amazing. One of those moments in jazz where it just leaves you speechless

  • HE did a masterclass at the sydney conservatorium

    I was there

  • very different trombone players right there

wycliffe is and pretty much has always been a show off. u cant deny the fact that he has revolutionized trombone playing by the "special effects" he can do with his horn

  • The Special Effects he uses were used way before him actually...For instance, listen to the solos on the old Ellington recordings, Nanton does those effects(Fluttering and Growling) constantly (Some J.J. Solos too). The didgeridoo effect was originally done by an Avent Garde Trombonist, can't recall his name. Wycliffe is just the first one to really tie all of them together. He said something to the same effect in a Master Class I was at he did two years ago.

  • :-O the soloist is incredible :-0

  • im gonna see Wycliffe Gordon in 2 days - live at the Manly Jazz Festival n_n

  • im liking the song more and more every time i listen to it im gona be playing this is in my jazz band=]

  • Wycliffe is the man. I got to play and hear him at Stanford Jazz Workshop. I wish Turre took a solo as well, he's a beast and he went to my High School.

  • and this is a hella hard song to solo on

  • haha sucks for the guy thats goes after WC, he probly sounded like shit in comparison

  • hey man, that's Slide Hampton... one of the greatest around. Any jazz trombonist today (including Wycliffe) owes alot to Slide

He has a different style, Wycliffe is more BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHDGFLKJASHGDFGJSDKJFGHFG and Slide is more ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    word

  • oh ok. ya not to disrespect but i was just saying. ive never heard hamptom play so i had no idea

  • I HAVE to agree with you about Slide--a LEFT-HANDED trombone player, no less. I used to see him when he'd come play in CT from NY. Not only is he an excellent trombonist, he is one of the most gracious people I've ever met. Wycliffe is in great company. I saw Wycliffe in New Haven, CT this past weekend. He BLEW me away. Phenomenal.

  • I got to see Wycliffe live in Eau Claire in April and our college band played a song with him and it was just unreal how much control he had over his horn in every aspect.

  • i was there too

  • Is WC on a King 2B?

  • Probably not, because as far as I know he's plays exclusively Edwards. People do change, but I haven't heard any different.

  • No he is not because i have the same horn from edwards and the bells they make are the size of a 2B plus bells.

  • He played one in his early career but he's on an Edwards now.

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • that's my dad!!!

  • corey whats happening bruh!! its your uncle eric out in california.. give me a ring 805 403 1275

  • Hey Man, this is the greatest musician in any genre on the planet! Anyone who criticizes him, I don't even know what to say.

  • Wycliffe definitely has chops...but in jazz music its more about the musicality rather than the technique. I emphasize melodic phrases, and a sense of direction of the solo with a melodic contour. Wycliffe's playing consists too much of technique related licks...and his fast lines are choppy and unrefined. I will give the man the credit for having some amazing chops, but I will also criticize his musicality.

  • Ok lets see your better musicality. This guy has amzing melodic lines within his soloing, and if you had the ear to hear them, you wouldn't have room to criticize.

  • I completely agree with you cwall08. Check out his lines on the bridge around 1:08 - that shit is baaad. Also check out how he's listening to the piano's comping (for example at 0:44 and 1:56) and how he hooks up on the hits at 2:15. Technique-related licks? Sure, he uses them in a couple places, but they don't detract from the solo.

Just because the tempo is too fast for you to perceive all the hip shit that's going on doesn't mean it's not musical.

  • i visited the lucas theather in sav'h,ga and had a chance to see Mr. Gordon perform!!! i was in shock! he is the best that i know. He's funny, yet sensitive and he wasn't afraid to share with us the way he feels about his musical family and personal family.the best way to discribe my first encounter of him is SHOCK & AH. GREAT JOB MR. GORDON THE MUISCAL WORLD HAS ONE OF THE GREATEST! HOPE U COME BACK NEXT YEAR.

  • Jazz virtuoso!

  • What I love about Wycliffe is that everytime he plays he brings more energy than any other performer. A lot of times he will just replace harmonic and melodic ideas with sound effects that pretty much completely leave the realm of "jazz" trombone playing but it still is this burning energy. Love it.

  • ok i play trombone and i will admit one thing. playing music is not just playing hi notes. BUT if u can play them hi and in good style like he is, then u will sound good....ur just mad cuz u could nvr do that.... (hopefully that will be me someday :))

  • Personally, i love his playing, and i like alot of other guys too, Rosolino, Fontana, their just all diffrent not better or worst, just different. When your at that high of a level you cant realy compare anymore.

  • im in high school i have been playing for 6 or 7 years now, he is oficially my favorite trombone player. his style is so unique.

  • gosh i have so much respect for this guy. his chops are freakishly good and hes so expressive at the same time.

  • man this ensembles really tight

  • Being a good musician dosent mean being able to play really high. It has to do with tenchique. Abilty to still grow as a musican. Just be caues you can hit the highest note on your instrument. You have to understand the lanuage and be able to adjust. Not just play one song. But all different types. Plus acknowledge the people before and use them as inspriation. Not just think that you are some God of music.

  • dude you are effin stupid as hell dude... wycliffe is the most amazing t-bone player ever. I saw him in concert 2 nights ago... He has more musicianship and technique than you will ever have in 10 lifetimes. Respect the best dude. Just because you arent as good doesnt meen to diss them. learn respect

  • i would have to say even though wy's lips are better, i think jay jay is a better bone player in all honesty. just because he does everything

  • Dude, what the fuck are you talking about? He never said he was 'some god' and of course it's inspired by what came before; IT'S AN ELLINGTON COVER RTARD! Also, Wycliffe is the best at jazz, he can play bare pieces (it's not a song because there's no singer idiot).

    You suck artemsis2121.

  • Awesome! hey men you're magic i'm a trumpet player and i have played trombone and i can say i've never seen anything like that in my life!

  • Bioman, even though I HIGHLY doubt that you can hit a double Bb, it wouldn't matter if you could. It doesn't prove you're a better player. A double Eb is a perfectly acceptable place for a trombone player's top range. You remind me of the trumpet players who idolize Maynard's screaming and can't play a fucking C scale.

Gordon's a great player, a little wooly, but very inventive, even though I prefer Robin Eubanks as far as modern bone players go.

  • that was the greatest and craziest trombone playing i have ever heard!! i play the trombone and i dont think i will ever be able to play like that in my life!

  • Why would you want to? Come up with your own bag!

  • oh my good!!! what has He done!!!

  • amazing

    bravo

  • Great technique and unique style. It's a shame biowoman63 can't see past his own ego to appreciate this. Strange how HE'S not playing on Youtube, just talking shit.

  • that was pretty badass!

  • Have you ever played next to Wycliffe??? I HAVE!!! He is the most incredible trombone player and music educator I have ever met!!! NO ONE has a right to insult him. He's an absolutely fantastic person and one of the finest trombone players in the world. DO NOT INSULT WYCLIFFE!!!!

  • I have too. Friggin' insane. People who insult them have absolutely no idea what they're talking about; the guy teaches at Juilliard for a reason, and that reason is not that he sucks. ;)

  • I have also had the honor of playing with him. He and his very charming girlfriend came in to a club I was playing at and our drummer invited him to sit in. It was an on-the-job master class and easily the best musical experience I've ever had. If you listen close, you can hear the respect he has for every important player that's come before him. He's also a complete gentleman - no ego, no attitude, just a generous artist and consummate professional.

  • Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but are people actually insulting Wycliffe Gordon!? How many critically acclaimed CD's have you made? Bioman63 you most certainly do not know what you are talking about. Post something showing how great you are, or shut the hell up.

  • Whether you like him or not doesn't give you the right to insult him and claim you're better than him. Maybe your opinion will matter when you're a renowned professional.

I don't like John Coltrane all that much, but I respect him as one of the greatest musicians to ever live and acknowledge the fact that his skill and understanding of music is more than i can hope to ever achieve in my wildest dreams.

  • Whatever you're a fag if you can't respect his musical talent, EVEN if you don't like it personally, you know he's good man.

  • yer you're entitled to your opinion but you don't have to share it with everyone else, if you don't like him, just move on, and let us people who do like him, like him in peace

  • You guys are losers, sorry!

    Nice Wycliffe!

  • my all-county jazz band got to play with him....it was fuckin awesome. he's just as nice as he is good. not to mention that he could play louder than the whole band.....

  • hes so dam loud. its nuts to hear in person.

  • I agree that Slide's solo would have put this whole conversation about Wycliffe's solo in perspective.

  • sorry, you know Eb in the staff? play that Eb scale, to the Eb umm 2 lines above the staff, then play Eb scale again. so its like 3 lines above the high high Bb..

  • wow, i was kidding (i changed my name) but anyway, when i said that, i could only hit the high C, now i actually can hit the double high Eb :)

  • if he isn't musical at all, why would he be playing in the ensemble in the first place? you should learn about basic skills, such as researching your argument before presenting it.

  • hahaha only a few people can make a solo extremely musical and at the time amusing i love it

  • can we get the rest of this anywhere? pretty nice, but i'd like to hear slide's solo too lol? plzzzzzz

  • workd cant discribe that solo and only wycliffe can do that

  • his control is insane....na, HIM is general is insane.

  • Wycliffe, you the f'n man!!!!

  • god that's crazy, my highest note so far is a high Eb, an octive off the high Eb

  • Just for the record, how long have you been playing?

  • Prove it. Record play something like that, and then maybe someone will actually believe you.

Most likely you are a little freshmen trombone player who cant even hit an F.

    Wycliffe is da man!!!

  • You douchebag. The last thing the music world needs is asshole "musicians" like yourself.

  • You talk shit with even more ease.

  • WHO CARES

just cause you can play high doesn't mean you can actually PLAY

  • Dude, do you know who this is? This is possibly the most respected jazz trombonist on Earth. Not only can he play super high, he has amazing variation in tone, his flutter tongue is essentially unrivalled, his harmonic devices are like some kind of mega jazz. You are just an idiot who tries to critisize gods.

  • Wycliffe is amazing. Do you have the rest of the vid? I'd love to hear Slide's Solo at least. :)

  • fuck yes!

  • Wycliffe helped at a camp that I was at (SJW- Stanford Jazz Workshop) and he is one of the most amazing musicians that I have ever seen. Flat out astounding.

  • daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!
