Scary???? I used to be so afraid of flying and to me this is nothing! We've flown to St. Thomas at least 15 times and this is a normal, smooth, landing.
First time I flew in was in the 80's a twin prop. When leaving, one of the engines wouldn't start and they had someone actually spinning the prop until it finally started. Most recently, we were backing out an the power disconnected from the tug. We sat on the plane for 30 min while the navigation systems booted up. I joked that they got the windows blue screen of death. All this before the long flight over water.
Cape Air is scary (very light weight plane w/ no co-pilot). There was not cross wind here which is typical as well. Now for fun, try Seaborne Airlines (the local sea plane)!
Nothing scary here, especially since it appears to be a larger Delta Airlines plane. Try landing in a smaller island hopper plane from Puerto Rico or one of the other islands ! The runway here a ways back had a small mountain cliff that had to be removed because planes leaving couldn't clear it with a full load of fuel. They took on minimal fuel and relanded in St Croix only 30 miles away, topped off there, before beginning a longer flight.
@amadeus49 one plane crashed into the mountian and tht kinda did most of the work they blew the rest down and another plane couldnt stop in time and the pilot turned and crashed into a gas station... (these were all before i was born in 1996... my grandfather told me all these stories happened when my mom was a kid...) the landing experience is "scary" like a roller coaster... when yu first get on its scary the second time its... ehh not so bad after tht yu get used to it...
There is nothing like boarding a plane in in the Northeast U.S. in the middle of the Winter, flying for a few hours, only to come in for a landing on that tropical island...complete with palm trees and blue water. That landing was not too bad...you should have tried it back in 1982 aboard a 727, and the runway was a little less than 5000 feet long. It was quite interesting.
have been on more scarier landings than that i.e portugal and latvia. latvia being more scary. people that have been to portual will know what i am talking about.
I've done many times. Not that scary. Flying into Montego Bay, Jamaica is scarier and Mexico City is scary because there's always turbulance and you come in right over skyscrapers.
I fly into st.thomas every year in fact im traveling there on the 28th of july and it isnt scary for nothing (or maybe i just think dat cuz ive been flying there since i was lyk 1 week old) try Tegucigalpa Toncotin i'm used to it too but take it for a spin. LOL
Every time any plane lands anywhere, it's gotta hit the runway spot-on. So it's automated these days: the airport "reels the aircraft in" so it's on target at every moment on approach. But if you're gonna crash, it doesn't matter much whether it's into water, buildings, forests or a team of chorus girls dancing the can-can: it's gonna be equally bad either way. So this is no more or less scary than landing on any equal-sized airstrip anywhere in the world, unless you're a jittery control freak.
I live on the the biggest of the three Virgin Islands, and trust me, I'm glad, it might not look scary, but the landing strip is actually a thin peninsula type of thing and I've seen it from driving next to it, and plains look so big when they land on it...it looks like it can tear off lol Never landed actually on it though, I get to St. Thomas from St. Croix on a seaplane.
All of you who thinks its not scary? what if the pilots were flying in fog? and they flew nxt to rwy and landed in sea, if u do it in r/l u will land on the grass, maybe ovverun but at least not everyone will die? Not the scariest places though.
Geesh, your a pilot? Then I think you should know that no ATP would land parallel to the runway in fog...ever heard of an ILS or are you still at the piper cub level on MS Flight sim?
no :S I guess so looking at it, but I'm not sure if thomas virign islands has ils, and if its a visual and you have 10metres visibility, erm dobut that would happen. I guess so tassy it doesn't matter where u crash.
But if you were landing and you didn't know where the runway was at passneger view, like at juliana u might not know theres an airport behind you, you might get scared I think thats what hes getting at.
@PilotCodzuy Its called an ILS, or Instrument Landing System. or possibly even an RNAV approach. They don't just fly blindly trying to remember where it was...
uhh...yeah...that was all normal procedure to me. Keep in mind your landing next to the ocean, and it's probably really windy, so any kind of "bad landing" is probably a really great one, given the circumstances.
Haven't seen our airport in awhile, all of a sudden I feel for some dumb bread and cheese, butter bread, johnny cake, and of course a saltfish pate. That was a good look for me.
Normal landing, his after landing PA announcement could be a little smoother but I give it a 8/10. I think the word "scary" should be replaced with "exciting". just my 0.02$
Thanks...I just may, But we're loving all the attention the video is getting. Everyday the kids come home from school and wonder who else saw their video. Thanks!!!
Forget Innsbruck, forget St Thomas, Try Cannes or Baia Mare Romania on a windy day.. Hell Even Vnokovo Moscow during winter brings more goose bumps...
Nice scenery! The landing is normal, firm touchdown for this type approach to this runway which is fairly shorter then usual but sufficient. The aircraft appears to be a Delta 737-300.A landing into Kahalui Maui would be much rougher or even San Diego due to the sudden drop on approach after clearing the runway threshhold.Have been on many, many flights with rough landings especially those with 30knt crosswinds.:)
What is so dumb about it. Remember the big plane crash it had on the airport before it was exteneded? the American Airlines. I don't remember the year.
This is not even remotely scary, if you travel more you will realize that landing on any airport where it adjoins to any body of water has a perception of scare. The island has no tail wind to deal with, no drastic change in altitude to deal with mountains plus there are over 10 daily jet flights to and from the island without any incidence. But, you have to admit it was a beautiful approach, with the scenary and all though.
Didn't sound like you were scared to me. Also, I think Delta has nice planes. they have gotten rid of the 727s, and have new 737s for short hops. They have the 777s for the long trips, the 767 and 757s as well.. not to mention the shiny new commuter planes that they have..FLY DELTA JETS...

I have landed at BVI, USVI, Puerto Rico, Vieques, and Culebra. By far- hands down Culebra is the scariest. The runway is tiny (small planes only)between 2 small mountains at the edge of the bay the approach takes you between two mountain peaks that are 200 feet away. past the peaks is upwind buffeting the plane, then the pilot has to go into a dive to the valley where the runaway is. not bad during good weather, a frightfest in bad.
i live on st thomas and the landing isnt as bad as you all are making it out to be there are other islands in the caribbean whose airport make landing 1 billion times worst that what u will ever experience in st thomas...however THANK YOU FOR VISITING DO COME AGAIN
I've been there, too, and my landing was about 100 times worse. It was night, cross-winds blowing HARD, and the plane touched down about 10 times before finally sticking. Thanks for posting your vid!
I guess Chuck Norris hadn't visited these islands yet because the word Virgin is still in them.

Not scary enough to stop you using electronic equipment during landing (critical stage of the flight).
Cabin Crew instruct you not to do this for a good reason, not for the good of their health.
However, you obviously know better........
