It's kind of funny that Jerome Robbins made this version of a Russian folk dance into the defacto "Jewish Dance", especially since he based it on his memory of a comedian at a wedding. Ah, well, Jews may come from any part of the world, but we can br proud to have this as an official dance!
My college marching band did a Russian themed show and near the end we played this music while our colorguard did the bottle dance. It was an epic moment. :)
All the Abrahamic religions are full of nonsense commands, and a large portion of their followers do not adhere to them (including Moslems, who drink and dance). Kind of a fucking stupid generalisation you have there, my friend.
What tallent! This is a great scene that I will always enjoy. To the naysayers, I can only say...too bad for your distrust...I have seen this done at weddings.
@willrich256 my friend does photography predominantly Jewish weddings, I've seen it as well, I'd suggest those naysayers may have their own axe to grind against Jews in general - oh and no I am not Jewish at all, I refuse though to buy into this hatred.
I know what you mean. I was new to the stage when I did the bottle dance in a community theater production of Fiddler. On opening night, when we stood up at the end of the dance and dropped the bottles into our hands, I was blown away by the thunderous applause. I still remember thinking at the time (50 years ago), "so this is why people go into show business!". Same thing happened at every performance. (cont''d)
(cont'd) That experience got to me--and I have appeared in many stage productions since then--including several professional productions of Fiddler with three different Tevyes: Jan Peerce, Ed Ames and Theodore Bikel. As you say, wonderful show.
Someone knows what is the video where Perchik italks about being correct when a man and a woman dance and nvites to dance to Hodel and everybody is surprised?????
@paulbortaolazzo my excuse is that 1. the bible promoted murder, racism, rape, and those things are bad. I luv everyone as long as they're a good person. 2. I'M A JEW, AND JEW'S ARE AWESOME BADASSES. Plus Mary and Jonah (those are the names of Jesus's parents right) were Jews. Jews were the first to believe in one God. Jesus was borna Jew, but like me, thinks about the fact that everyone can believe what they want. What would it be like if the Jews got mad a Jesus for not being Jewish?
@PaNdAbEaR618100 lol i realized that yesturday. iwas just sitting there randomly and then i was like "JOESPH! THAT'S HIS NAME!" but thank God i was alone. But thanks anyway =)
Jews ARE pretty awesome. Im Roman Catholic and in school we studied the Torah because we had respect for the Messiah for he was Jewish. I like the Jewish faith and everything but Im not sure if I could keep up with the diet Kosher is too hard and the bible didnt PROMOTE murder, rascism, rape and other things they were just there to show the unfaithfulness of the people and how God posed none of it it was in the Torah too, so it wasnt just the rest of the Bible. :I Just saying.
@PaNdAbEaR618100 Lol, thanks. But Judaism has different level, i guess. I'm reformed, so that's the least religious. Girls can do the same things as boys (get bat mitzvphaed, sit next to them in synogauge, dance with them, etc.) whereas othrodox Jews (the most religious) can't. Plus i don't really celebrate Shabbat that often and if you're reformed you don't have to keep Kosher. With reformed everything's pretty much optional. As for with the bible, i read that they were in a (continued)
I Live in Europe where like, if your Jewish. Youre an Othidox Jew. Plus Im pretty sure that Kosher IS hard I have a friend who is A Jew and during passover she was sick for a week because she has a fragile stomach and. . . well lets just say that Kosher food isnt her favorite. Dont you have to eat like bitte herbs and stuff like that?
@PaNdAbEaR618100 For the 8 days of Passover (Pesach) most Jews (even Reform) will eat only kosher food that is further restricted to exclude any traces of leavening agents, such as bread, corn, rice and some kinds of beans. The "bitter herbs" (often horseradish) are used for the formal ceremony (Seder), before dinner. "Unleavened bread" (Matzo) is also used for the ceremony and is generally eaten throughout the week, though there is no requirement to do so.
I am not Jewish, but I love Jewish traditions.I can watch this movie over and over. This bottle dance has some meanning about life. Can someone explane me this dance ?
think about the golden calf and recognize the "tradition"-melody unter the line between the music of the bottle dance. I would interpretate the film sequence that they forget their traditions and pray in end wild and (maybe drunk) to the golden calf. which can also be the symbol of the (alcohol? looks like beer-bottles) on the heads.
@ExtensiveBlaze Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you just insult my people? Because I don't take kindly to that. Unless you're just insulting the Russian part, in which case I'm slightly more OK.
@inamerica Dont think you own all jewish persons, so its not YOUR people ,) But yes I have to excuse my self. Of course I mean the people with pretend to be jewish religionary in russia during these time. Orthodox are the father arent he and the children are loughing about his traditions?I am sorry if I hurt your spirituality. I dont want be antisemitistic! It just tryed to interpretate these mocie scene in a political way and put my believe in the round the social destiny is connected with it
@TheSilentOne50 : why do you ask me. seems like you have an better idea why the jewish (the movie is speaking from) were ending hunted away out of russia, because they were backstabbing their religional traditions. ask them or your own ideology. keep your sexist shit by your self. Its not any effecting my emotional situation about your not existing arguments.
@ExtensiveBlaze sexist? you're a fucking idiot, plain and simple. The Jews had nothing to do and HAVE nothing to do with the Devil, if you think so, you probably also think the earth is still flat. Go crawl back in your hole and admire Hitler.
my high school did fiddler on the roof for our musical this year, and they did this dance pretty much EXACTLY. no tricks to keep the bottle on eithor. (except it was plastic so it wouldnt shatter) they kept it on all three nights, and it was freeking sexy to watch. :D
So funny, never seen any Chinese men so united and can dance together like this.:) When your mind is so clear, you can also think super fast. Is tall is a blessing? While the most handsome man I think is still King George. :) haha.:)
It's one of my favorite parts of the movie. Must have watched it over fifty times. So sad what happens afterwards though. one day I'll try it out. Then see if I can still do it after having emptied a bottle or two. XD
i call shenanigans! they had to have had the bottle glued, because for me the routine would have been over about 15 seconds in when i dropped and broke the bottle lol. but i'm clumsy so i say dance on, awesome rabbis, dance on =)
Not to sounds like a fitness nut but I can't imagine the core strength it would take to balance those bottles for that long... those men must have been slipping in some serious ab workouts between all that torah reading :)
Most (all?) cultures have some of their best traditions surrounding weddings. Heck, I guess you could even have a good time at a wasp wedding if you drink enough ;0)
Love this dance <3 Love being Jewish :P and just like @MVObooks it doesn't matter the religion anyone can enjoy this and everyone has there traditions.. just look at the song tradition from this movie haha. i also love the fact that me and my best friend play sprintze and beilka <3
I just hope that anyone watching this film will be sure they see it letterbox. I just watched this scene on HBO and had to come find it here to see this incredible dance (and the bar scene). The film has been badly trimmed for TV and you don't even see all the dancers.
my high school is doing this for the spring musical and i get to do the bottle dance. im a girl. lol.. plus im the solo daner at the very beginning of this dance. haha.
Our highschool did this play last semester, and I was cast in it. I remember watching this part, thinking, "Boy, I'm glad I don't have to do that!" BUT THEN GUESS WHAT HAPPENED!
Still, I had a ton of fun in the bottle dance, fiddler on the roof is an amazing play.
we're doing Fiddler as our school musical, and the bottle dance is my absolute favorite part, especially 2:12-2:23. our bottle dancers are doing this exact dance and it is SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOD
Why o why dont catholics have these pwn things at their weddings. I am so marrying a jewish guy, just so i have an excuse to have this performed on my wedding day
@Onigiri25 not all jewish weddings are like this. Most don't have the bottle dance. They do however lift the bride and groom up in chairs and do the horrah (sp?). Plus jewish guys make great husbands.
Coolest freaking dance ever in musical theatre history( up there with "Make 'em laugh" from Singin' in the Rain and That guy dancing on the ceiling during the stage version of Mary Poppins).
for me this scene expresses the essential core of being a human being. All cultures, everywhere, throughout history, give praise to the divine and express joy through music and dance. I get teary-eyed every single time I watch this. It's sublime. : )
@zgggggggggg I don't think it really means anything. Just a bunch a skillfully awesome people who want to show off that they can dance with bottles on their head. Or do you mean the movie? In that case they are just celebrating a wedding.
When I first saw this scene when the movie came out in 1973, I was awestruck and everytime I see it still sends chills down my spine on the perfect precision the dancers. It a great way to celebrate a joyous event, no matter if you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or what ever. Weddings are a joyous time for the couple who are getting married.
i tink evry1 fights cuz we nvr will really see each other so it doesnt bother us cuz ppl online dont really seem lik real ppl so lotsa ppl dont think b4 they say stuffs
Yep, bible morality is cherry picked. If ppl took all morality in the bible it would be a terrible time to live in. Morals come from being social animals.
my school did this, i was part of the stage crew and the hats had to have sponges in them to keep the hats in place. the dance was flawless and the dance teacher who always has a cricitism had to admit to the girls doing the bottlwe dance that it was flawless and i joked saying that meant the dance teacher was disappointed and she agreed with me :)
Last year, my school did this play for theater, and the bottles were stuck to the hats with velcro. Both performances, one of the bottle dancers' bottle fell backwards, but a little strip of velcro kept it from completely falling off, so the bottle was just hanging on the back of the hat.
This is a wedding dance, a celebration of Tzitel's marriage to Motel, the taylor. Then in the middle of all the merriment, the russian police, including the rioters broke up the wedding and destroyed everything, including the marriage's sacred bond between the wife and the husband.
@bowserhunter1 : yeah they really looking well, like in beginning of a war and in the end like me when I was a teenager and wanted just kill all my pain with any drug. And recognice the performance of the dance. it looks like a "sun-wheel" who is turning LEFT arround. thats a bad symbol because ....... ah anyway. I am interessted to learn more about the history of the jewish in time before russia revolution.
lol. the torah. that helped the westernised world a great deal didnt it. the only good thing to ever come out of religion is conflict. the world would be a better place without it.
It's kind of funny that Jerome Robbins made this version of a Russian folk dance into the defacto "Jewish Dance", especially since he based it on his memory of a comedian at a wedding. Ah, well, Jews may come from any part of the world, but we can br proud to have this as an official dance!

I just hope that anyone watching this film will be sure they see it letterbox. I just watched this scene on HBO and had to come find it here to see this incredible dance (and the bar scene). The film has been badly trimmed for TV and you don't even see all the dancers.

@saravonsega94 My school is currently performing Fiddler on the Roof as well! I am actually one of the bottle dancers :)

Why o why dont catholics have these pwn things at their weddings. I am so marrying a jewish guy, just so i have an excuse to have this performed on my wedding day
Onigiri25 1 year ago
@Onigiri25 not all jewish weddings are like this. Most don't have the bottle dance. They do however lift the bride and groom up in chairs and do the horrah (sp?). Plus jewish guys make great husbands.
Athenademi360 8 months ago
when i get married we are sooo doing this broskI!
jakeo96 1 year ago
I'd have to glue the bottle to my head, and even then it'd fall off.

@MangaIpod Actually, the hats help a lot
themranonemus 1 year ago
@MangaIpod It's easier then you think, just need a really soft hat and to walk slowly. And practice... lots of practice.

so whats the story on this dance, what does it mean?
zgggggggggg 1 year ago
@zgggggggggg I don't think it really means anything. Just a bunch a skillfully awesome people who want to show off that they can dance with bottles on their head. Or do you mean the movie? In that case they are just celebrating a wedding.

When I first saw this scene when the movie came out in 1973, I was awestruck and everytime I see it still sends chills down my spine on the perfect precision the dancers. It a great way to celebrate a joyous event, no matter if you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or what ever. Weddings are a joyous time for the couple who are getting married.

Yep, bible morality is cherry picked. If ppl took all morality in the bible it would be a terrible time to live in. Morals come from being social animals.

The visual part of this video is amazing; BUT the SOUND is SO LOW, that can hardly be heard.
Van you please re-upload the video - if possible - with better sound quality. thx

my school did this, i was part of the stage crew and the hats had to have sponges in them to keep the hats in place. the dance was flawless and the dance teacher who always has a cricitism had to admit to the girls doing the bottlwe dance that it was flawless and i joked saying that meant the dance teacher was disappointed and she agreed with me :)

hey guys people would have morals even without religious teaching i reckon
Maxi15342 1 year ago
Last year, my school did this play for theater, and the bottles were stuck to the hats with velcro. Both performances, one of the bottle dancers' bottle fell backwards, but a little strip of velcro kept it from completely falling off, so the bottle was just hanging on the back of the hat.
Hilarious.
