@Twilight37 Yes the Travis live version on Jools Holland is better than this also Travis are always better live and thanks for the comment ;-) i'm going to look for that version just now .
@blankme206 As far as I know, you can only get it by acquiring the 'Igby Goes Down' soundtrack, and there you have it: track number one is this wonderful cover!
A very poignant, faithful cover of an amazing song. Travis are definitely talented. I'm seeing Fran Healy (solo) live in August. He's opening for Keane on their North American summer tour.
Both Smith and the Band versions are better in my book, but this is still nice, and I have to give these guys for reminding me of the existence of this song when I saw them open for Oasis in Berkeley in 2000.
..........................why do people always use the exact same music (as in chords/instrument for instrument/drums line) for covers? If i wanted to hear this I would listen to the band, cause the band does it a lot better. They should atleast put in some of thier own interpretation
I would normally agree with you, but in the case of the The Weight, I find it to be such a perfect song, anybody can play it the exact same way and still make it completely their own. Its like the universally perfect song.
It's a cover, as a musician myself I can tell you that covers are nothing more than interpretations and open to our personal preferences.
Bands generally cover songs they themselves like, and a lot of times a cover is about showing your love for a particular song or band.
I can see why some people would prefer this cover over the original or other covers, it's just a matter of taste. This is actually my second least favorite of the covers on youtube.
what these newer bands dont get, is that its NOT supposed to be a light song. like, at all. they're recording it in their AC professional studios when really they should go to the country and record it in a barn after living there for a few months with NO money or anything that we're spoiled with. the band toured with dylan and afterwrads wrote this. that should say enough.
Last tune on the movie "Igby Goes Down" .I thought it was a girl singing, but nevertheless a worthy rendition. When the intro started playing in the movie I thought it was Greg Allman's version of These Days.
sorry kid but reading shit on wikipedia is wrong. bob dylan wrote it and the band did a tour with him where they played it.
and of all the people who have played this song the bands version NEVER made charts, so even if they were the first, to many people did it better, so "the band" is pretty much garbage.
how does it feel/ to reply to a comment/ that i wrote months ago/ and be a total doucher/ even tho it was on dylan's website/ that he wrote the song/ and now im mocking your shitty attempt/ to make like a rolling stone about garbage (me)/ but your not even worth trying to make it rhyme.
P.S. "the Band" is garbage and so uncreative that they couldnt even come up with a good artist name so dont even try to argue because your uneducated and probably a fuckin hillbilly

also kid, stop getting so mad when somebody tells you something you don't think is true, this is the internet not real life, if it was real life I'm sure just about anybody that knows anything about the band would want to slap you in the noggin right now. pathetic.
your still commenting as well, so your argument is invalid fuckin dumbass. suck my dick. if i were actually mad i would just leave it alone because im smart enough not to get mad at the computer. i just think people are dumbasses and i like to tell them

I think they done well here, they put on the Travis-Style which sounds quiet pretty

I agree. It's supposed to be a soulful, roughly sang, improvised and ever evolving song. Too clean for my taste. Admirable attempt though.

not to sound like a doucher but im pretty sure the band did the original on their first album as "the band" without bob dylan
the album is called "music from big pink"
and if you dont know much about the band you should watch the last waltz

robbie robertson wrote the song and thats a fact
keep talking about things that you really have no idea about if you want
youre just making yourself look like a fool
and how can you say the bands version never made the charts when thats the only song most people know from the band?
thats just silly
