Those aren't native plants! Not that it matters a huge heap, but lilac is European and rhododendrons come from Asia. Those rudbeckia you showed everywhere and which were stunningly beautiful, THOSE are native.
You have so many good ideas! I wouldn't want to give up my (pesticide-free) lawn. . . I love being out there barefoot with my pets or a book, or having a picnic on it with my kids. HOWEVER, it is landscaped with edible fruit trees and vegetables, and we are planning a vegetable garden and flower edibles in some of the surrounding space. I love being green--both in the lawn I keep and the space I surrendered to grow food. It's good for kids to see growing food and not just packaged food!

Holy cow!!!! Why are you not on HGTV yet!? I just can't get enough of this stuff! It makes me excited for spring to do some awesome things with my new yard!!! Do you have any tips for making the yard kid-friendly AND usable? We have so much space and I'd really like to see something like this!
lawn also mikes your place cooler by eliminating heat which cause your house to be cooler and use less AC. Anyway I dont need a bucket load of reasons to get edible plants in the yard, it is for me a necessity for liberating my bank account from the clutches of the tax thief.
just so you know, your music in the video is annoying. I would prefer to see the video without it since your voice is distant and harder to hear through all the noise. Even my husband commented about the music and he was a few feet away not even watching the video, but he still said it is loud & can't hear you that well. otherwise, it's a good video. thanks
yeh, ya rock P, but for a not native-english-speaking interesteaaaaaa...... the music is louder than your words.......so pleasssssse adapt the massage to what we've heard
....
lets all plant etable plants only, where ever we take a walk @ the wild side. x inge
You rock Patti! We are currently transforming our front lawn into a smaller yard by planting peach and cherry trees and we are trimming up the size of the grass by building a walkway with river rock. It looks beautiful, doesn't need watering and gets rid of some grass without sacrificing the beauty and character of the front yard. In fact, I think our yard looks so much better now. Thanks for all the inspiration! :)
If you really need a lawn substitute or you can't grow grass at all, get some bamboo. It will spread faster then wildfire and will grow anywhere just be careful cause it will take over but it doesn't need mowing
Hey Patti. Love this. Fantastic. And if you want to extend your sustainability check out the permaculture movement. books. workshops all in your local area.
I love your videos. But small farms are about to be in trouble with the new bills that are being introduced. I hope you and your viewers will look into these bills HR 875, and HR 759. These will destroy the small farm.
The bad bills HR 875, HR 759. If you love organic foods, and want to support us who are small holding farmers who produce such foods, look these up here on youtube. You will be shocked at what is coming.
I love your series. Brilliant. I wanted to ask you ... I have a chook run and would like to grow an edible vine to grow thru the ugly waist high, wire fencing. What do you recommend? Sweet potato, beans?? What would be ideal?
patti - how do you do with wintering over your chickens - any suggestions? i am also in the n.e. and had a great first summer of growing organic veggies and berries - i grew corn, tomatoes, peppers, and a ton of herbs in the front yard with embarrasment of my husband and cheers from the neighbors who i shared them with - i hope to recruit the neighbors next season - i plan to get chickens soon. i live in the metro ny area so it definately go some attention - all positive.
I have a large piece of property that i've been working on for about the past 10 years. it's so much rewarding to have a beautiful garden instead of a field of grass.
Raise your water collector off the ground as high as possible. This will let you harness gravity to create water pressure. Keep the spigot on the bottom of the collector.
I couldn't agree with you more reducing lawns and planting other types of plants and shrubs. That is what we did with our home and it looks great. It was a lot of work to transform it but it is such an incredibly relaxing yard to be in now.
@scarygary76 but don't forget if you make your own bird net, make it safe for birds(you don't want them getting trapped in the net and injured or dying)...another thing I do to keep them out of the garden a little more is make sure I have plenty of bird feeders, and always have bird seed in them. I refill every day! Make sure they have plenty of other options other than going to your plants!
dear patti/ thank you soooo much for the mail. i really don't understand what do you mean by 'heater base for my water though'. if you explain a little more about that, will be so helpful. another question is, i'm not handy, where can i purchase a portable chic coop? i'm so excited to have my own chicken now. thank you again.
dear friend/ you mentioned that you lived in nyc. so your portablechicken coop must have heating system for winter. i want to know also about the permission for city to rais chicken. i'd love to live in the city and raise chickens like you.
We are slowly making our property, to where one day, we will be completely self- sufficient. Our next buy will be Chickens. They will be used for eggs and food. Right now we're looking for a set of great blueprints for a chicken coupe. Now that I'm WAY off topic (sorry about that) I hope you have a great day!
It's nice to see this. I've never liked lawns, the idea of mowing them and up keeping them. I was always happy when wild flowers grew like dandelions. The neighbors would freak calling them weeds. They are pretty and good food for my birds. Having that perfect chem lawn is a waste of time, money and effort. Thanks for sharing this.
Very informative video but (sorry) for one thing. The music while you are talking is too loud. Some people, like myself, are hearing challenged and can't easily differentiate when there are 2 competing noise sources. It makes it nearly impossible to understand what you are saying.
For future videos, could you turn down or eliminate the music background while you are talking? It would be much appreciated so we can enjoy your videos. :) Thanks!
I know the sound mix is a bit too hot on this video. I am sorry. I hope the other ones are easier for you to hear. My brother is deaf, I hope to one day get money to close caption them.
I love your videos and I check every day to see if you have more! Love this idea - I would love to get rid of my grass (that doesn't even grow for me..lol). I also love the idea of dwarf fruit trees. :)
I'm with YOU Patti... when I see a consistent green lawn, void of weeds, I know that chemicals are in use. We've forgotten how beneficial many natural plants (weeds) can be and how truly "dead" treated lawns are. I love dandi-lions, every part is edible... didja know? :} Keep posting and com-posting Patti, you're outstanding as always!
They also had large lawns to show that they had so much wealth, that they did not need to grow food on the property

I agree, the higher the better for good gravity flow! I mostly use it for grass which is four feet lower than the area you see there.
