  • lol they were so high when they sung this song

  • I'm guessing Brian wasn't there.

  • In 93 i used to listen to this bootleg with my buddies. love that its up here,

  • this is toooo funny for the grateful dead to be covering this song. i cant stop laughing.

we dont take our trips on LSD, those like those damn hippies do, hahaha! great song!

  • we are allt he USA.. and we rock. im a cali girl with Georgia and OK roots.

  • wish they had played this with Merle

  • Merle Haggard partied with the best of them. The song is poking fun at the old school hicks.

  • @schum009 Correct! This song was written so tongue in cheek. I heard Merle and the boys rolled into Muskogee smokin' a big fat number when he decided to write a song about it.

  • Jerry can always lay down the best guitar riffs ever done on this Merle tune or any other tune for that matter.

  • I wanted the Airplane and was disapointed when they saidCaliforia Band the Beachboys but now thinking back this was once in a lifetime and the Airplane did show up at 46 St theatre in Brooklyn

  • not so rare, but nice!

  • didn't the beach boys party with the manson family a little,

  • @geekorthodox9 Dennis Wilson did for awhile.

  • @geekorthodox9 dennis wilson did...a LOT!

  • Grateful Dead doing this Song! THEY MUST have been High! F**cking Freeks!

  • @hazmat1967 Nah, they just knew good music. When I heard them do El Paso live at the 95 Highgate show...YEE HAW!

  • Merle Haggard is a great singer/songwriter

  • omg this has got to be one of the coolest recordings ever made

  • I wish the video of this concert was live, not just the music.

  • Merle is and was arigt wing tool. Smoking pot and poppin pills was just something that people did in 50s and 60s.

The beach boys were hardly followers of the hippies. Good vibrations came out in 66, Ken Kesey listened to them on the magic bus.

Drop acid and listen to California girls, you'll be a believer.

  • @fredwallin815 "smoking pot & poppin pills was just something that people did back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, Y2K, etc etc etc..... ha ha

  • @fredwallin815 The Beach Boys attempted a "SGT. Pepper's style album in 1970, that was never released. It's called, "Land-Locked", and it's their feeble attempt at psychedelic music. You can probaby hear some cuts on You Tube.

  • @MrSk1111 feeble attempt at psychedelic music? Have you heard of Good Vibrations or anything off of Smile?

  • @MrSk1111 and the Beatles made their attempt at Pet Sounds and that album was called SGT Peppers! And landlocked was not the attempt for SGT it was SMiLE.

  • @MrSk1111 That's just so ignorant. Everything you said was wrong. The dates, the name of the album, the content of the album and the complete ignoring of Smile. Stupid shit.

  • @MrSk1111

if you knew what you were talking about then you would know that the unreleased SMilE album, smiley smile, friends, and sunflower (which landlocked eventually became) were all very much psychedelic, and many would argue that the original SMiLE would be better than sgt. pepper or any other psychdelic albums, but hey its all on youtube..

  • @alexandertarangerkin While I love Pet Sounds and SMiLE (The Smile Sessions), I can honestly say neither of them is better than Pepper.

  • @ArtemisFlyingV

one likes to remember songs like LITSWD and day in the life, the reality is fixing a hole and lovely rita(what is this song about?), when im 64(does anyone else feel embarrassed listening to this or do they just skip it?) and i seriously cant handle good morning, good morning, just terrible... however Lucy, little help from my friends, leaving home, within you, sgt pepper and reprise and a day in the life are very very epic songs, but they dont make up for paul's filler...

  • @alexandertarangerkin Okay, I disagree. Am I not allowed to have my opinion? I mean it's just about as meaningful as yours.

  • @MrSk1111 When was the last time you ate lsd and listened to the beach boys! I didn't like em' until I did... Let me tell you, Brain Wilson is a beast! Pet sounds is on of the most psychedelic albums ever made

  • @MrSk1111 heh ok

  • I liked this song I never lived colse to then but it is awsome we first found out about this in music class same as puff the magic dragon a druggie song this song is pretty much sayin u ppl r dumb and should change

  • why did the Beach Boys play Okie from Muskogee? The song is about being straight edge and not doing drugs and being anti-hippie but isn't that what the majority of the crowd was made of? It seems really hypocritical.

  • @SpassMacher2000

I think the Beech Boys are singing this because they had second thoughts, misgivings about being thrown in to the drug, New Left counter culture - that was just the wave that was sweeping in and few youths wanted to be square, straight, Right Wing Conservatives, especially not in the music industry.

But, I think Mike Love and the Beach Boys were happiest as folk surf boys, in to surfer girls and endless summers, not in to hard drugs, Leftist politics.

  • @itsareligionofpeace I understand that but why choose this song at a dead concert where the audience is filled with people who represent the new left counter culture?

  • @SpassMacher2000

Not everyone at a Grateful Dead concert in the early 70s was in to hard core New Left politics, culture.

I went to lots of Grateful Dead shows in the late 70s, 80s and I was never in to Leftist politics at all - it was just great music, great live music, audience and band coming together.

The G.D. played lots of cowboy congs - El Paso, Me and My Uncle, working man songs. I like this Okie From Muskogee - let's regular folks know the G.D. and Beach Boys are Left Coast Snobs.

  • @itsareligionofpeace or they were singing it ironically, that's what i would do

  • @guitarpick678

No, I don't think it was ironic - the Beach Boys really loved the folks in Miskogee Oklahoma USA

  • @itsareligionofpeace It is ironic, and its not a beach boys song. Merele Haggard, the song writer, has admitted as much

  • @itsareligionofpeace You are projecting your personal views unto the Beach boys, yes like any other grouping of people they had various interests. But they are generally left leaning yes I know some are republicans, heck john perry barlow who wrote many of the grateful dead songs not written by Robert hunter and he is a Right wing political advocate.

  • @SpassMacher2000 This song is sarcastic. Merle Haggard has always been a pothead. A lot of right-wing people loved this song, completely oblivious to the fact that it was kindof a "screw you" to them.

  • @SpassMacher2000 The song is ironic.

  • google deadpod...this is the feature show this week.

  • This show is featured this week on the Deadpod...use google

  • Look at all the people with 420 in their user name commenting on this song ... bunch of pot heads

  • Awesome!

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Nice one. Thanks for sharing.

  • Favorited! Does anybody have the rest of the songs?

  • o the irony

  • I remember this show! The New Riders came home from that tour, ran back in to the studio and added "Oo wah oos" to Portland Woman (when the album was already pretty much finised). And Merle is and was far hipper than his public persona, FYI (my late husband used to fish with him).

  • The Boy's & Dead & Merle three California classics. Love it-Thanks!

  • Jerry nails the guitar parts.

  • @glyn420 Ya- he kills it.......

  • Check out the Bill Maher interviewwith merle haggard, shit I love hicks and hippies this is fucking america and were all americans and everyone needs to chill out and have respect everyone else. In my homestate vermont everone smokes weed, liberals, conservatives were all the same

  • get a job asshole!

  • @Hashjihadful shut up hippy

  • @StashTheGumbo87 funny this hippy would woop your ass!

  • @donpoontheman was i talking to you? mind your own business hippy before i teach you the lesson in respect that your parents obviously couldn't

  • @StashTheGumbo87 hahahahahahahaha you tell him boss, you tell him.

  • @Hashjihadful right on, man

  • @Hashjihadful I understand your feelings - and in Vermont it is possible for Liberals, Conservatives and most everyone to smoke a little weed and get along.

But that's because Vermont is ~ 95% White.

When you live in cities, states with huge a Black underclass, Latino Gang bangers, Muslim extremist immigrants and extremely intolerant PC DIVERSITY elites who will persecute you for thought crime, it just doesn't work.

This song is for common American White folks.

  • @lastpaganemperor very racist remarks.

  • This is one of the best performances on youtube.

  • Love this song.

The politics are fine - regular folks uncomfortable by all the hostile changes taking place in their country.

The Grateful Dead and the Beach Boys were the best of American music of a certain time and a place...

And when all was said and done, they liked regular folks from Muskogee OK.

    God bless all

  • is mike love singing?

  • Sure is!

  • merle haggard has toured with dylan and the stones recently.

  • Saw Merle & Bob-Great show!

  • yes, i have heard good things about his shows with bob. thanks for the reply.

  • Chill out brother:

    * It's the Dead and the Beach Boys!

    * It's an anti-hippie song, sung by hippies!

    * It's an anti-hippie song written by Merle Haggard, a hippie cowboy who was rolling a joint on his tour bus while rolling through Oklahoma!

Ain't no "bad country stuff", no way!

  • Haggard once said of the song "Muskogee was just about the only place we didn't smoke it."

  • do some research. merle wrote that song from the point of view of an uneducated person from his father's generation seeing all the changes transpiring in the late 60's. the dead, the byrds, john fogerty all played and covered merle songs. this is not the only merle song your beloved dead did in concert. merle has said Muskogee was the only place he didn't smoke pot.

  • I love this song.

And think it is OK if some regular folks in Muskogee OK smote a little MJ. Not too much, or too strong.

Let's work with some of these long hair folks that can't go along with corporate world, no reason to embrace Mao, Trotsky or Osama Bin Ladin - we have folk populists like Mearle Haggard and Mike Love of the Beach Boys - Grateful Dead are mostly OK -

God bless America and Muskogee OK

  • @itsareligionofpeace You are talking about the town where I live

  • @itsareligionofpeace yes, I agree a little MJ is like some moderate beer drinking or a glass of wine with a nice meal.

But hard drugs, meth, crack cocaine, Mexican Black heroin, this must not be tolerated, the same with all the violent corruptions of the 60s that Merle is lamenting here.

  • @itsareligionofpeace No. Why bastardize ideals by smoking peace pipes with rednecked fascists? Especially those who think "left" equals Osama bin Laden. Clearly, the religious fundamentalist that OBL was, he more closely resembled America's righjtwing fascists than he resembled our Democrats.

  • Very odd as that's what Mike proberly lived by. But amzing how the two STILL sound perfect! Nice guitar lick!

  • grate song my mom was born that year and i was born 23 years and one day later =] love the grateful dead

    peace n love

    zack

  • The Beach Boys has made the whole song by

    selfaaaaaaaaaaaa?.

  • Too bad The Beach Boys didn't seem to have any interest in open their vaults, the concert with The Grateful Dead is a great example how good these guys were....
