Not really actually. You've got to remember that only 30% of players in the Premier League are English. MLS has a lot of domestic talent. We don't have Becks, but we have Landon Donovan, Freddy Adu, and lot of other great players. A USA-England game would be a lot closer, and therefore a lot more interesting.

I have thought this for quite some time but I have not seen too much mls recently...the last games I watched were liverpool and man u (I think) a few wednesdays ago and the opening mls game. Other than that, it has been highlights here on youtube and parts of replays of games.

What are you talking about! All the major leagues in Europe have been going on for over 100 years. Teams like Man Utd and Real Madrid have HISTORY, somehting no MLS team will ever have
MLS started in 1996, so of course they don't have the history like the european teams, but as long as MLS stays a float it will make its own history and rivalry. The previous league, the NASL (North American Soccer League) started I think around 1967 and folded in 1984. It was started due to inspiration when England won the WC back in 66. Now MLS is much more stable with new stadiums being built and with a salary cap to control expenses which the old NASL didn't do and went bankrupt.
Arsenal is right,there is no way MLS will ever compete because of the lack of history and the public just don't love the game in US. It's great that Becks has got us interested in a non-Euro league though. Exciting to watch but defending is awful, especially the keepers!
Of course not, tell us something that MLS fans don't already know. MLS has a salary cap of 2.1M in 08 or a tad bit higher. Nevertheless, I'm not even sure if any Chelsea player average salary is below the MLS team salary cap. You need to understand here, football or soccer to us is not the #1 sport in America, it's the 5th based on attendance and that's not even counting college match attendances in the first four sports on top of it, it could well be 7th or 9th.

Respect. We all know MLS isn't the best, but its all we have here. We could all easily sit on the couch and watch EPL games on cable but we can actually go to a live game as long as MLS exist and the quality is good enough or even just passable. There are enough football fans here to fill all MLS stadiums but they're not all MLS fans, many are those who chose to follow foreign teams on cable instead of supporting their own league in their own country, not to support the growth of the sport here.
Hopefully the part-time supporters will take their kids to watch games + they become proper fans in the long-term....MLS is moving forward that's the main thing. Why are Galaxy letting in so many goals? is it the defence, midfield, keeper or the formation/tactics? (or xavier falling over all the time)
If you base your whole team on Beckham and Donovan, the latter taking I think 900K, that leaves you with 1M for the rest of the team on salaries. Their top striker is Ruiz who is injured takes 300-400K. That leaves 700-800k for the rest of the 18 senior roster. Basically the rest of the team are a bunch of nobodies. Xavier is old. They have a couple promising rookies and that's about it. Gullit has a lot of work to do. Til that's fix Galaxy needs to score 3 a game for a chance to win. No depth.
Well virtue you are right in theory but wrong on numbers. Beckham is the only Designated Player..and as such only the first $400k of his salary counts against the cap. Ruiz and Donovan both make $900k but their salaries are grandfathered in at only $400k towards the cap. They are basically DP's. Now, that only leaves just over $900k for the rest of the team but still worth pointing out. Perhaps the most interesting is that 1 of the young starters is only making $12k and another is making $24k.
The point is that MLS HAS TO RAISE THE SALARY CAP if there is ever going to be a club that can field a complete team of above-average players. Right now that is simply not a reality and that is why you see some defenders that are lacking (as the teams spend most of their money/cap on offense). I am hoping that now that the league has some television contracts and is finally making a profit, that they will raise the cap when the players union contract renewal comes up and we can get more quality!

why is the all the weight of the national team on Donovan's shoulders? why are you giving a pass to Beasley (one assist, but other than that not great), McBride, Johnson, who all play in Europe? sure he didn't play his best, but no one really did in 2006.
I think Donovan's gotten better since then. He's been much more aggressive, and he's shaping up to having a great year.

It's been awhile, but I think he took some free kicks and corners. I never said they were great either, though McBride has proved to be a top player for Fulham. you keep saying Donovan couldn't cut it, when it's evident that he could, he just didn't like it. you can hate the guy for not liking it if you want, since others may see him as wasting his talent in the MLS. but how will the league ever get serious if all the good players just leave?

the mls needs to broadcast soccer games on tv regularly thats how u get the kids to play soccer...they need to improve on getting good players either from here or internationally...in order to get the mls to the next level they need to keep the good players..donovan is a great mls player no doubt hopefully he stays

Hmm, you know, considering the Galaxy held their own and almost beat Pachuca, the 2007 Clausura champs, in last year's Superliga...I will have to disagree with that, especially due to the fact that they are doing better now than they have in recent years.

This SuperClassico game was freaking awesome! One of the best galaxy games i have attended to. I'm glad we kicked those goats back to their stables! Hopefully the Galaxy keeps on playing like this and for those people comparing European Leagues to MLS...Come on give us a break, our league is still in its teen years...The MLS only began after the world cup was held in the U.S. back in 1994.

yeah, donovan is a california kid. he couldnt stand germany. in interviews, he said he hated the weather, missed living on the beach, missed his girl and missed his favorite foods (specifically in-n-out burger).
he was only 22 when he left germany (just turned 26 last month) - signed with bayer leverkusen when he was 17. he is married to a hot hollywood actress. who would be in germany when they can be in los angeles? have you seen his wife? would you be in germany if you were married to that?

Yeah, if he was playing in Europe, I bet he'd be an even better player, but that's not what he wanted to do. Some people hate him for that. I don't, since it's his life. So there you have it.

Are we finished with the UK v US debate? I have season tix. As of the 2nd half of the Houston game (the week before) there has been a big change in the Galaxy. They are more attacking now which is what we needed. This is still a baby league so lets quit with the 'my father can beat up your father' routine. We all love the same sport.

What are you talking about! All the major leagues in Europe have been going on for over 100 years. Teams like Man Utd and Real Madrid have HISTORY, somehting no MLS team will ever have

MLS started in 1996, so of course they don't have the history like the european teams, but as long as MLS stays a float it will make its own history and rivalry. The previous league, the NASL (North American Soccer League) started I think around 1967 and folded in 1984. It was started due to inspiration when England won the WC back in 66. Now MLS is much more stable with new stadiums being built and with a salary cap to control expenses which the old NASL didn't do and went bankrupt.

Arsenal is right,there is no way MLS will ever compete because of the lack of history and the public just don't love the game in US. It's great that Becks has got us interested in a non-Euro league though. Exciting to watch but defending is awful, especially the keepers!

Of course not, tell us something that MLS fans don't already know. MLS has a salary cap of 2.1M in 08 or a tad bit higher. Nevertheless, I'm not even sure if any Chelsea player average salary is below the MLS team salary cap. You need to understand here, football or soccer to us is not the #1 sport in America, it's the 5th based on attendance and that's not even counting college match attendances in the first four sports on top of it, it could well be 7th or 9th.

lot of interest in MLS in Europe & Asia cos of Becks, hopefully whole of MLS will get a big growth in revenue from that, especially if get few more big names - even if they are past their best. The MLS needs Galaxy to be successful - Let's hope Gullit sorts defence out. u need big euro satelite tv companies to start showing the games. Got to admit Donovan can finish

Respect. We all know MLS isn't the best, but its all we have here. We could all easily sit on the couch and watch EPL games on cable but we can actually go to a live game as long as MLS exist and the quality is good enough or even just passable. There are enough football fans here to fill all MLS stadiums but they're not all MLS fans, many are those who chose to follow foreign teams on cable instead of supporting their own league in their own country, not to support the growth of the sport here.

Hopefully the part-time supporters will take their kids to watch games + they become proper fans in the long-term....MLS is moving forward that's the main thing. Why are Galaxy letting in so many goals? is it the defence, midfield, keeper or the formation/tactics? (or xavier falling over all the time)

If you base your whole team on Beckham and Donovan, the latter taking I think 900K, that leaves you with 1M for the rest of the team on salaries. Their top striker is Ruiz who is injured takes 300-400K. That leaves 700-800k for the rest of the 18 senior roster. Basically the rest of the team are a bunch of nobodies. Xavier is old. They have a couple promising rookies and that's about it. Gullit has a lot of work to do. Til that's fix Galaxy needs to score 3 a game for a chance to win. No depth.

Well virtue you are right in theory but wrong on numbers. Beckham is the only Designated Player..and as such only the first $400k of his salary counts against the cap. Ruiz and Donovan both make $900k but their salaries are grandfathered in at only $400k towards the cap. They are basically DP's. Now, that only leaves just over $900k for the rest of the team but still worth pointing out. Perhaps the most interesting is that 1 of the young starters is only making $12k and another is making $24k.

The point is that MLS HAS TO RAISE THE SALARY CAP if there is ever going to be a club that can field a complete team of above-average players. Right now that is simply not a reality and that is why you see some defenders that are lacking (as the teams spend most of their money/cap on offense). I am hoping that now that the league has some television contracts and is finally making a profit, that they will raise the cap when the players union contract renewal comes up and we can get more quality!
