The entire Callas vs Tebaldi was ridiculous. Both Ladies were first class Prima Donna's and as different as plums from peaches! They both sang Aida, the Trovatore and Forza Leonora's, Traviata, Butterfly, Tosca, Maddalena in Chenier, but the musical approach and dramatic interpretation was as different as their temperaments. Each was gifted and posessed a genius of her very own. Perfect vocal control warm , passionate her sound is so unique I loved her I first heard her La Boheme. At Carnegie hall 1957 I sat on the stage and watched this great artist stun the audience.Toscanini was right "The voice of an angel."
@ColignyForever . All these armchair critics have probably never seen her perform live and sit behind their keyboards typing out a load of drivvle. I doubt that they would not know a B flat from and A sharp. She was an incredible soprano and had great voice control and could project her voice to the people sitting in ther back rows of the Audience. I wouldnt stress too much about these idiots on the YouTube forum they know less then 95% about good opera.
Granted everyone has their preferences, but I just love listening to the sheer power and talent of these ladies. I am always astounded by the fact this can come out of a human being.
If someone makes a statement that Tebaldi isn' "that great" the least he/she could do is to explain further and illustrate us about such a statement, Not that great, as compared to what or whom? I am also confused about the "sad:))))" comment. Does he/she feel sad for us, Tebaldi's fans, because he/she believes we are not intelligent enough to realize she is not "that great"?
I think this was real, it's hard to believe that someone could synthesize this melody and turn it into her own after all the countless renditions. Today with the amount of performers who mimic some of the great divas what a wonderful gift. I'd like to go visit the Museum dedicated to her and her voice.
What is all of this talk of Maria Callas. Callas was never in the league of Tebaldi. One only has to have ears to hear the difference. Tebaldi's singing is sublime. Callas on the other hand blew her voice out by singing roles she should have stayed away from. Callas also lowered the standards for singers today. Callas made bad singing accepatble, and thus the current sad state of the arts.
@Neanderthalgirl Callas made remarks appreciative of Tebaldi, and vice versa. Callas said, "I admire Tebaldi's tone; it's beautiful—also some beautiful phrasing. Sometimes, I actually wish I had her voice." Tebaldi was once given a recording for a role shewas to play. Aware of the alleged rivalry, he recommended another version. Days later, he went to visit Tebaldi, to find her sitting by the speakers, listening to Callas' recording. She then asked, "Why didn't you tell me Maria's was the best"
@Neanderthalgirl Have you ever heard Callas' album of Puccini heroines? Great singing as well as characterization in my view. In one Puccini role, in particular, I believe she is supreme, namely Tosca. Have you heard the recording mentioned by paulostroff99 and what she does with the text? If not, it is well worth listening to.
I wholeheartedly agree... especially regarding Callas in the 1953 recording of Tosca with DiStefano , De Sabata conducting. ALL this aside, Tebaldi was a great artist in her own right, and this is certainly a fine performance!
@paulostroff99 I agree that Callas is a magnificent Tosca, and that first recording she made with di Stefano and Gobbi is the best performance of the opera I ever hope to hear. For Madama Butterfly, Callas has some rivals, including Tebaldi, de los Angeles, and Moffo. For Turandot, there is Nilsson. However, while Tebaldi, Milanov, and Crespin are also great as Tosca, Callas is the greatest!
She is superb in this performance! This performance brings tears to my eyes, look at her pose. A beautiful, talented, self-assured Diva. I love her beautiful, beautiful voice. She was one of the most talented Spintos to grace our world with her voice.
Ok...a wonderfull voice... but that's it! And she doesn't have the high register so good as one would like... nevertheless, a wonderfull voice indeed...

I think that Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi both had amazing voices. I have been taking my first singing lesson for a few months now, and my teacher told me to listen to Tibaldi. I did happen to see Callas perform the week before. They are both good to study. They both have AMAZING voices, it really just depends on what kind of voice you like, because they both sound very different.
I commented earlier, negatively, on Tebaldi's Jewel Song from Faust here on Youtube (lack of trill, etc). But in this Un bel di she is certainly in her natural territory.
I've seen her past her prime, but with all her allure, at Espace Pierre Cardin in Paris in the late '70s. She was intelligent, fabulous and still the great star. She sang new stuff only because, she said, if you want to hear what I sounded like before, buy my records....
Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too. Have you heard a great performance by this singer live, without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add the wonderful YouTube archive before the memory is lost for ever.
How I wish I could have been there to hear Farinelli entrance an audience with the power of a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.
A dear friend introduced me to this song recently and since hearing it for the first time it has become an addiction..... Renata sings it with such passion.... I sit mesmerised and watch and listen over and over again.... truly a graceful lady and such a heart wrenching song..... thank you
Excellent presentation, beautiful woman, magnificent voice! More importantly, she carried herself with such grace and dignity ... a great lady. No wonder people loved her. The voice and temperament of an angel. HAPPY BIRTHDAY RENATA!!! Forever alive in our hearts. Thank-you so much Bendsito!!!
Today is Tebaldi's 4th anniversary of her death. But time will never erase the memory of this great soprano. Truly one of the greatest voices of the 20th century. Love you Renata!
Beautiful singing. Kind of "stiff" in the acting department. (What's with the elbows stuck out all the time?)

I think Tebaldi is a great Butterfly and Mimi. Love Callas but thin in terms of emotional richness Renata always wins. Bit like Domingo v Pavarotti !

You are right.

As far as I know, the highest number of octaves in opera is 11, while Umm Kolthoum reached 13 and Mohammad Al Quppanchi reached 18 :)

Tebaldi, in her prime, singing Puccini, and particularly Madama Butterfly. Could it get much better than this?

Excellent presentation, beautiful woman, magnificent voice! More importantly, she carried herself with such grace and dignity ... a great lady. No wonder people loved her. The voice and temperament of an angel. HAPPY BIRTHDAY RENATA!!! Forever alive in our hearts. Thank-you so much Bendsito!!!

Today is Tebaldi's 4th anniversary of her death. But time will never erase the memory of this great soprano. Truly one of the greatest voices of the 20th century. Love you Renata!
