Instead of the quick-fix solution of "get rid of them, they're costing us money" I think one must look at stopping people from comitting crime in the first place.
Don't complain when the weed grows back if all you've done is cut of the head and left the roots.
Hi, Steph-- I understand your statement and I agree with you. Execution is "the easy way out".
But I believe the point of execution (however wrong it is, and it is wrong) is supposed to be "the only way to ever stop this person from ever committing a crime like this again".
I say for these people in prison that have raped, murdered, tortured and other acts of violence do the same thing that they did to their victims..... Make them suffer the same fate as they did.... Quit spending all this money to keep them in prisons.... There are to many people there now and have been there for years and they should be gone now.. Spend more for schools, children, and more important things than the scums in prisons and jails... Just my thoughts...
i agree death is peace too but until they take out cable tv and 3 squares a day etc and make prison PRISON where an eye for an eye is ur punishment w/o spending 30k+/yr per person - i say take them out bc our tax money is better spent elsewhere like education instead of keeping these freaks alive (altho i kno that money will never be re-allocated towards a social benefit even if we killed them all)
I don't agree with the death penalty. They let them die in prison if they want their punishment to be death. Thou shalt not kill, is not limited to ordinary citizens. A man was just executed last week, they will not release his body to the mans wife, because the forensic science center wants to do an autopsy. You have to ask yourself "why" they know what took his life. She had to go to court Monday for hearing in the matter, and as of now they are arranging a memorial cuz they won't release him
You think execution is a blessing if you are innocent? Also unsure about the instantaneous nature of lethal injection. If the law was utterly infallible (you know, like the pope lol) then torture or death could be unerringly applied. Not the case though is it? So no death penalty OR torture IMO.
I agree with the first 3 but not the fourth. There is a difference between making people accountable and pure revenge through might makes right. When Americans understand this they will have the lower crime rates that Europe enjoys.
The death penalty causes the state to sink to the level of the lowest citizen. It makes a murderer out of the government. It also places the government in a hypocritical position, telling the citizens that killing people is an unacceptable way of resolving problems or conflicts while practising the method itself. Regardless of whether certain individuals deserve to die, I don't believe that the death penalty is beneficial for the state.
Ya know what Steph I've always have felt the same way since I was a young girl. But as I got older and learned that we feed them pay for their medical while they are locked up I've kind of changed my mind but not all the way. I think they should get hard labor if there is such a thing anymore , and when they become a certain age it's lights out...( the same age for all )
In my heart I believe we need to evolve past the death penalty -in an advanced society it is an archaic notion. But are we advanced? Capital punishment does separate the US from other western nations.
It's very difficult however to say how I would feel about it if someone close to me had been tortured, raped and murdered, especially if the bastard had an opportunity to be paroled at some point. In Europe, often murder sentences are 10-20 years. Not enough IMHO.
if someone close to me had been tortured, raped and murdered. I would not want them (murderer) to be given any pleasure from this world.Giving them time to find god and forgive themselves is not punishment.Feeding their mind while being fed 3 times a day, breathing clean air, engaging in conversation is not torture or equal to murder. They get all this on death row.
Your right however I do think that murderers should have a worse prison sentence. Not gyms, three meals education and everything their little hearts desire. I also think they should Never have visitors, I know that hurts their family but it hurts them worse. I think they should be made to work such as crops to donate to the poor. Killing them yeah thats to easy, if your going to kill them make sure they are guilt and let the family and friends have them. Now that would end crime!
the thing of it is, they don't suffer in prison either ... and though i feel that there should be stringent guidelines, i DON'T feel that my hard earned tax dollars should go toward 3 squares, medical care, education & a roof over the head of someone who has no regard for my (or any other human) life.
Steph I've always thought that it's greater punishment to make someone rot away in a hard labor prison for the rest of their days than to give them and early out via execution.
You make a really valid point here! I must admit, you have me reconsidering my views on the dealth penalty now. I was really for it.......eliminate the worst of the worst, but I have also seen our "Justice System" completly destroy innocent people and make them suffer lifelong as well. Perhaps a better prison system and a total clean up of our current Justice System would be a great place to start!!!
I think in some cases it's not about making the criminal suffer--it's about eliminating a monster from society. But I'm kind of on the fence with this issue. I wouldn't want to be a judge or member of a jury that had to decide whether someone lives or dies...
I just can't decide how I feel about the death penalty.
If we Make them suffer, then we're just as low as they are. To keep them alive, we're spending trillions of dollars. Maybe their final fate should be left to the loved ones of the deceased after they've been sentenced to death.
Steph - the death penalty is NOT humane. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that death by lethal injection or electric chair is anything but quick.
A civilised society needs to be able to deal with problems without resorting to violence.
There is no justice in the death penalty it is simply satisfying a desire for revenge.
The death penalty statistics in the US make for interesting reading. Just see how many of them are black or Hispanic males compared with Caucasian. To sum it up - if you're white and accused of a capital crime then with a good lawyer you are likely to get life. If you're black, you're fucked. That's not justice.
Thatgaybloke - you are correct. It is also interesting that countries like the U.S. that have the death penalty have higher crime rates than countries that do not have the death penalty. It is as effective as abstinence only education is for preventing teen pregnancy.
Even the knowledge that they will never get out and experience freedom again is a form of torture, but I'm okay with that if the evidence is solid. But until there is absolute certainty that they are in fact guilty, I'd still keep the option for release open. The death penalty is never right. It's barbaric, expensive and wrong. In my opinion of course.
Making a person suffer isn't so much a punishment as it is revenge or vengeance. I'd like to think that, as a society, we are above that. I agree that killing them isn't helping anyone. I'd prefer to keep them locked up for life, with very few privileges, which would effectively remove any meaningful existence.
Wrong on this, we need to execute and do more of it and faster. This country is to easy on hardcore crime. Make it known that you will die and it will happen soon.
It's about punishment and making a point to others that cross that line. If it came to a point that we could determine a criminal at birth then we would have the ability to change that flaw.
It's just a label to describe anti abortion to me. I think this country is to easy on rapist murderers. Sex offenders let out to do it again. Make the consequences brutal.
i wholeheartedly agree steph. serving life in prison would be much worse than dying in my opinion, plus is gives the offender and opportunity to think about what they've done
Yep...suffering is a punishment! But I don't think the "suffering" or the threat of the death penalty will stop violent crimes from happening...*sigh*
the point is they are trash and socity is better off without them!!!!

This has been flagged as spam show
Carlos Deluna: Tied to the crime scene by physical evidence and witnesses, plead guilty to another murder
Gary Graham: Plead guilty to other robberies in which he shot, kidnapped or raped victims. Identified by witnesses as the shooter in the murder case.
Josepg Odell: Physical evidence tied him to the crime and he'd already served time for robbery, murder and attempted rape.
Innocent my a--!
Oh, and WIllingham's last words were not about innocence. He called his ex wife a bitch.

i agree with this strange looking old man...
make them suffer...
the death penality is way to soft...
we have it here for a reason and it needs to be public, killing them with only 13 witneses is a joke!!!!
it is supposed to be a deture peole from crime, make it a community event done by the community that was effected by the persons actions...
ohh yea and with the whole death penalty being racist and against the poor, grow up hippy!

Prisons have 4 purposes
!. protect society by keeping the bad guys away
2. crime prevention
3. rehabilitating criminals
4. revenge
