@bertmarx Yeah Floyd beat Castillo twice (although many people think Castillo won their 1st fight) but Castillo was not considered to be the equivalent of Julio Caesar Chavez at the time they fought. Castillo had been stopped at least twice and was not considered top 10 pound-for-pound when Floyd fought him. Chavez, however, was considered at least top 3 p4p and was undefeated in like 80 fights or so when Pernell fought him. Many people thought Pernell was in over his head.
Pernell fighting Chavez back then is the equivalent of Floyd fighting Pacquiao in this era. Pernell was willing to prove that he could beat the best of his time and one of the greatest of all time. Thus far, Floyd is unwilling to do the same. Sure, Castillo was a very good fighter - and even got better after he fought Floyd - but trying to substitute Castillo for Chavez (or Pacquiao) is absurd.

Since moving to 147 his priorities have changed that is true, but the guy was perfectly willing to fight all comers in his prime weights.

No, he didn't knock him out. And the reason why he didn't knock him out is because Whitaker wasn't a puncher (which was proved when they fought considering Roger had one of the worst chins ever). How was Pep better than Floyd and everyone else at defense? Name me one other person besides Pep who won an entire round without throwing a single punch. You can't. Not only that, but Pep called the round he would win. He kept the newspaper clipping of that fight in his coat pocket until he died.

@bertmarx Yeah Floyd beat Castillo twice (although many people think Castillo won their 1st fight) but Castillo was not considered to be the equivalent of Julio Caesar Chavez at the time they fought. Castillo had been stopped at least twice and was not considered top 10 pound-for-pound when Floyd fought him. Chavez, however, was considered at least top 3 p4p and was undefeated in like 80 fights or so when Pernell fought him. Many people thought Pernell was in over his head.

Pernell fighting Chavez back then is the equivalent of Floyd fighting Pacquiao in this era. Pernell was willing to prove that he could beat the best of his time and one of the greatest of all time. Thus far, Floyd is unwilling to do the same. Sure, Castillo was a very good fighter - and even got better after he fought Floyd - but trying to substitute Castillo for Chavez (or Pacquiao) is absurd.

@seerauberjohnny Eh Floyd would have fought JCC. JCC was the kind of opponent Floyd fought before he moved up to 147. He would have taken the JCC fight in a heart beat at 140 or below. Since moving to 147 his priorities have changed that is true, but the guy was perfectly willing to fight all comers in his prime weights.

we can't compare pernell vs floyd defense because they have a different resumes. floyd defense only looks good as the fighter he is against with which is not the same level as pernell's opponent -- from mayweather early in his career to chavez to azumah nelson. this is a no brainer comparison.
