Hi, i think you should play Ab maj7 (not Ab) and Gm7 (notG) on verses and Ab maj7 (not Ab/Eb) on chorus, maybe this score have some mistakes but you have a nice voice
Mike you have been truly a great master class with your very practical and easy thank you in half an hour I learned "logical song" I'll see my videos thanks to Simon from Naples
Thank you very much for posting this piano lesson. I've been trying to tech myself how to play and this will be a huge help. I stumbled upon it on accident, and am so glad that I did.
Hey mike!!!congratulations...I watch your videos every days, and everydays I learn a new song!!! I comeback to play piano thanks to yours pretty good lessons!!;-)
I'm italian boy and sorry for my poor english...i hope that you understand me!
Really great, congratulations for sing during the song (believe in my pianist experience, it's hard). I have the scores if someone wants. Ask me by mail at leclecle@free.fr
Hello, just wanted to say I got a decent Yamaha keyboard and am currently learning to play. Been playing guitar 6 years but not too familiar with piano/keyboard. This helped me get a grasp on this song pretty well after practicing it awhile. Thanks!
Well this isn't the way I play it. There's a bunch of 7ths and 9ths thrown in there that's missing in this video.
But it doesn't really matter, it still sounds great with these chords. And this is perfect for beginners or people who just want to jam out and not worry that every silly note is 100% in it's place...
.... People complaining obviously are missing the lyrics of the song! It's all about NOT over analyzing, and I think that applies to the chord progression of this video as well!
I think the idea of teaching such a beautiful song is good, and you are a good teacher for beginners. But there are a lot of important mistakes in the chords. Mike, it would be nice for them if you re-record this with the appropriate corrections.
Hey mike, I love your vids for tutorials :D I've learned Bohemian Rhapsody from it to, and somebody to love. But I saw that Am7b5 the same is as Cm9, and it's easier for the first time to see Cm9 instead of Am7b5, when I saw this chord I thought: WOOW but when I play it's just too easy xD
can we all just quit complaining about the exact chord is in the original recording?!?!?! does one semitone really matter? and he's teaching it from a book. if you have something to say then call up the company who published it and stop criticizing an amazing piano teacher IMHO. im 15 and have only just started playing piano. ive only had my keyboard for about 10 days and can play hey jude and the logical song with the singing because of his videos. i'd just like to personally say thank you:)
@RedPanaccione then you'll eventually learn that one semitone REALLY MATTERS, and really matters A LOT, in this case that one semitone changes a chord that's supposed to be minor to major, so yes, it makes the whole difference between right and wrong. The only intention of my comment was to help people learn this song right.
@sergiomng im sorry i shouldnt have went off like that. i realize your point and fully understand where youre coming from. and i know a little about music theory, well alot compared to many of my friends (who have had formal lessons) and understand about major and minor chords from my time playing guitar. my comment wasnt directed at you or anyone in particular. its the fact that people are criticizing his playing when they most likely learned from books that have almost the same chords
2 chords are wrong. The 2nd one, is not Ab major, like you're doing it. It's Ab major with a 7th major. Actually, only the bass changes, i mean, only your left hand moves from C to Ab, you should be playing G C Eb G with your right one. The third chord is not G major, is G minor with a 7th minor, (G Bb D F). There's some mistakes at the final part too. I'll explain later. Good effort, it's a great song.
@riccardodimilano Hello, you are a little right, the third chord is not G, it is exactly this one: (from the left of the keyboard to the right G, Ab, D, F) it's called in French G mineur diminué, that means G minor decreased :)
And I have played along to a few live Supertramp clips of this song, and they play it starting on a B minor - not a C minor, so I had to transpose all the chord progressions down. The cool thing is I can play it in either key now.
I see you have bass in your name, I jusst made a vid called Captain D are you on shore riders on the storm. the reason i mention it is I go thru the bassline in that tune,If i played bass i would make my band play that one!
I have just bought a new keyboard for my birthday, and discovered your tutorials at the same time. They are great!! Thank you very much - you are inspiring me to practice hard. I have been learning Wild Horses and now I am having a go at The Logical Song - Supertramp are my favourite band of all time, so great to be able top try and play some. Tricky chords, but I am getting there. Any chance of Goodbye Stranger.
Mike, This is a really great tutorial. Thanks so much... I learned it so quickly thanks to you. I have a couple comments: 1) In the verse, it sounds more like a Gm to me than a G. and 2) during the rundown in the chorus it looks like you are not showing the Bbm correctly. It should be F Bb Db.
I could be totally off on these... just my amateur opinion.
Yeah I think your right, I have had several personal comments on the matter. some say Gm some say Gm7 . You know I was just fooling around with a G7, sounds kind of weird out of context but play it along with Roger and see what you think,
"THE QUESTION TO RUN DEEP" is Ab7 + chord

According the original song, the chord is Gm7. The sequence would be Cm Ab Gm7 Bb Ab Adim.

Yes there are several great ways to play this classic, this version is from the PVG book in the video.
I have seen sheets with Gm7 as the third chord, either way enjoy the song!

@MikesMusic123 definitively G its incorrect, you have to play Gm7

@MikesMusic123 If I may suggest; on the recording it sounds like on the verse it goes Cm Cm/Ab (or Ab7) Bb/G (or Gm7) Bb Ab Adim

That chromatic thing in the bass, I've never seen Hodgson actually play that, he just plays C G B-flat at the open.
Yeah the G-chord is actually Gmin-7, as in G B-flat, D, F.

ciao mike, your tutorials are really useful. just a question about the chord progression of "logical song".
are you sure that the third chord is Gmaj? in my opinion (expecially playing the song over the original song) it seems Gminor. Cm-Ab-Gm-Bb.
riccardodimilano 1 year ago
Yeap Gm, it was G in the music sheet i have but your right , it s not quite there.

G is the 3rd degree in this scale, and therefore it makes a MINOR CHORD
