  • these are awesome dude, allot of golden memories ...

Keep up the good work, you got an extra subscriber. :)

  • Maybe it's because I'm a casual adventure gamer, but i think The Dig did everything right, especially the fascinating story and atmosphere.

  • i was disappointed by the lack of characters in this game

  • With all due respect Matt, the graphics were pretty phenomenal for their time. The rendered animations of the asteroid and the animation were truly amazing. Ran very slow on my 486 though.

  • Man you rock and just so right about this. I'm really crazy about The Dig, I love the game and it really captured my interest as soon as I first saw it on a friend of mine. I got to play it years later and I loved it to the end.

I got the novel a few days ago and if you're a really big fan it is an interesting read with a lot of details and backstory not seen in the game!

  • The Dig is one of my absolute favourites. It really has a unique feel to it, and as you say the excellent music is an important part of it. For me, it's the sense of extreme isolation and loneliness that stick out. Stranded in an alien place, the other people in your team are either crazy or really determined not to keep you company. And most importantly, the world is eerily silent. Dead.

There's a sense of loss and grief over this game that I really appreciate.

  • Great review, I've not heard of this particular Lucas game. I'll have to check it out. :)

  • Wow, never heard of this one. Interesting story, good voice acting...I'm impressed! They should make a movie out of this.

  • A little spoilerish in this review Matt.

I love this game, one of my favorite adventure games ever, so different from the rest.

I don't remember much from it but I love the Michael Land soundtrack, I listen to it often and it's one of my all time greatest soundtracks.

  • @Konuvis Yes, it's difficult to do an adventure game precisely for this reason. I guess I should put a warning at the start of them to play the game before watching it. :)

  • @blacklily8 Well especially for this one which is a very plot intensive game. If you did the same thing on Day of the Tentacle it would be fine.

  • This is such a great game! In my mind this is the high point in the adventure game genre. I've played it several times. The story is so good that and it doesn't matter that you know exactly how to finish it, it's still a very rewarding experience to play it.

  • Just checking to express my gratitude to you for making these videos, very interesting, entertaining and nostalgic!

Try to do LBA2 (Little Big Adventure 2) sometime in the future, have some really fond memories of that game from my childhood. =)

  • Good one Matt. Hopefully they put this sucker up on Xbox live for download.

  • Hey, just discovered your channel. Wow, your videos are really thought provoking, not like the mindless "reviews" on crap sites like IGN. You rock!

  • I never actually got to finish this game. I got up to that part where Brink had just gone crazy and was working on some machine. Magi was studying the library but hadn't discovery anything and I was now wondering around on my own. I must have spent a week wondering around trying to figure out what to do. Rubbing random things against one-and-other, you know, as you do in adventure games.

  • lol 7:58

  • I know this game was only available on the PC CD-Rom but It looks like a great adventure role playing game that would of done well also if it was ported to the SEGA Mega CD console considering most of those games used FMV visuals for graphics.

  • Never played it, but looks great! I'll try it, love LucasArts games!

  • I never played this game Matt but the scene at 5:30 in your video is kind of Reminiscent of a part in a movie called "The Keep" where 2 German soldiers remove a stone whereupon one of them crawls through a hole like tunnel and discovers a large sparse area almost abyss like.

Do a YouTube search for -: "The Keep Nazi Stealing cross scene"

BTW - Its also a fantastic movie with incredible music from Tangerine Dream :)

  • @blade004 I haven't seen The Keep, but am a huge Tangerine Dream fan and have listened to all of their albums (and there's like 100!) many times. I wonder if the movie is on Netflix.

  • @blacklily8 The Keep is fantastic movie!, but unfortunately is not available on DVD :( Its one of those rare gems that hardly anyone knows about and just as Vangelis sets the Incredible mood Blade Runner with his musical scores, so does Tangerine Dream in The Keep ;) I have heard the music for the movie can be found though and for some absolutely silly reason i have not tried to acquire it! .. I know, i know, i am an idiot!! ;) Tangerine Dream as you know are utterly brilliant.

  • I had no idea this game was so underated. I played it in my childhood and loved every bit of it.

That's what some hype can do to a game, it can't live the espectations even if it is really a good game, some people can't see it as what it really is.

Anyway, great Matt Chat and I'm glad you chose this game. I'll spread Matt Chat as much as I can, your show is great and it inspired me and my friend to do our own little show for the Brazilian audience.

Waiting for the green screen :)

  • @dcviana Me, too!!! I can't wait to try it out. I have some really fun ideas for that green screen.

  • This game looks great. I need to try it out.

  • I loved The Dig and enjoyed every aspect of it except for one puzzle. The one where you have to put a turtles skeletons back in the right order, that took me forever to do.

  • The music and the feeling when you play this game is so awesomme. I play this game every two years or so. I only play it late at night - when the game is most effective, because i feel isolated which is the perfect state of mind for this most excellent game.

  • @inei9j43710hd83k34 Yes, I remember some of these games would recommend that you play them in the dark with headphones on instead of speakers. That would really add to it, I think!

  • For some reason I never liked this game. And there aren't many classic adventure games that I don't like.

  • This game looks so engaging, I can't wait to play it. Thanks again Matt, for your hard work. I always look forward to your video's!

  • great voice acting by robert patrick.. sweet.

  • Ματτ you are GREAT ! ! ! ! ! * * * * *

  • Agree Matt - this, to me, is the best LucasArts adventure, it's like a Saturday Morning Animation crossed with a $100 million blockbuster movie!

I think what we saw with this game was the very first signs of the dumbing down of the gaming market and, indeed, society. It seems too much of a coincidence that practically every serious/mature/subtle storied game has not sold because of this. Looking Glass always struggled because this was the only type of game they knew how to make, for example!

  • @HardWarUK Yes, I struggle with the dumbing down issue. I don't believe that gamers are dumb, but I know most marketing types seem to think so. They only hype the dumb games, making out like only nerds or geeks would want anything more intellectual. I don't see why we can't have lots of action AND intelligent stories and characters.

  • hey matt, you should do a matt chatt on populous! I mean, its a great, classical game.

  • Absolutely stunning point & click adventure in every term.. Easily on TOP 5 ;) and one of my favorites :) Loved the P&C era on PC.. I've played so many adventures games back in the days, so many hours... ahhhh

  • The Dig has an awesome story and some suberb voice acting! Bit of trivia: Low's voice is provided by Robert Patrick the t1000 from terminator 2. Great review Matt! I love your choices you talk about games others dont touch upon. How cool would it have been if games back then came with the special editions they do now. Wouldn't mind a life crystal replica! ^^

  • The Dig was more than an adventure game. It was more like a big budget sci fi movie than an adventure game.

I agree that the dig was easier than most adventure games.... but so what? i dont have to time to use 50+ hours on some game which will bring me more frustration than entertainment,

  • @JegHarEnLillePik I couldn't agree more. Indeed, as-is it's a better science fiction movie than many big budget films.

  • Hey Matt. Your videos are always very well made. Great work and thanks heaps!

  • The Dig was partially a scary experience. Could almost feel the massive space. Too bad nowadays epic scifi adventure games are hard to come by so best to stick with the Dig and other classics.

Betcha gonna someday make a Matt Chat about Beneath The Steel Sky.

  • @lewa123456 I'm sure that will happen. I enjoyed that game as well the Broken Sword series.

  • I played this game like 6 months ago and loved it!

  • Great episode i play that game back like 6 years ago and i really enjoyed it thanks for bringing back the memories.

  • I remember being intrigued by this game by a special feature supplement in EDGE magazine back then. Never got to play it but always looked interesting anyway. Thanks for showcasing this dude. :)

  • I've never heard of this game! Love the Vangelis style soundtrack.

  • @marcusmalone Indeed, that's an awesome soundtrack. There is a CD available, but it's an expensive collector's item. You can find the mp3 files pretty easily, though.

  • @blacklily8 Might follow that up. Cheers. Something tells me that Northern European archaeologist is harbouring a sinister HAL-style agenda!

  • @marcusmalone Yes, it's like he's on the Brink of insanity! I love his accent, though. But really, why do all the guys with German accents in Lucas games have to be villains?

  • @blacklily8 Poor old Germany. Forever having to live down that whole Hitler thing! C'mon peeps, that was, like, AGES ago!

  • I tried playing this game but I was turned off by its outdated gameplay. But for some reason, Day of The Tentacle worked a lot better.

  • Great game. Did not played it in the old days but just a few months ago with help of an emulator.

You're right Matt, those who played one or all of the MYST games with their sometimes extremely hard puzzles , know why to value shorter RPGs like The Dig.

It also had a pretty cool soundtrack and some impressing graphical animations for its time. I do not remember E.T being in it though. :-D

  • @Celeon999A Really? He's always falling into those pits there. :P

  • Loved this game, there's too few good scifi adventures games. Except for the turtle puzzle it's all pretty easy.

  • Another great episode Matt, I love the Dig and I agree with you the lenght of a game is better short and fun rather than taking months of leveling up characters which I think is what makes Final Fantasy games boring! Thanks for reviewing it. Some other greats games are Loom and Full Throtle... maybe future reviews haha ;o)

  • Great episode Matt, this looks like my type of game. I'd never heard of it prior to this video, do you think it would be hard to get it running on a Vista laptop?

  • @ianwilson1978 hiya mate. this game will run under scumvm which will playu fine on vista. do a search for it on the net to find out more.

  • @workablebiglips Thanks, I'll take a look. I was thinking about buying the original PC CD ROM but guess that wouldnt work with Vista.

  • Oh, the magic of those crystals! I think Superman might have had a few of those lying around! I agree, who cares how long a game it is as long it is a good game with good character development. These days its all about length first and content second. The commander sounds a little like Charlie Sheen. Don't worry Robbins, I like you! Thanks Matt!

  • The life crystals here made me think of the sarcophagus in Stargate SG-1.

  • Do 'Day of the Tentacle' next. ;)

  • Great review as usual Matt. I recently unearthed and old rubbermaid tub from my childhood and it had a lot of old games in it... old LucasArts games that I hadn't seen since before I was 14. Full Throttle (my personal favorite) and Day of the Tentacle worked in ScummVM perfectly, but I've had trouble getting the voice acting to work in The Dig. I didn't realize it was on Steam, might get it there. Timely that you posted this a few days after I was thinking about replaying it!

    Cheers.

  • Awesome Video man! A very nice review and a very true classic:)

    peace!

  • Awesome looking game, I might have to pick this up on Steam sometime. I will be sure to keep spreading the Word on this show to my fellow G1's on ScrewAttack. :-)

  • Matt you seem like the Bob Ross of video games. You have a very laid back peaceful way about you. Although I've enjoyed all of your videos I like it best when you feature underrated, hidden gems like this. I also like all of the behind the scenes info you give about these games. Not so much a review, but a history lesson. Keep up the awesome job.

  • @starscreem777 The Bob Ross of videogames! Well, that's the first time I've heard that one. ;)

  • Great vid Matt. I've had this game in my Steam library for ages without installing it. I think it will be the next game I play =)

  • I want to play this game pretty bad thanks to you! story looks really interesting.

  • My only gripe with this game (and has been since I picked it up all those years ago) is the title.......The Dig? I know it's a little ludicrous that the name of a game should bother me but it just seems like a lazy title without any real deep thought behind it.

  • @bluetonic78 I was thinking that, too. It kinda works, but it's pretty basic. Seems like the word crystal should be in it.

  • @bluetonic78 The Shovel is the most used item by far. Archeology is what the characters are doing most of the time. They are "digging" for the truth. Maybe not an exciting Sci-Fi title, but I do find it fitting for the pace of the game.

  • @LordeSloth That's a great point. Hadn't thought of it before, but you're right.

  • Ah I looked it up, sure enough it is. I don't normally go for these but as always MATT you make it seem more interesting then I would think at first glance.

  • @MaximumRD Yes, there are even some jokes in the game about the T1000.

  • The one guy sounds a bit like Robert Patrick.........

  • Matt, that was a great episode as usual. Very rarely do I get the "adventure" bug, but this episode did it! Boy, does "The Dig" seem right up my alley. The premise/plot of the game seems very intriguing, more so than most (all?) adventure games I've seen. This looks to be more like an interactive movie than a traditional adventure.

You're killing me, though, with all these great games you showcase in each episode. Just when I'm getting somewhere in "Deus Ex," you bring along another cool game!

  • I honestly cannot remember hearing about this game before. I'll definitely have to check it out, though. Brink is quite a character.

  • Well this will be the first Matt Chat I don't watch on its release! Haven't yet played the game but it's high on my list of "most-wanted-to-play"... thank you though, for reminding me I need to get to it!

  • Great Matt Chat, Matt! I completely agree with you, this is such an amazing game, I love the story and the characters and their interactions a lot. I never got why it was so much underrated. It's one of the few games that really manages to move me, and the choice at the end is pretty cool and you can feel how tough that would be.

At one point I wanted to really make a radio adaptation from this story, never went through with it though. Still think this story would make an excellent radio piece.

  • @HalfBlindGamer A radio adaptation? Tell me more!

  • @blacklily8 Well, I've always really enjoyed radio plays. I find that those are often faster paced, can have better character development and leave something for your own imagination to fill, compared to movies. A long while ago I really wanted to make some new radio plays, since unfortunatly they are a dying breed.

For my first project I had this game in mind. I wanted to use the original script, with the Japanese buisneesguy I think? I somehow manage to get it and started to turn it into....

  • @HalfBlindGamer a script to use, which was in Dutch too, but never finished it. Couldn't find enough people who were interested in the project and eventually just gave up on the whole thing.

Still think it would make a really good radio play though, because the focus is really on the characters and their interactions.

  • interesting game. I am not a huge fan of games that are pretty much just story and nothing else but it is better then games filled with tedious puzzles.

and personality I like short games.

So I think I will check this out.

  • You are 100% correct - I would prefer a great game that was short than a long boring mediocre game.

There are tons of games with useless fetch quests, level grinding or puzzles that are needlessly obscure. A good point and click game should tell a wonderful story and not worry about length.

I received this game as a gift a few years ago and have never touched it. Your video has made me want to boot it up!

    Cheers

  • A truly awesome game.

  • Ive never played this game ....but after seeing it ... to me its a must play now i cant beleive i missed it.

excellent episode of matt chat too :)

  • Nice screen roll of E.T. LOL

  • Oh good! I do loves me some Matt Chat! :)

  • Steven Spielberg had a lot of involvement in this he originally wanted to make it into a film. The original versions of The Dig also included a 4th character and and one version had a survival element where you had to keep finding food and water which wasn't very LucasArts so they scrapped those ideas. Apparently it was LucasArts least sold adventure title which is a shame cause its a great title that everyone should check out.

  • too focused on the story? no such thing imo. Planescape torment is a perfect example.

  • Thank you so much for doing an episode on this game! I grew up playing The Dig -- this game and the Marathon series are what got me interested in science fiction literature.

  • Matt, in the hope, maybe in vain of you reading this, thanks for putting up these amazing videos!
