  • Um, hold on? What was the definition of "ugly" again? Anne of Cleves is very pretty!

  • @SoKawaii2 I KNOW!!! but remeber king henry was a really mean person so...........

  • I never understood what Hennry thought was SO unattractive about her...

  • i agree with you CityFireflies i would not marry a man and even if is the king because he is spoiled, vengeaful and bloody....

  • Oh Please come on she is not ugly, she is pretty HENRY ASSHOLEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Anne definitely wasn't an ugly woman - Today, she would probably have been considered 'plain', but her manners and decorum made her pretty by the standards of the day. She was a real lady. Henry didn't like her because she had large breasts (yeah) and because he got a bad first impression of her on their first meeting (Like this, it was pretty awkward.) He liked Catherine Howard because she was young and full of life, whereas Anne was very modest.

  • Little Elizabeth is so cute!

  • It's really weird but the music when the daughters are introduced to her are seem reflective of both daughters' futures as queens to me. Or maybe it was their aura at that time.

  • @Acharmye It does, with Mary being doomed, and Elizabeth being uplifting. I like it.

  • @LeahWalentosky Yeah maybe the show set it up. I liked the music around Elizabeth & Edward(also uplifting). Though I hated Mary's was dark, she wasn't the only one to execute. I wish her theme was just a little upbeat.

  • This is wrong, when Anne first met Henry, he grabbed her from behind or something & she called him a 'pervert'. I guess she didn't understand English court life.

  • The portrait of Anne of Cleves sent to Henry before he met her in real life portrayed her as prettier than she was. She was plainer sure but not neccesarily ugly. And he had no feelings for her and she didn't act all coquettish and seductive. He was just very spolied.

  • did you see her smile? such a sweet smile that can melt a man's heart, and henry must be blind to hate her and say she looked like a horse!!

  • "I am not well-handled, Mr. Cromwell." Those words are historically true; Hnry really did say that. Cool. =)

  • maybe it was that horrible outfit she had on....jeeez.

  • i love her outfits

  • After reading more of the historical Anne of Cleves, i say that I admire her for her tact, modesty and honesty. The historical Anne I admire for her wit, Charisma and cleverness. And Catherine Parr for her efforts to reconcile the Royal Family.

  • henry you look like a horse!

  • the king said that she is like a horse. if the queen was so ugly why didnt they find an ugly actress? this actress is much better looking than (both of) the jane seymour one(s). guess its hard to be ugly in hollywood

  • anne is so pretty but why does henry thinks she is a horse

    wow i love her german

  • @alienscardox5 Henry expected a boyish fantasy of his to come true, where Anne would fall in love with him immediately. She was never ugly, Henry just disliked how she pulled away as he kissed her. So because of her rejection he stated to dislike her. Don't forget, he is getting old but doesn't want to realize it. So her rejection makes him realize his true age and his injured leg is basically rotting and smells bad. For once he realizes he was not the catch he once was. For this Anne is hated.

  • anne is so pretty but why does henry thinks she is a horse

  • her german is very sweet ^^ :)

  • Hahahaha lol SHES A HORSE! SHES A FLANDERS MARE!!

  • Anne of Cleeves is the wife we understand the least, her will was to be modest and not "french" and immodest like Anne Boleyn or Katherine Howard. Her life before coming to english court was mis-understood. It is not charismatic, quick witted Anne Boleyn or sweet caring Jane Seymour that inspires me the most, but Anne of Cleeves for being brave and true.

  • Anne of Cleves was not ugly as it is commonly believed. Anne indeed was beautiful. She was tall, slender, had blonde hair, broad hips, and full breasts. That's a German Renaissance BABE if you ask me!

  • She has a nice smile.

  • Joss Stone is beautiful I believe if Anne would look like Joss Henry would marry her

  • The should of get an ugly women to play Ann cleaves because this women is not ugly at all I think she's beautiful

  • "I like her not! You understand me, I like her NOT!" LOL he sounds like a spoiled brat.

  • "She looks like a horse"!!! That's what I would say to Pocahontas and Mulan because they are not fucking princesses!!!

  • like a horse?

    holy shit.

  • I just saw Joss Stone!!!!

  • Surprise joss stone she looks pretty

  • i wonder how actresses feel when they have to play a role where their character is ugly looking..

  • @mars1421 lol I wonder too mostly about the actresses who get typecast as the "ugly friend'" .. like that's their niche.

  • I'm sorry but when Henry shouts out "SHE LOOKS LIKE A HORSE!!!" I just can't hold in my laughter

  • i like the music from 0:00-0:27. Does anyone know what its called?

  • My German is fluent and I had to look at the subtitles to figure out what she was saying. But unlike many other shows, the German is grammatically correct. But the accent she does when speaking English is spot on!

  • Hey, Your Majesty....This Anne here is not a flanders mare! Get rid of all that on her head and put a red velvet gown on her she'd look great!

  • beauty is in the eye of the beholder and i guess she wasn't pretty in HIS eyes

  • @JuicyGrape06 she was ugly in real life, though. I guess they couldn't find an actress that wasn't beautiful.

  • I feel sorry for Anne. She wasn't ugly at all.

  • But henry Have no choice he want a peace he have no choice to marry her wihout that is the war and he marry her

  • It is fair to say, Joss Stone is a much better actress than she is singer.

  • "She looks like a horse"

If that's what English horses look like, no wonder the monarchy like horses so much.

  • Personally, I think Anne of Cleves is pretty

  • Henry looks very well for a man who was meant to be nearing fifty and suffering from a festering ulcer on his leg.

  • oh and I like the maids with their german whisper ;D

  • haha its so funny when she speaks german xD sounds more like dutch.

but I dont blame her for that. I mean speaking it is difficult, she did a great job.

  • She is soooo pretty!

  • Does anyone know the name of the music piece that sounds from 5.32 until 6.04?

  • Also it was not customary for women from her country to be regular bathers and found her smell so foul that it turned him off so much he could no consumate their marriage.

  • hahaha that was funny i told you i was no good with women

  • I think that Anne of Cleves is prettier than Anne Boleyn in the series :P

  • they should have been more accurate when casting this show...Henry was fat and probably ugly too, Anne Boleyn was supposed to have been unattractive too...and the actress playing Anne of Cleves is very pretty though not quit a beauty

  • The actress is pretty but in real life Anne of Cleves was more plain and more broadly built then an english lady.He should have just stuck with Anne of Cleves.Looks aren't everything.

  • Her german is so bad. I'm Austrian but I hardly understand a word, when she was speaking German. Why don't they choose a German actress to play a German? Strange.

  • how called he call the lovely Joss Stone a "flander's Mare"

  • It's funny, that she bowed when the king came in, but nobody else did))))

  • i dont get it. she's pretty. they should have gotten an uglier girl to play anne

  • @CityFireflies Beauty is subjective, especially to Henry. Besides, it was not her looks that displeased him but rather her obliviousness to English court life. After their annulment, she was his 'beloved sister' & they became good friends. In the show, he initally wanted the Duchess of Milan or a French Lady but decided to go ahead with Anne of Cleves because none of the Catholic countries were willing to marry off their woman to him. And who wouldn't?

  • @JuzTudor70AD, beg to differ with you, but I studied Henry VIII for years, and he was repulsed by her ugliness. The picture that we see of her was 'fudged' to make her look prettier. She didn't look anything like her portrait given to Henry. This actress is WAY too pretty to be Anne of Cleves. But you are right on one thing.Henry didn't like that she was unrefined and since she wasn't English, he didn't like that speak English or know the ways of English Court.Poor thing was a fish out of water.

  • @JuzTudor70AD well tudors basically classed fair as being blonde and fair skinned, so a pretty narrow leeway she had considering how jane was both those things

  • @JuzTudor70AD He did not like her looks at all, he is reported as saying her 'breasts were too big and pendulous' so it was partly about looks but the German way of dressing was so different from the English Court.

  • @JuzTudor70AD also, the protrait that was presented to him showed Anne as dainty and delicate looking as were both his first 2 wives. When Anne showed up she was tall and robust with what was refered to as crude German manners. Her brother also encouraged her to speak her mind which angered Henry.

  • @CityFireflies like the Howard girl? I say...Anne needed a renaissance make over...she is beautiful if she dressed a bit different.

  • @CityFireflies, I know, that's what gets me about this particular production.Jane Seymour was a very sour, ugly plain thing, and Anne of Cleves was supposed to be this very ugly thing also.If she really looked like the actress playing her, does one honestly think Henry wouldn't of been smitten with her.He was repulsed by her face and the fact that she smelled bad.He was so angry by her ugliness, that he took it out on Cromwell.AOC was Cromwell's downfall.

  • @CityFireflies She was supossed to be Jane Seymour but she was on tour so they gave her that role, or so she said on some behind the scenes I watched on the DVD xP But I agree, she's too pretty to play that role

  • @CityFireflies i agree. She needs to be at least slightly more uglier

  • @CityFireflies Anne of Cleves was not ugly, Henry VIII found her not appealing.

  • @CityFireflies What they should've done was make Henry look more grotesque, if history proves accurate he should've been alot fatter and repulsive by this point

  • @TheBambieyes His attitude is enough.

  • @ravenscheer23 True lol I think thats why they made his character look pleasing to the eye. Probably an unattractive man on the inside AND the outside would've been too much for t.v.

  • @CityFireflies I could imagine that at auditions: "Hmmmmm.....you know we already have a castle whore #3, but how would you like to play an ugly queen?"

  • poor thing, she looks terrified and sad. i feel for her.

  • They gave her ugly dresses, but she was fine to me.

  • Poor thing. She looked so frightened and nervous. (However, she did what any girl would have been told to do at the time.) I think he was just insulted that she wasn't falling all over him. He probably thought she didn't like him, but really she was just not prepared to see him. Hopefully, Joss Stone will reprise her role next season. It looked like their characters could be friends. (Like history shows.)

  • I'm sure she wasn't ugly, just not Henry's type! But the actress in this movie is beauuutiful.

  • according to history, anne hath body odour..but she's the luckiest to escape the king's wrath and even possessed some of his wealth..not to mention his good graces...:)..smart girl.

  • I'm going to stand up for Anne of Cleves - she might well have been a good wife for Henry VIII.

  • Lawlsers. It's actually kinda interesting how similar the actress looks compared to the actual portraits of Anne of Cleves.

  • i would rather say that hes ugly in this scene and not her xD

  • Is there a soundtrack to the 3rd season? If so, what's the name of the song in the beginning of this scene? I really like it...

  • So Im guessing there wont be any sex scenes with the queen then LOL

  • Yeah so ironic, this portrayal of her (and yeah she is beautiful)

In real life Henry chose her out of a series of portraits of royal women, however the painter mainly made them more ideally looking for posterity. In real life she was a smallpox survivor and covered in scars from the disease.

While in the end they never consumated their marriage they remained good friends

  • yeah what a dog gimme a break, she's gorgeous. showtime is retarded.

  • aww wat a kind hearted queen...screw henry for being physically judgemental..XD

  • I love this show - thanks for posting. In my view, though, they totally miscast hte role of Anne of Cleves. Joss Stone looks gorgeous, at least as beautiful as Henry's previous wives. Why would he hink she's not pretty? It makes no sense. It's not even like he has a type that's not been met in her, after all, his previous wives were all utterly different from another.

  • ridiculous isnt it? shes an absolute beauty!

  • Joss Stone is really pretty. She did a great job.

  • Just because she doesn't look like Anne Boylen.

  • if anne of cleves looked anything like the actor playing her, I certainly wouldn't have turned her down :P

  • Henry doesn't look happy. :D

  • *lol* Her german is horrible!

  • yeahh you're right ;)

  • und wie

  • such a drama king lol, still brilliant though!

  • agreed...anne c is a hard role to play, probably the hardest of the wives because henry just flat out did not like her looks from the beginning, it wasn't like with spanish katie or anne b where they started out in love and things just went to crap...joss pulls off anne c's 'making the best of a bad situation' attitude with a lot of style and grace

  • that's Joss Stone?? I'd never have known... and does she actually try to speak German xD

  • He didnt actually call her a flanders mare ... it was thought up by this writer a few years later

  • Not to mention of course that Henry by now should have long become as wide as he was tall ;-)

  • *snorts*

As I've always understood, the thing was that Henry expected a 'Joss Stone', judging by this 'flattered' painting, but instead found himself holding hands with 'dame Edna, without the make-up'. Anne horrified Henry because he found her butt ugly, hence the 'mare' qualification. Very confusing for us, because Joss is rather a classic beauty.

O well, Jane Seymour is described as rather plain and look how she's portrayed in this series ;-)

  • Anne was historically described as rather plain too, with black eyes and an olive complexion (which was considered very unattractive back then, to them the fairer the better) but Natalie Dormer I think is stunning. Joss is beautiful too, albeit in a less exotic way. Even tv's version of ugly is prettier than anyone you'll see on the street. I find it odd that Henry refused AnneC because of looks, yet none of his other wives were considered pretty by the time's standards...

  • i think anne was alittle shy maybe...i think maybe henry perferred more passionate women...like anne boleyn.

  • well he likes meek women i think. catherine of aragon and anne of cleves were both strong and confident women and he's a guy who likes power.

  • Anne is really pretty. I don't understand Henry...

  • This isn't what happened! Henry VIII went in disguised as a highwayman and according to the rules of courtly love she was supposed to recognise her true love...but Anne was too innocent. She didn't know who he was, and Henry has insulted. They should have told the truth.

  • I think that in any programme/ film that depicts an event in history there is always going to be somethings that aren't exactly correct to the true events. Anne was a very innocent woman, she thought she could get pregnant by being kissed! Yes they showed thier first meeting differently from the real event. Other events shown in each series are not like the true events. I think with a series like this you have to see it as a show of characters rather than real people

  • That and AoC wasnt rborn and raised in England. Its not like she knew the customs.

  • "And I told you that I was not good with women!!" Really funny Sir John

  • "Your majesty will remember that it was Sir John who described her as being..." Way to cover yourself, man.

  • She looks like a horse?? I thought she looked very pretty. Seems like to me that King Henry is acting like a spoiled brat bitching and moaning for not getting what he wanted. :P

  • joss stone does look pretty. I think her acting is really good also

  • Me too!! She did well as Anne of Cleves

  • FlashGORDONXVFFR - Mary was siad to look only about 22 when she was in fact 28, she had always looked quite youthful

  • did she? i thought when she was in der 30s, she slowly "withered"

  • SHe did, but up untill then she had een very beautiful butb iguess everything just took its tall

  • little elizabeth is adorable. mary looks unbelieveable stunning in her prime

  • I agree!

  • incompresnivo a que jonathan convencia a anne de consumar este matrimonio!

  • i think joss stone is at least as pretty as nathalie dormer, just a different type

  • I find Joss Stone pretty too. And I applaud her acting with a German accent. It's just that Natalie Dormer (being her role as Anne Bolyen) is more seductive, which goes well with the character since AB developed her charm during her years in France.

  • and AB was supposed to be bolder, and more fiery. She was pure sex, Anne of Cleves a shy girl. But i cannot understand Henry reaction in this clip, Joss Stone looks so helpless, lost and so pretty, every other man would have rushed to protect her

  • Henry was not attracted to the meek. That's one of the reasons why he loved Anne. She was confident and NOT meek.

  • you have forgot his 3rd wife jane

was meek and he loved her very much

  • Jane was meek, but she was also able to give him a son. Henry didn't seem to have passion for her, only "love" for a son. Had he not already had a son, I could've seen him marrying Anne of Cleves to get a son, but he didn't want her as a wife if she was meek, and even Jane wasn't that meek.

  • thats true but they said or Henry VIII said he did not like her because of the way she looked it had nothing to do with if she was meek or not the king liked small women anne was big boned he was very vain he told them he would marry her if he found her pretty and he did not but i think she was ok looking

  • I dunno...he really loved jane seymour and she struck me as meek..

  • he was only attracted to meek after Anne got over confident

  • @JuzTudor70AD That's actually not a german accent but maybe you think germans speak like this. When she talks german in 2.15 it sounds as if she's a Russian.

  • @FlashGORDONXVFFR Natalie Dormer (my fave queen) and Annabelle Wallis (my least fave queen after kathryn howard) were the prettiest

  • Realy cute the scene between anne and the girls.. even though I think Mary do not like her much.. henry calling them princesses?? now that he has edward they are princesses.. ¬¬

  • Mary's probably worried of having another "wicked" stepmother, but later on, these two became friends... oh well, I guess Henry wanted to fulfill Jane Seymour's wishes since that was what she wanted from the beginning
