I love this song, it's very sad. I see it an an unfulfilled bored housewife lamenting what could have been or what is still possible. She feels she deserves more than what life has dished out to her. And I hope she got it!
@gordeaux2006 More like "unfilled" than "unfulfilled." Cut to the chase, she's horny, ain't been getting much, and wants some now. Alberta Hunter, then in her 80's, recorded the definitive version, proving, I guess, that there's life after 50...The song originated in the early years of the 20th century when you could come right out and say what you wanted.
Given the weather here in San Fran right now, this song is some serious "snuggle up and make some sweet sweet lovin" music! Careful ladies, this is some baby-makin' music for sure!!!
Well one thing is for sure this song was cover in Hedwig and the Angry Inch the words are different slightly but still the same context check it out and look up "Sugar Daddy -hedwig"
It could just be a song about cuddling and watching friends...ROFL. THis is also the best song ive ever heard in my life. I dont care who sung it first
please forgive me, but if you are gunna write down the lyrics, i dooo wish they would be without mucho errors....... but thanks for sharing, it is soo great a rendition! namaste oxo
A song so simple but with so much meaning, no one can deliver a song in such a way like Nina Simone can. Every time I listen to this song my soul melts.
I saw her live twice once in Boston but the best was at the University of Massachusetts. She was FANTASTIC that night. The Afro-American students organization gave her a Black Orchid one for each show. She dressed in a black jump suit with boots and her hair was braided. She sang her heart out that night. The audience went crazy, shouting for more, more, so she continued to play and sing. Her manager came out and unplugged the mic and speakers and told the musicians to leave before she stoped.
@jkoff76 ....that woman is to real in 2011 ,nina simone sill sending chills from her grave! or maybe she's reincarnated like her song {who am i?}pull it up on you tube,
I was well into my twenties when I first "discovered" the fantastic sound that is only Nina Simone, and this is one of my absolute favorites.
There will never be another like her, her sound was so unique and she sang and played with emotion so often missing from the artists of today. I'm so glad I learned about her and have her recordings to share with the uninitiated.
Adore this song, adore Nina, as do my young children. I purchased them all some great 70's looking Nina t' s. it amazes me how many aren't aware of Nina, but it's great when we meet those who are.
lavay smith's version is soo much more awesome. lavay, ah swear, channels Miss Bessie Smith for this song, just as she chanells BILLIE so often.......
NPR had a whole story on this song which is originally from Bessie Smith. It was a sex song. Look at the original lyrics "I need a little sugar in my bowl; I need a little hot dog between my rolls". We're adults here and you can figure out what both those innuendos are! It was quite the scandal in the 20s.
I'm so young to know her music, but I'm glad I found out about her by chance! This song can be both religious and sexual depending on how you look at it, but either way this woman sure has soul!!!!
An excellent track and Nina Simone does it brilliantly... but it wasn't ambiguous when it was written. It's an old blues standard that's old enough to come from a time when "sugar in my bowl" could not mean anything except sex.
This brings me to tears every time... Lovely Nina, it just doesn't get any better than this. I listened to some other versions on Youtube and no one even comes close. Thanks for sharing.
This is a great song. I just found out about this amazing singer watch an old movie (Point of no return) the other night. She is great! Glad I watched that movie!
My friend, Madame Zsa Zsa introduced me to this amazing song, standing at an ironing board in a dressing gown with Marilyn, her 10foot black Diamond python wrapped around her. Leaving the ironing, she focused on me and the snake as she sang, soulfully. What an act..waht a song! I hope to post a video of the performance for you soon.
...song makes me want to break down and cry... and put some sugar in somebody's bowl.
