this song is so amazing and so good. its like a diary of his life before he commited suicide. you can totally hear it in the lyrics and the music. so powerful and emotional.
Listening to the lyrics of this song makes me so sad, I wonder what the 'it' was he is referring to at 3.05-3.18? Still one of my favourites from the Buffalo Skinners album
As a life-long fan of Big Country . . . it saddens me to see here (USA) that they seem to be written off as "one-hit wonders" for "In a Big Country." Thankfully, the YouTube (and world) community has spoken and it's nearly impossible to find a *non* 5-star B.C. video. IMO, S. Adamson was one of the most fantastic songwriters ever, and we lost him much too soon. It always saddened me that U2 went on to amazing stardom, and I don't think B.C. ever quite got the credit they rightfully deserved.
@toucan13 I hear ya, m8! Many people, me included, consider The Buffalo Skinners to mark the beginning of "The Nashville Era" in BC's history; it wouldn't surprise me Stuart was thinking about the move to Nashville even back then!
I love this song it makes me so thoroughly miserable. One of the best Big Country songs ever. Reading through the comments it comforting to know there are others in the same place as me. Time to catch another wave.
As I have mentioned elsewhere, the drummer on this track and all of "The Buffalo Skinners" album is session player Simon Phillips. Mark Brzezicki rejoined the band in time to play on the March 1993 tour for the album. Two of the finest tracks on the album are "What Are You Working For" and "Pink Marshmallow Moon", but sadly these are currently not on You Tube. Can these omissions be added please? Thank you.

This album was like a bomb blast. It seemed so much more real to me than the posturing of then-hot grunge groups.
