I am trying to find this version of the song. The one I find is quite different, still shirley bassey, but a bit more studio recorded feel. This one has a more soul and rawness to it. Does anyone know where I could find this track? Thanks a lot in advance.
@elliehaha I watch it every day a couple of times over as well! made me cry the first time i watched....she is sooo elegant, so expressive, and he partners her so perfectly, don't u think?
Is their supposed off beat not a problem of You tube? I have noticed that more than once. I adore Gaynor and Donnie both. They have been an inspiration to so many others and you can't win 15 world championships without qualifications.
I love their devotion and although dancing improved trought the years we never forget this famous couple.
If I were 60 years old ,Chinese millionaire lady from Hong kong, my name is Mimi Wang, would I sign up a contract of millions of U.S.Dallars with Gaynor and her young husband Mirko? That was exactly what happened last year when the arrangement did not work out as Donnie showed up in the same night club, This young Italian Mirko called Wang names and told her that he did not want to teach her anymore. It went to the court. And Wang won the case- In Hong kong newspaper all over! dancewu(dot)net
Years ago, there was a dancer from England went to Cuba to learn Latin dancing, about the time I was studying Alex Moore's book Ballroom Dancing, and she published a book similar in format called Latin dancing. I could not understand anything, so I stopped trying. That was around 1985, and was probably the time Donnie Burns took lessons from Bobby Morales(spelling?), an American teaching Latin dancing. The rest was history. dancewu dot net
Like all the really great dancers they make it look so easy even though it isn't. I like their unpredicatability, mystique and the way they dance fractionally ahead of(or behind) the music sometimes (intentionally of course).
Let me try and clarify.Dancing 'fractionally' ahead of the music is Not dancing 'off time'. It believ it is called musical interpretation. In this context it is also known as 'driven forward'.
Dancing fractionally behind is known as 'laid back', dancing 'exactly' bang on time is known as 'straight'. It gives the dancing a different 'look'. More noticeable perhaps in swing, lindy hop or boowie woogie dancing.
Yes, you can steal time from other beats to make others longer according to the phrasing of the music or what dynamics you want from the figure. However, you can never dance in front of the beat or behind the beat without a real purpos. That's not musicality, that's dancing off music.
Dance music is usually 4 beats to the bar (crotchets). Each beat divided into four quarters. quavers, semi quavers.
Listening to a drummer you hear this. Dancing 'FRACTIONALLY' ahead or behind the beat is not stealing time from other beats , just reducing or elongating the pause between each quarter of a beat. The purpose ( intention)is to create a different look Not dance off the beat or out of time with the music.
Can anyone count 2341 in the Rumba from Donnie Burns for me? I have a very difficult time counting when he danced. Am I the only person having that problem? If I could discover his counting method, then I am half way understanding his secrets. dancewu dot net
mr: after 6 months have passed, when I see Sergey with his trainer Robert Zacharias used their concept called "OFF BEAT" Sergey reminded me very much of Donnie ans Slavik, and all these dancers are the best this world has to offer! I thought of your post here. I do that that because you could never be better than any of them, therefore their dancing off the beat is part of the new area that I have not explored yet. You could be right and dead(boring) right!---dancewu(dot)net
mrgbennet: From what you wrote, you are an excellent dancer to me. But please be honest about "Yes,I can count 2341 in their dancing."
Sorry, I do not believe you actually coiunt it with the music for the dancing. Because Donnie was really OFF-BEAT. My new discovery of YouTube, "2007 Sergey Surkov Rumba" tells me somrthing about OFF-BEAT CONCEPT! which is very closely related to Donnie's dancing!---dancewu(dot)net
a friend of mine told me that years ago. This applies to Donnie Burns. He simply got away a lot of murders by having that big smile almost constantly. It is a secret weapon of his, I believe. dancewu dot net
Excuse me, but last time I check I do have xy chromosome. what abusive lang are you referring to? I am a Christian, so unless you are abusing the name of God, I will take it. :-)
This video is just absolutely amazing. Watched Bryan Watson (who I really like as well) but neither Karen, not to mention Carmen, reach the elegance and charimsam of Gaynor. She is by far the best dancer I've ever seen, and Donnie is the perfect partner for her - in style, expression, talent; everything. 14 times world champions - now I know why!!
More videos - please!!!
And: does anyone now which song that is?? I really love it - and in my opinion they express it wonderfully!!
Their dance is great but the song does not help showcase the feeling they put into this performance. It is better to turn off the sound and play your own Rumba song. Even a classic Rumba song like "Oyeme" by Monica Naranjo - Casa Monica Vol 19, would have been better match to this dance.
I totally disagree. The song, Never Never Never, an English translation (sung here by Shirley Bassey) of Mina's Grande Grande Grande is passionate and emotive and they (particularly Gaynor) dance to it with incredible expression.

What do you mean "dance fractionally ahead of...the music". That's called dancing off time.
If the sync is out on this video that's a youtube problem.

The key word is fraction. Dancing on the 'rise' or 'fall' of the beat.
