I haven't read the entire thread so maybe this is irrelevant. I assume there is a debate over language and English acquistion and I'm responding to this perceived discussion. If I'm off-target, I apologize but I hope that I've still been of interest.
I applaud you for your knowledge of French. Knowing a second language at any command is a very valueable tool and enriches us in many ways aside from language skills. A well known Latin American writer wrote that knowing two languages is like having two souls. Now that I know multiple languages, I agree whole-heartedly.

actually I was in Nice last summer and tried my best at speaking to them in their language and they were still bastards. I know I was hacking their language up but i was trying my best and they should have been more receptive. I have taken many years of French, but like everything unless i use it on a daily basis I tend to forget it. The longer I was immersed in the country, the people and the language the more I could remember of the language and the more It became second nature.
My experience with latinos is that they are highly appreciative when you at least try your best to speak Spanish. Honestly, I haven't had a problem with French either. In fact the only way that I can speak 3 languages (other than english) fluently is from the generousity of other people whose native languages are not english. But most Americans don't even speak a second language at any sort of practical level. The reason why is simple.
Until now, we have never had the need to. We are almost geographically isolated. We live in a country that is bordered by both oceans, an English speaking country (Canada) and a Spanish speaking country. We've managed to get through without learning Spanish, or any other language for that matter. However, in a globalized economy such as ours, this cannot last forever. We are one of the only countries where the majority of its citizens only speak one language.
Many Spanish speakers DO make a huge effort to learn English. Native spanish speakers in the US also make a huge effort. But acquiring a second language takes a lot of time and effort and doesn't happen overnight. I'm resentful when people say that immigrants don't try to learn English; most of them do. I teach ESL classes every week and my classes are always full. Other acquaintances that I have constantly beg me to teach them English.
The fact of the matter is when you're working a 12 hour day (if you're lucky enough to have only one job) and working with people who share your language, you seldom have time to practice. You can't pay for classes because your job does not pay a good wage. But this doesn't mean the effort is not there. There is a huge influx of new immigrants, especially in Georgia. I watch as people I've known for years grow from speaking no English to speaking better than many native English.
It just takes time. It takes people who are willing to volunteer their time to teach it. I am a full time student. I am taking 21 credit hours, that's seven classes. I work 30 hours a week. But I still find the time to teach English classes twice a week because the demand is there. I work exclusively with a 6 year old girl from Mexico three times a week.
am one of twenty volunteers and all of our classes are full. I help organize a library in a community highly populated by spanish speakers. Everytime I go to the library, there is hardly room to sit because people are there studying, you guessed it, ENGLISH.
What would really, really impress me here...(and would definitely show me you're not a typical american) is if you could, at least try, (I mean, I know what to expect, but humor me) to get your ideas across in any other language (forget spanish, that would be unfair)... or is it that americans have always thought to themselves: "why do I have to bother? let them do ME a favor and speak MY langage... I can say "hello" "I don't speak your language" and "please" in 20 languages... and you?

Even if they do say they are going to do some additional enforcement along with amnesty....it will be largely ineffective....by design. We need to rephrase the argument: race and national origin do NOT matter. The issue is the skill and education level of immigrants. Low-skill, high school drop-outs are a net loss for tax payers whether they are from Maine or Mexico, Pittsburgh or Puebla. For one, the land lost after the mexican cession was land that was conquered by the spanish and inherited by the mexicans after the revolution. THe spanish actually took those lands from the indigenous native americans that lived on those lands, which by the way did not include the people of Mesoamerica, an area where prominent peoples including the Aztecs originated from. If the illegal immigrants were to be removed, these same "corporate interests" you refer too, would befored through supply and demand to raise wages w/o government legislation. Both sides use gerrymandering on the basis of race (among other things) to expand their power. Sometimes minorities are packed into a distric to lessen their influence in other sorrounding areas. The GOP has done a poor job of reaching out to hispanics, (w/ Bush being an exception) so it is their own fault.

actually I was in Nice last summer and tried my best at speaking to them in their language and they were still bastards. I know I was hacking their language up but i was trying my best and they should have been more receptive. I have taken many years of French, but like everything unless i use it on a daily basis I tend to forget it. The longer I was immersed in the country, the people and the language the more I could remember of the language and the more It became second nature.

My experience with latinos is that they are highly appreciative when you at least try your best to speak Spanish. Honestly, I haven't had a problem with French either. In fact the only way that I can speak 3 languages (other than english) fluently is from the generousity of other people whose native languages are not english. But most Americans don't even speak a second language at any sort of practical level. The reason why is simple.

Until now, we have never had the need to. We are almost geographically isolated. We live in a country that is bordered by both oceans, an English speaking country (Canada) and a Spanish speaking country. We've managed to get through without learning Spanish, or any other language for that matter. However, in a globalized economy such as ours, this cannot last forever. We are one of the only countries where the majority of its citizens only speak one language.

Many Spanish speakers DO make a huge effort to learn English. Native spanish speakers in the US also make a huge effort. But acquiring a second language takes a lot of time and effort and doesn't happen overnight. I'm resentful when people say that immigrants don't try to learn English; most of them do. I teach ESL classes every week and my classes are always full. Other acquaintances that I have constantly beg me to teach them English.

The fact of the matter is when you're working a 12 hour day (if you're lucky enough to have only one job) and working with people who share your language, you seldom have time to practice. You can't pay for classes because your job does not pay a good wage. But this doesn't mean the effort is not there. There is a huge influx of new immigrants, especially in Georgia. I watch as people I've known for years grow from speaking no English to speaking better than many native English.

It just takes time. It takes people who are willing to volunteer their time to teach it. I am a full time student. I am taking 21 credit hours, that's seven classes. I work 30 hours a week. But I still find the time to teach English classes twice a week because the demand is there. I work exclusively with a 6 year old girl from Mexico three times a week.

am one of twenty volunteers and all of our classes are full. I help organize a library in a community highly populated by spanish speakers. Everytime I go to the library, there is hardly room to sit because people are there studying, you guessed it, ENGLISH.

What would really, really impress me here...(and would definitely show me you're not a typical american) is if you could, at least try, (I mean, I know what to expect, but humor me) to get your ideas across in any other language (forget spanish, that would be unfair)... or is it that americans have always thought to themselves: "why do I have to bother? let them do ME a favor and speak MY langage... I can say "hello" "I don't speak your language" and "please" in 20 languages... and you?

The minimum wage here is 5 dollars a day. That's what the least qualified worker makes an hour in the US. From there, it's safe to assume most americans don't know what starving is. Do you know UNESCO's definition of extreme poverty? well, 70% or more of mexicans fit in that category. Your fault? maybe not. Can you do something about it? doubt it. Can you stop illegal immigration, you can bet your butt you can't and you won't as long as thing go the same way.
