@stephenvlog Hey, Stephen. Sorry if I sound like an idiot (I'm not VERY tech savvy). But what does the compressor do and what is the disadvantage of editing the way YOU do?
@DieZombieMario Compressor creates files—it can either take sequences from Final Cut and create them, or convert one file type to another. The disadvantage to the way I'm editing currently is becoming too reliant on it when you may need to edit multiple things together that aren't in sequence. It's fine to edit the vlogs this way since everything is shot in order, but if you had pretty much anything else it just wouldn't work very well.
Oh, I forgot to ask you this in my last comment, but what version of Final Cut Pro are you using? It looks like Final Cut Pro 7, but I could be wrong. Do you recommend the version you use for people who have never used FCP? Or should I go with X?
@TheShinjaNinja Yep, I use FCP7. FCPX sort of changed everything—not necessarily in a bad way, but in a very different way. People who are used to FCP7 have a hard time transitioning to the new software. It seems to be an easier transition from iMovie to FCPX. Regardless, it's actually impossible to purchase FCP7 anymore—you'll have to go with FCPX. That's what I'd recommend anyway, as it's the newest software. Just keep in mind that FCPX is not regarded as "professional"—at least not yet.
I occasionally make amv's so i know how to edit, i just watched this to see how editing on a mac was... I actually use videopad for windows to edit, it works pretty good, but it has a small video preview for selecting clips and viewing the finished product... dose this program have that problem? I didn't see any thing like that, but that's on screen capture, so it's hard to tell with just watching the tutorial...
@swordmstr121 Any and all of the windows scale to any size, including full screen. Sometimes I'll even preview the vlogs on my television before finishing them up.
I really enjoyed this video! As an aspiring video editor, I love watching Youtuber edit videos :D I'd love to see more tutorials from you in the future, but I can definitely see why you don't do it as much. You have so many videos to edit! I did learn some stuff from this, so thank you! :D
@docketter If I record the LP with screenflow (like Portal or Minecraft), I'll usually edit it right inside of Screenflow since the cuts are pretty straight-forward. For something more advanced (episode 12 of Amnesia, for instance), I'll export the file out of Screenflow and bring it into Final Cut. All console footage gets edited in Final Cut, though.
@MidgetLps Minecraft takes the least—it's a blind LP that you simply can't prepare for, and there's never any loading so there's almost never anything to cut out. I'd say Donkey Kong Country had some of the most work I've ever done for StephenPlays, since we had to cut out a lot of deaths, haha.
What a fascinating look into how you edit content! Like you replied before, color correction does look like it would take a long time and I have noticed a very marked improvement as they go along. Videos like this definitely put into perspective how much work actually goes on in video editing. Thanks for the interesting look into your editing routine!
Stephen, this was a great vlog! Given that I know nothing about video editing, this was really informative and captivating. Thank you for showing this.

Stephen I know I've told you this before but I just want to ask you again. Would you please try Media Encoder CS5.5? You know it is just like compressor but much much faster. It is much easier to use, I mean stupidly easy. Best thing you already have all the codecs so you won't have a problem there. Try it please I wanna know what you think!! :D
@sundaymorningfoto I've used it before (I have CS4, though), and I'm just not fond of it. While I don't find it difficult to use, I find Compressor way easier. I had to use Media Encoder over break when my laptop died, and I don't hate it, I just prefer the simplicity of Compressor. Maybe CS5.5 does things differently than CS4, though.
@HiLeonardo Sort of a mix of both—I've been editing since I was young, and I feel like I definitely learned most of this stuff on my own, but at the same time I learned some absolute fundamentals at school. Actually using the programs and keyboard shortcuts, etc, I learned on my own, but SCAD was mostly responsible for teaching me *why* to cut at certain points, and the theory and psychology behind it all.
I can relate to your thoughts about color correction. I enjoy doing it though, but I guess it's more fun when dealing with, say, pictures rather than videos. I do end up wanting to punch myself for some of the things I've done with my photos sometimes. x3
I don't use markers

I feel like such an amateur though... did you learn most of this yourself? Or did SCAD help?
