It's a Bartolini. Made by the Italian Bartolini Accordian Company. Hubert went to Europe with Howlin' Wolf in the mid-60s to play the American Folk Blues Festivals and likely picked it up there.
Pretty sharp looking machine. Check Google Images for pics.
4 all those people who believe or say Bueaty is in the eyes of the beholder when it comes to This Great Talent... I Agree totally !! But not in the negative way your portraying her to seem... She's is Beautiful in her Talent As She Is 2 The Eye.!! U all see the ugly in ur Selves. But 4 us who SEE TRUE, well Nuff Said! She could've " Rocked Me All Night Long ". 4 Reelsz
Great, thanks, possibly recorded Granada TV Studios, Manchester UK. Willie Dixon and pals did several shows for the station. NIce that once the aptly named Ms Sugar enquired what tune she supposed to do and was gently reminded she just went with her foot and rocked. I disagree vehemently with the comment by Mr Carspray from a week ago, or Kev as his Mum and Dad and his few blind mates call him. Beauty being in the eye of the beholder.
@joehiggs100 Totally agree. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc. Sugar Pie is still performing as sexily (if not more) today as ever! Now in her 70's, her voice and appearance has hardly changed at all. Check out her 'performance' at Porretta this summer!
@meamichael Yes,but drunk! Once she was gently advised of the tune she kicked it in. A great act and wonderful to view. I missed this gig but saw similar but smaller TV studio recordings in Manchester UK at the time, one including Victoria Spivey, similarly illuminated.
wow a real sanger and again another lady that has been not as appreciated as she should have been. she is one of the staples in our music today without here there would be something missing today.
whoa my first time seeing a live video of Desanto... I never knew she did blues too, especially with the Wolfs guitar man.. Hubert kills it in his solo!!
Terrific performance from a real artist. Great footage too ! - I wonder what the fun with Wiillie Dixon was all about at the start. I never realised he was so tall .Hubert Sumlin was also good (as always).
Many thanks for posting this piece. Magnificent !!

Now, just go listen to Sugar Pie singing "Soulful Dress" which was a big hit for her. As I said, she sang that number at this concert too. I seem to remember that her dress was a rockin vibrant red ! Just listen to those backing musicians and know that those were the men who influenced the fledgling sound of the Rolling Stones !!! @slimloo I discovered Sugar Pie Desanto years ago when I was going through Hubert's vinyl and CD collection, he had a few 45's of hers that he was on.
Sugar Pie's Apartment got burned down last year and her husband went back in to save their pet and was killed by smoke inhilation. Sugar Pie is underrated. She should be given some kind of recognition. She needs our help.
Sugar Pie was a little lady but with a big voice, soul, energy, and humor. Its a surprise she didn't make it bigger. She could have been a Queen of Soul. Some people make it and some people don't. A lot of times its not about talent but being at the right place. Any true soul music fan is familar with Sugar Pie. Beyonce, Rihanna, Ciara, Ashanti, Christina Milan, Cassie, and all the rest can't touch Sugar Pie, Etta James, Gladys Knight, Patti Drew, and all the rest of the soul sisters.
This is my grandaunt. She's my grandmother's older sister of 23 kids. My greatgrandfather brought 13 to San Francisco Bay and left 10 there. We're 1/2 black & 1/2 filipino. My aunt still got skills!
She doesn't really look it, but she's half Asian....."Sugar Pie DeSanto a popular rhythm and blues songstress of the 1950s and 1960's. She was born Umpeylia Balinton in Brooklyn, New York on October 16, 1935 to an African American mother and Filipino father." (wiki)
