I don't understand how it is done, but I think it is all so fantastic. Will be buying a DVD by animusic, you can bet. Merry Christmas to me! Caught "Pipe Dream" on Florida's PBS, tonight.
That "instrument" has both mutes and hammers. The mutes are the brown things below the strings, and the hammers are some of the blue things above them.
You're right, of course. I stopped and watched the video again just after making that comment, and paid more attention to the bass unit. It's actually both hammered and plucked, and does have mutes down at the base.
from the point of technology , i think this is absolute brilliance and ingenuity, i find it haunting to watch for a couple of reasons, mainly because it turns me on in an embarrasing way, but moreso, because i am a working musician and composer, i do this stuff with my own hands / heart/mind/and soul, along with 8000$ worth of guitars, basses, keyboards, and digital equipment...it scares the frick out of me to think that i can be replaced....but nonetheless i still find it thrilling/ the future
@777Marlene - I grew up with the idea that MIDI music was described as a brilliant solution for producing quality music fast, but there would always have to be a composer there to make the music, digital or real. Besides, hearing a real instrument play in certain cases just SOUNDS better.
I always looked at MIDI music like CG...there's always the traditional way, which the computer forms were built on, they're just another form of the art, rather than serving as a genuine replacement.
They're not random; they're arpeggiated chords played very quickly - triplets or sixteenth notes or thereabouts. The sheet music for this stuff would probably be pretty dense; "black with notes," as some observed of Mozart's busier compositions.
the best part is at 1:56

That's not actually a hammered bass; those "hammers" are mutes like a piano would have.

does anyone know how to play that main riff of this song?
smeagol147 2 years ago
To smeagol147-
I can sort of play it... On guitar, you just start on any note, play an octave, then play random notes in in the middle...

Actually, I've noticed that the rock phrase starts at about 1:50, where there's a brief rest between sections.

This should've been called 'Musical Flower', judging by its appearance near the end.
