Great song. Funny how they talk about democracy when they supported a Marxist for president. I still love R.E.M.'s music but find their politics hypocritical. Michael Stipe engages in a homosexual lifestyle, but supports a president who wants to negotiate with the president of Iran, who stated that homosexuality is a problem that they know how to deal with in his country. That method is torture and murder.

@TheDrOctopus The lyrics make plenty of sense, just because they're not self explanatory, if they were, R.E.M. wouldn't be as unique or amazing. Something has happened in the mother's life that can't be undone, irreperable damage perhaps, possibly she can't shield her child from the outside world, possibly she is about to die, either as she shows her child to the world, or possible as she dies, she says belong, because she can't, or because that's the only lesson the child needs for the world.
