  • Man, those some fat sticks he using. Great stuff.

  • Beautiful musicianship.

  • it's inconceivable that some of you suffer the unfortunate inability to transcend elevations,it's like casting pearls befor swine, sadly you don't get it.

  • Wow, I can barely play one of those things and just look how easy he makes it look ! Amazing people in this world, that's for sure.

  • Don't get around much any more @ 1:12, brilliant.

  • Freddie Hubbard!!!

    We miss you.

  • I was at this concert. It was like a dream... But if I hear this solo now....now it`s more like waiting until it`s over. Sorry Ron...

  • many good drummers have learned to wait, to have patience in the rhythm - they tend toward what we call "Jazz" style generally

  • I am 70+ yr old bassist. Been playing fofr about 4 yrs (instruction and jams) and just now studying jazz. My instructor suggested I listento/watch Ron Carter to lear more about improv bass line. Boy! If I could play anyqwhere near this ...!

  • Cause he thinks being improvious and spewing out random words is funny to other people...whoever liked that comment you should all grow up.

  • This is a good video who the hell said it was bad? you are all retarded to those who listen to crappy music. Ron Carter is one of the greatest jazz bassists of all time

  • RC and Tony are really kickin' it.

  • how can you talk about race or whatnot listening to this... its music and art and way beyond every little people like you or them or us or me...

  • This rocks. Back when AVRO acutally broadcast decent stuff.

  • whats that hat he's wearing? did he get a free bowl of soup with it?

  • Socalman75 is my HERO

  • i love me some cardboard box bass drum

  • Hay so cal man75

you might watch out, that sounds like an E.L. FUDGEPACKER statement to me.

and we aint talkin the cookies.

  • @socalman75

It's "to", not "too", ya dumb racist moron

  • Brian Setzer - Fishnet Stockings - Live!

The flames on the stand up bass are from his hands actually moving.HAHAHA..

  • The stand up bassist from brian setzer orchestra blows this chump away.

  • The triple stop in thump position is ridiculous! I love his sound

  • 1:20 - 1:27 wow! I've never seen that shit in my life!

  • Damm..sorta like Slam Stewart

  • I just threw up all my popeyes chicken and chitlins and watermelon

  • wow ron carter is the man beautiful melody quotes and the double stops and hammer ons on a double bass increidble not to mention my man tony just sitting back there adding amazing comping

  • triple stops in thumb position- hands of steel!

  • yea no doubt Man..I've never seen that..

  • hay benji, happy 15th birthday did you get your mom's approval to be on you tube.

  • ok napolean dynamite-no problem -1

  • AMEN mca7777744

  • This reminds me of when linus, lucy and charlie brown get together and throw down a jam.

  • This video sounds like my cat is walking across my piano, Damn My cats have more talent than these guys together and their supposed to be GREAT LOL...HAHa , My pussy is better than these guys together

  • xphoenixinflamesx , CyWebb

I knew i wasnt alone this shit stinks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!CACA

  • Brian Setzer Orchestra makes these guys sound like Alvin and the chipmunks.

  • Ron Carter Sucks Ass..Flea kills this guy

  • by saying this you show how little you know of this instrument and music in generally. congratulations:)

  • Carter's hands are HUGE.

  • TEACHER!!

  • i prefer ron carter as an accompanist over a soloist..especially with this this corny amplified 80's upright bass sound

  • agreed

  • I couldn't agree with you more, that bass sound is atrocious!!

  • he is a genius

  • just because his intonation isnt always perfect doesnt matter, its expression, a solo isnt always about "look at me, im completely perfect in every way and everything i do is flawless" its about expressing whats inside and in that way, ron carter is amazing because he gets those notes between the notes, and u can almost hear him coming out in those notes, i suppose in a way you could say his solos are somewhat microtonal haha

he is a legend and one of a kind.

    cheers

  • i read this hendrix quote that said "i'm so imitated, that people even copy my mistakes" when you play with soul even the mistakes just flow right

  • i'm a bass player and have an immense respect for ron carter, he's a FAR more skilled performer than i will ever be.

but this performance didn't really blow me away.

the chordal stuff is very tricky to pull off, i know, but it didn't do it for me.

and some of the intonation is just plain bad. (i guess even the legends have their moments)

some sections were absolutely brilliant, don't worry, and as i said, immense respect for the man and the music, but this particular solo didn't impress me.

  • i'm talking about between 1:00 and 2:00 in particular.

i'm not looking for flames, not professing to be a jazz scholar.

but i have heard better (IMO) and don't quite understand the absolute reverence of this video in the comments.

christian mcbride's playing on the roy hargrove trio's parker's mood album is much more appealing to me than this, although quite different in genre.

    3 stars-"worth watching"

  • god his bass is soooooooooo bright

  • i want his bass skills.... but i'd settle for his hat

  • Jimmy Johnson!!!!

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • i just saw ron carter in person tonight.. holy shit

  • some of these comparisons are a total joke.

Cliff vs. Carter? I think Andres Segovia could kick Malmsteen's ass, its a complete bogus comparison.

  • how could you insult one of the best bassists of all time?

  • you are a homosexual

  • There is a reason that Ron Carter is playing bass on so many classic jazz pieces. He's played with the best. Bass players owe him a great deal for the foundation he laid.

  • Chordal double-bass playing

    Monster.

  • Geddy Lee?

  • Did u see those double stops?????Way higher on the bass fingerboard?!!!!???What a monster!

  • those are some beastly hands. hes better than ill ever be.

  • man, all legends. Ron has such big hands and super long fingers!

  • You obviously dont listen to much music do you?

  • or spelling, *rhino ya jerk

  • if his sound is wat your trying to insult this video doesn't have very good quality, but just to say ron carter of all peoples bass playing is a laugh is just fucking ignorant y don't u pick up a couple of miles' records featuring ron and get back to me, also have a listen to the title track of billy cobham's album Spectrum that has ron as well

  • Makes me think of Cliff Burton! ;)

    Great post!

  • I like Cliff but Ron carter is much better !

cliff was very fast but ron is best in teorit (sorry for the poor inglish)

  • The sound quality good be better.

  • ron carter the one who played a major role in eryka badu baduizm album and tribe called quest low end theory album. great basses!

  • This defines 'slick' - bass playing to make you cry and laugh and forget about everything else, thanks for posting

  • Ron Carter is a living legend, he is not overrated. If he cant solo like McBride it doesnt say he is a bad bassplayer? Learn something about jazz before you post.

  • Ron Carter overrated?! Sure, I can't claim to be the biggest fan of his solo work, but it's his bass lines that have made him a star. He has played some of the most memorable and unique bass lines in Jazz history. Most of the famous bass players around today learned their walking bass style from one of (or all of these) three sources: Ray Brown, Paul Chambers or Ron Carter.

  • or jimmy garrison.

  • @dantro78 or Milt Hinton

  • Yeah, that's why he was a part of one of, if not the greatest, jazz combos in the history of modern music.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Idiot.

  • YOUR comment is pathetic !!!

  • Actually he's an excellent bass player. Maybe you don't like his style but that's just your opinion. Opinions are like assholes... You know the rest :-)

  • these cats dnt know jack u saying u know more about music than HERBIE HANCOCK and all the masters who have consisitenly recruited RON CARTER

  • Ron Carter overated? Where the hell do they get you people from?

  • its very good buts its not incredible, speed is not the essence of talent, and the tuning is pretty off at parts

  • THAT'S a FRIGGEN' ACOUSTIC BASS FOLKS! Dear God, no one can play that increidble even on an electric bass!

  • in my opinion, you should probably take yourself to the middle of the street with a loaded firearm.

  • its allright. i've just heard a lot better from ron carter. its still better than you and your buckets though.

  • He may be a little deeper than u are at this point in your life, once upon a time i didnt understand MILES,Coltrain. But to think we know more about music than HERBIE HANCOCK who has said his most amazing vintage session was with carter,he described it as flying while relaxed

  • oh my bad i thought u were a music dude or at least a jazz dude, sorry bout that peace 1!as u were.

  • who are you?

  • Well, your opinion is wrong.

  • ill just kiss your omniscient ass then, big donkey.

  • there are no right or wrong opinions, there are opinions

  • I think Carter's overrated too. I saw him in the Blue Note in New York a couple of years ago. I never knew jazz could be so dull.

  • Oh my god. Bow down to the baaaaddest bass player. He speaks, man.

  • Ron carter is the man :)

  • maaaan, watch Tony`s grip (3:30ff) - that is, where about 30% of his swing comes from - btw, don't try to imitate, only be inspired....

  • AVRO? Where the hell was this from?

  • what album ca I find this quintet on? is it under Hubbard's name?

  • i believe it was called 'the super star quintet' i dont know if they recorded an album or not.

  • Effortless! Mr Carter is amazing!

  • is that Freddie Hubbard on trumpet?

  • read the description...

  • i got immersed jazz when i was 12 and started to look for samples to use in my beats.....these cats here have been with me ever since....turning 30 in a few months......thank you for this clip

  • in this video tony williams looks like apollo creel in rambo movie!!!

  • rocky

  • Its creed. They are brothers.

  • ron looks like a friggin giant

  • Ron Carter is amazing, my bass teacher knows him really well and he gets lessons from him....lucky me!

  • =]

  • el mejor contrabajista del mundo, abuelo ron!!!

  • ron is real good look how he uses space to say something.some time its not all about speed to show technique

  • super
