you bring the crowns and heads of conquered kings to MY city steps, you insult my queen, threaten my people with slavery and death! Oh I've chosen my words carefully persian...oops wrong movie
I start thinking about what defines a person: how they portray themselves, the efforts they put forth in making that portrayal (character, integrity, etc.), and what lies "underneath" which the detectives here seem to be implying is his "real" self". It's like that saying, "wherever I go, there I am". But even if you're hiding something, you're still being you - it is "you" to hide as you do, etc. I love this line. I love this scene. I love this movie!
I think there are 2 ways the phrase can be interpreted. Or rather there are 2 ways which are most apparent to me. The first is the most obvious and I won't explain it - the question as posed to the detectives. The second, which I really like, is that the question is asking how it's possible for something to not be what it is - specifically how he cannot be who he IS. .......
there are three kinds of people in the world, the timid, the self confident, and the arrogant, the first and last are insecure, afraid of being themselves for losing control of their lives, Albert was the first, brad was the last, neither were truly secure with them themselves, but they realised that all men are equal(secure, themselves) just some are more themselves(secure) than others.
but then again, I can see other ways to interpret this.
I dont know much about psychology, only the things I learn from observing those around me. But I love developed characters. Even the bady language can add to an understanding of the character.
2:46 - He's satisfied with himself and slightly cocky. His barrier had been broken but its back up and he feels a sense of relief in this small moment of assuredness that he wont have unhappy thoughts.
from 2:49 - 2:58 he is really only saying that to assure himself once more and build up his confidence.
3:04 - He sees the reckingball coming to destroy his barrier and he is helpless.
4:21 - the Jaffes have broken through to his true self, not the persona he puts on
This is what I'm seeing. At least in the facial expressions.
2:30 - "who the fuck does this guy think he is? He's standing here acussing me of being ashamed of my own brother" while at the same time, he thinks the whole accusation is bullshit. Most of him anyway. So he feels the need to defend himself, as if this one converstion is going to prove his point to not only the Jaffes but also to his brother and himself.
@jackobthesnackob Actually I think the detectives were pondering the statement. That's how I take it anyways. Saying it out loud, mulling it over. I could be wrong ;)
Its obvious that Brad says "how am I not myself" in response to Vivian's question of "What do you think would happen if you didn't tell the story? Are you being yourself?" But I feel that Brad's context of the question was sort of reversed by the detectives repetition of the phrase as a kind of healing magical spell or mantra. Arent the detectives saying it in hopes of Brad realizing that his ego(the story teller) is not his (true) self? Do other people have other interpretations of this phrase?
@jackobthesnakob I don't think the detectives are saying it for Brad's benefit explicitly; I think they have their own moment of realization, i.e., the profound nature of the statement itself, irrespective of Brad's recognition of its meaning. It is a question that many of us could stand to repeat to ourselves. By repeating the phrase, one is able to deconstruct the ego and get closer to the nature of Pure Being. How am I not myself? Each repetition peels off a layer of artifice.
Yes, exactly. He surprises them with the question, and it derails them a bit because they immediately see the potential there. And become engrossed in it. I love this movie, it's so weird and wonderful.
apparently 2 people are not themselves this is an excellent movie

It's ok Peterframptonswang, self-awareness isn't a prerequisite for existing.

I'm a little torn as to whether he's saying he cares for his brother or not. I think thats what he's saying but it can be analyzed in so many ways.

There was a loose quick transition from the sad fat brother to Brad's issues.
So the sad fat brother was trying to tell Brad that Brad was avoiding issues?
