I am a true Perry fan. When I heard journey would carry on w/out steve I knew it would be bad and I felt the other band members weren't holding Steve's back. No one cares about Journey anymore cause steve is gone. He was the heart and soul of journey. Without him they are just another group of guys makin noise.
Steve Perrys' voice, truely has the ability to reach the 'core' of your very being. Not many 'people' ever do that in ones life. A true 'Gift' and one to be treasured forever!
He could sing the alphabet song and make it sound like a masterpiece!!! I have loved Steve Perry ever since he joined Journey back in the late 70's, giving my age away now!! One thing I respect more about Steve is he's singing Big Band music from the 40's like Rod. Rod got old and so did his music...it's a shame. Steve still rocks.

He ended up having to pull chest voice up to compensate for the lack of "mix" that one loses from the grueling schedule of touring with this demanding repetoire. He really should contact Janette LoVetri for voice coaching, because she could return him to his greatness. She is the leading edge teacher of this style.

Yes, we can work the muscles and exercise appropriately and train ourselves to best practices to hold onto those high notes for the longest possible time, but NO ONE but God Himself can replace what He has allowed "Time" to erode as we age.

I do agree with most of your comment but I do believe Steve could regain much of what he had in his 30s with the right approach. The Frontiers tour killed his voice. It became much more shouty. The R on R tour made it even worse. This is from singing every night and not having enough time to recover. Then one has to shout instead of use a balanced voice. A blend of head voice and chest voice.

First of all, it is quite clear that Freddie Mercury strained alot of times. Have you heard him live? Still, that does not mean he didn't learn through voice lessons (which every legitimate vocalist take constantly to maintain the musculature of the vocal cords in top shape). Steve and Freddie had two different tones anyway, yet obviously, Steve had more skill. Thanks to Sam Cooke and the old R&B singers he emulated.

Whatever anyone else says, Steve Perry and his voice has provided the world with a haven to go to in good times and bad, in or out of love, sad or happy. No one can take that away from his history..If Steve isn't singing because of the quality of his voice-AT LEAST HE HAS RESPECT FOR HIMSELF...by the way, AP may imitate Steve, but it was Steve who wrote the music, knew how to phonetically sing each word for total enjoyment.

The only evidence is from listening how he progressed from complete register balance to a "shouty" tone on the Frontiers tour and subsequently, the Raised on Radio Tour. He ended up having to pull chest voice up to compensate for the lack of "mix" that one loses from the grueling schedule of touring with this demanding repetoire. He really should contact Janette LoVetri for voice coaching, because she could return him to his greatness. She is the leading edge teacher of this style.

Truly, no one can retain forever or - for that matter, parisblue3 - regain the highest notes of their upper register. Yes, we can work the muscles and exercise appropriately and train ourselves to best practices to hold onto those high notes for the longest possible time, but NO ONE but God Himself can replace what He has allowed "Time" to erode as we age.

HA! No, I'm not Jeanette LoVetri. She is a very sought-after voice coach in NYC. She is the shizzle! I do agree with most of your comment but I do believe Steve could regain much of what he had in his 30s with the right approach. The Frontiers tour killed his voice. It became much more shouty. The R on R tour made it even worse. This is from singing every night and not having enough time to recover. Then one has to shout instead of use a balanced voice. A blend of head voice and chest voice.

A singer remembers and uses the voice lessons he/she learned in the beginning.
Voice is an instrument not unlike a violin. It must be tuned and special care must be taken not to abuse it so as to preserve its tone.

First of all, it is quite clear that Freddie Mercury strained alot of times. Have you heard him live? Still, that does not mean he didn't learn through voice lessons (which every legitimate vocalist take constantly to maintain the musculature of the vocal cords in top shape). Steve and Freddie had two different tones anyway, yet obviously, Steve had more skill. Thanks to Sam Cooke and the old R&B singers he emulated.
