The russians told them how to adjust their radars in order to detect it, they managed to shoot it down with a missile from the Mid sixties. Today russia has S-400 missile which can supposedly detect the most modern american stealth bombers and fighters.

Nothing groundbreaking to see here. We have long known that you can modify a radar to detect a stealth aircraft, the downside to this being that the radar picks up massive amounts of clutter. However, if you happen to know when and where the aircraft is going to pass over you can sort through the clutter and get a shot. Put simply, you only get a shot if somebody screws up..

In this case F117's had been running the same entry route consistently and it allowed the SAM crew to do exactly that.

@comsheeya The materials are obsolete by newer materials. The F117 was scheduled to be phased out in the 90s because of the JSF program. The F117 was developed specifically to be used against the Soviets and Warsaw Pact countries. It worked in Irag, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Grenada, Panama and more recently Libya.

Only one plane was lost in a combat situation.
