Hey Tom, I was wondering if you could do a video on the ideal gaming build of 2012. Parts that have the best bang for your buck and work smoothly together, I am thinking a 2000 rig. Maybe show the build process and of course performance. Thank-you for the great videos so far keep up the good work!
@tobak60 Actually it depends on the type of motion. 24fps can appear to be silky smooth until you do something like scroll sideways, then it will judder as too much of the image is moving at once in the most dramatic way. This is true also for film and you won't see that often because of that. zooming into the screen, ala a fps, you won't get that, until you strafe left/right. Still, a playable speed, especially when the frame rate is only dropping sometimes to below 30 or even 60fps.
@SuperGoldenstick Almost all do, a rare new format is 48fps, I read the Hobbit was going to be 48fps, not sure if it still is. TV varies between 25 and 30 depending on whether you're in the US or europe. Hopefully your pedantic self is getting the picture now, you don't need many fps to appear smooth, 30fps is fine for most, with occasional dips below that not really being an issue unless you're in serious competition or something.
didnt even finish watching the video before saying: that card is really ugly. blue pcb and ugly plastic thingy covered in gay stickers. not my cup of tea
@emerybryant You would not have the framerates the gpu is capable of processing when without fraps. When recording a video you're generally limited by your storage device unless you have an insane two-grand SSD raid array. This is a GPU review, not a gaming session or gameplay presentation.
@emerybryant I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but as everyone else said, Fraps is known for dropping fps. Considering most people won't be be recording with Fraps while playing games, it's much more accurate for benching to not record.
@Zacccc51 you dont mean too? yet you do anyways? im pretty sure you do mean to and yes i kinda got the point i was only asking to see if their was any particular reason or if its as many people pointed out and i kinda already knew that fraps can reduce fps (and yes i did know that it does)
Tom, I fold using my Playstation 3, and I've assigned your team number to it just last week. If you ever look at your team roster, you'll probably see something named "PS3!" heh. I know it's not a PC, but it's still contributing.
@leanlifter1 No, it's done for a good cause and benefits scientific research. It's also fun as you are competing with other people on the team for points.
hey guys i got a question im trying to sli two 460s on my crosshairv on w7 64bit, and in my nvida control panel there's no sli option anyone know whats up? i cant find a clear answer anywhere
@BarackMcBush The point of this card was for Nvidia to make more profit margins like they were suffering to begin with ERRR how about giving back to those that support them this card is a slap in the face.
HEY TTL, you may have covered this before in the past, but i was just wondering.. any idea why nvidia thought it was a good idea to make such a vast range of cards under the "GTX 560" model name? for instance, there is a difference of 112 cuda cores between the high and low end cards (448 vs 336), 8 ROPS (40 vs 32) and 12 TAU's (64 vs 56), also 256mb of memory (1280 vs 1024) as well as considerable clocks speed differences... The 448 is like a gtx 470 on crack :D
@krattlusker 570 has more cuda cores (480) and TAU's (60) than the 560 ti 448 (448, 56).. the Ti 448 has the exact same specs as a gtx 470, with much higher clocks due to revised architecture/fabrication
Tom, please read out the scores mate. Not everyone who use's the net or indeed 'watches' your video's can see. It might sound daft but reading the score's out would be a great help. Cheers dude.
@nozbit You can allways check out the written review for the numbers while watching the video :) that's only if you really wanted to know the numbers but I guess that's the whole point in watching this video.
Hey Tom, I've been looking to switch over to some Nvidia cards, but I'm worried about how the surround works on them. I read that mismatched monitors aren't supported, but does that just mean that you can have different (make and model) lcd's with the same resolutions or do the monitors all have to be identical? I have two Asus lcd's and a Vizio lcd running eyefinity off of a 6970 at 5760x1080 and I'd love to switch to a gtx 690 or two (when they come out). Help would be greatly appreciated :)
@TimeToLiveCustoms The monitors do not even have to be the same res, they all need to support a common resolution but they all do not have to be the same highest resolution. I have three monitors on my GTX 590 and one is a Asus monitor at 1920x1080 (my main screen) and the other two are hp monitors at 1600x900. But when they are all in surround it goes to the highest common res ie 1600x900 which goes to 4800x900 in surround. So to answer your question no they do not but it is preferable.
@TimeToLiveCustoms@billabob1231@Zacccc51@F4H33M97 Thanks for the input guys! And yes, I plan on having two gpu's, but I'm most likely going with the next dual gpu card from Nvidia (that being the gtx 790, so I'm told) then proceed to sli another one a bit further down the road (for maximum ridiculousness :P) I'm just really hoping they have 4-6Gb of VRAM :/
@SpineShank7 Correction: It's going to be the 790 :) Also, I'm willing to bet nVidia will highly improve on their surround considering it's becoming more and more popular. So at this point, no one knows.
Blue PCB or anything that isn't black is better. Why? Because it's easier to notice defects on the card and also if you burn it somehow, you 'll find the burn marks easier.
@TheQhozt Why the fuck do you use so many excalmation marks in your comment???????????????????
No, srsly... I like having some variety in colour on PCBs. (Even tho I wish they would stop using green and brown) My PC is all red and black in the inside and it looks kinda nice imo. But after all it's just a matter of taste, right?

would it not be better to record using fraps or other similar product for the game play section?
emerybryant 1 month ago
@emerybryant
Using screen capture software will stress the GPU thus reducing the frames/second in the game, giving results that are hard to compare.
Often a computer that will get 100 frames/second in a game will struggle to get over 30 while recording with fraps.
lewidogs11 1 month ago
@emerybryant I think he's recording this way to show you what the real world fps is. fraps hinders the actual fps quite a bit.
