im a beginner in starting swimbait fishing and i do not have a a baitcasting setup for swimbait fishing but i use a heavy spinning rod that i use for stripper and cat fishing with 20lb mono what would be a decent priced baitcast combo for swimbait fishing. please reply
i am at an opposite state of mind in winter, i throw smaller baits because with the slowed metabolism,i think they are more prone to eat smaller meals because they dont need the extra food. i see alot of people think differently about this topic and have heard both sides to the story, why is that?
great video! the baits you have shown are great and i know work, but theyre a little pricy for me...do you think the berkley havoc grass pigs will work good too? theyre much more affordable for me but they have the boot style tail. Any tips on where and how i can apply this bait to catch fish would be great! Or even a video of it in action :)
Hey Matt, awesome videos! I got a question for ya. I wanna throw some 6" huddlestons on braid, is that a good idea, or should I be throwing them on like 20lb mono? If I were to use braid, should I use a leader? Thanks!
@BigBassFisher97 Typically slower is better but you need to let the fish tell you. As for the lazer eye... its a more generic style bait and is pretty heavy for its size.
I can't find those baitsmith magnums for the life of me. I think they used to sell them at tacklewarehouse, but they aren't selling any baitsmith stuff now. Where do you get them?
@TheFishingfreak12 They all work but trout is the best option. Go to my website and find this same video. There I've got a direct link to the baits you need.
@UnitedPonys Sweet man! yeah I do. My friend on my channel got me hooked after he watched Matt's videos. We have caught some very nice bass on them, especially after listening to these videos. Go to Okemah Lake and throw a Hudd or Firetiger crankbait (1.5 strike king) in 5- 9 ft of water in the grass...it's killer right now.
What about rods/reel set up for swimbaits...I believe that is JUST AS IMPORTANT as what types of swimbaits to use...I would opt to use a heavier set up, maybe even a musky-type rod and heavier round reel... Can you elaborate?
matt you make great videos and ive been wanting to buy a swimbait setup and swimbaits to use in the clear tx resoviors but I just dont want to dump the money unless I know I can catch fish consistently
I love the Optimum Titan 6" in golden shiner, but also have them painted to resemble bass and bluegill. Thanks for the vid and good luck this fall when they start piggin out!
Hey i live in southwest florida and i am thinking about getting a 6 inch huddeston and i am wondering what color will be the best for where i live. thank you.
Hey I see you use JSJ swimbaits too. Did you ever try the JSJ Hellbird? You said you like to throw topwater too. If you haven't you should look into it. I have one in bluegill pattern. I haven't had a chance to use it yet but it looks awesome. By the way I love your videos and your very insightfull and intelligent when it comes to bass fishing.
hey matt i love your your vids. when im trying to decide what baits to get or any advice i watch you thanks p.s. do you think you could show us your tackle box thanks again
I'm glad you found it useful. That was an ROF 12. You'll probably find the main website as well. My screenname is the URL. The benefit of the main site is you get the videos with all the verbage that breaks them down and explains the details. Check it out. :-)
Dmbanik, Most of those questions have been answered directly in other videos. That said, it may weaken the knot over time but I have next to zero failures. I've seen no guide damage at all and a typical leader is 6-9 feet depending on the rod I'm using.
does casting make the connection knot weak and does it shorten the life of the guides? and how long of a leader do u use and also what brand of mono do u use
Great video ! Ive always wondered when to throw what ...thanks for the simple clarification. I fish in the delta a lot, do you recommend throwing swimbaits on braid ? Fluro or mono ? Thanks again for all the info
I've watched all of your videos on your account and on your website! I enjoy your videos and I'm getting a bunch of stuff you have recommended, please watch some of my videos and let me know what you think if you like them subscribe!
phytobedo, Fishing shallow water is common here as well. We have deep canyons but also have lakes that mirror what you're fishing out there. I have very little feedback on the weedless huddleston but I'm sure it will get bit. Another option in that shallow water is a slower sinking bait like the Osprey Talon (slow sink), topshelf, or 3:16. These baits move a lot of water, sink slowly, and offer the hook-up perks of a treble hook. Check them out if the huddleston doesn't do what you hope.
Thanks for all the great comments! I'm really glad to see this video is helping you with your decision making.
Camo, If we're talking softbaits that get lost or torn up often then yes, I buy them in bulk. :-) Hardbaits on the other hand will typically last for long periods of time. I buy them one at a time until I find a winner and then I stick with it until the bitter end. For example, I'm fishing my original lunker punker to this day.
Thank you soo much! Ive been bass fishing forever(S.Cal), but have only been throwing swimbaits for the past two seasons with not much luck. There are so many options, I never know what to throw. You are the man!
Thanks for the info! I live in south Florida. The big difference is that most of the water is shallow 5-8 max in most places and a lot of hydrilla, grass, etc. I ordered some 6 inch weedless Huds in Golden Shiner color. We have a lot of golden shiners and being weedless might allow me to fish in places I can't with an exposed hook. Do you have any experience with the weedless Hudds?
was that a six or eight inch lunker punker?

@Grizzbomber Thanks! I always use braid. In that scenario, 65 lb braid to a 20 or 25 lb leader would work great.

@MRbassmasterman ROF= rate of fall. ROF of 5 means it sinks 5 ft every 10 seconds
