  • The Pilot is an IDIOT! Did the passengers know, that he plays with their life?? I think not! He has no Idea, how fast it can happen, that the rotor disk separate if he do LOW G pushovers!! He had so much luck, that the helicopter didn´t crash! And the next dangerous situation comes at the LOW RPM horn! He exceed nearly VNE at high temperatures and get retreating blade stall and this with low altitude!!! Find this guy! He is a murder who plays with your life!!

  • I'm a flight instructor cleared to instruct in the R44. He did not execute a low-g pushover at any time. "Low-G pushovers prohibited" doesn't mean "moving the cyclic forward is prohibited"! Altitude, bank angles, power were all within limits, but I wouldn't make it a habit to set off the low-RPM horn (I hope that isn't a regular part of the show). It's funny how the professional (me) withholds judgement but everybody else can't wait to chime in. I'm glad you guys had a fun vacation!

  • This pilot is an IDIOT and should have his license revoked immediately. High performance maneuvers, at low altitude with 3 pax on board is just playing with fire. I'm surprised we are not reading about the tragic termination of this flight on CNN. If I worked for the Brazilian Aviation Authority I would be finding out who this clown is and arranging for him to come justify why he should have a license.

  • Can someone enlighten me if that was an autorotation when the low rotor RPM light/horn came on? I'm confused. With as much manifold pressure he was pulling and the "kinda flair" at the end, I'm surprised it didn't smack into the water. I'm not sure that the passengers had any idea how much the pilot was flirting with death. I also loved how the governor kicked in after they landed and sent the RPM back up when he didn't have hands on controls. I'm sure it was fun guys and girls, but NO!

  • this guy shouldnt be flying helicopters. there are good pilots in brazil but not this guy.

    a real helicopter pilot has described that if the rotor are unloaded as it probably is and then do a fast movement with the cyclic he could cut of the tail of the helicopter and then four people will be burried using a closed coffin. i have seen some accident victims in my work and it aint a pretty sight

  • Where did this guy get his license at?

    MY question is why did he have right pedal in during the whole flight?He had a pretty high power setting and alot of forward speed so shouldn't the pedals be centered?

  • Notice the light and horn at 3:17... That's the low rotor rpm horn and light, meaning the rotor rpm (what keeps you in the sky) was getting dangerously low. Not a good thing in normal flight operations, and especially not good with the bat crazy flying this guy was doing. You're lucky you didn't get killed. And the low g push overs... it says right there on the cyclic in the vid, "low g push overs prohibited". Do a google search for mast bumping and you will realize how close you came.

  • This R44 is an Astro, not even a Clipper. The Astro model is not equipped of emergency floats in case of ditching in water ! The Clipper is. Every company wich fly over water on a R44 must use the Clipper model, not the Astro ! This tells a lot about the insanity of this pilot and the company he works for.

  • The 44 is quite a capable chopper but violating that many limitations in such short time is simply insane. I agree with most posts here and would say that the pilot won't be around very long.

  • So You all know we mostly have professional pilots in Brasil, this kind of things happen in every place or country. There are people like that everywhere regardless the origins and in Brasil they are minority. If you don`t know yet, many countries hire pilots from Brasil and that`s because they know how professional we are.

  • I am an experienced flight trainer with a reasonably a lot of time on these helicopters....its very simple ... you carry on flying like this and you will have at best a serious accident, at worse you will kill yourself and someone else. Your dangerous. You have no regard for the flight manual or you or your passengers lives. Low G is one thing, rotor stall is another, you havent a chance of pulling off a an autorotation especially downwind, and your passengers arn't wearing life jackets...

  • I'm not saying it is good or bad flying, however, "turn him in to his boss?" Do you not think his boss knows this is going on? He does it right off the beach. It's not like he is 30 minles away in a canyon or over an iceburg.  He is right in front of the beach and potential customers.

  • McGreggoruk - please don't hold too much hope of getting a thumbs up for this video. As you have undoubtedly now learned, this pilot put the lives of you and your friends at very serious risk.

    As someone else pointed out, you should contact the owner/operator of this establishment before someone loses a life. Seriously.

    The breaches of both aviation law and good airmanship are staggering. This is not the work of a skilled pilot - rather some too young to know any better.

  • wow...take a look at 2:16....sure looks like his seat belt hanging there....guess the same FARs don't apply there as they do here about the pilot wearing a seat belt!

  • You won't get too many positive comments on this. It seems most people looking at flying videos are flyers themselves and seeing this pilot doing this stuff, especially in a joy ride situation is not something you will get positive comments on. I guess one positive... you guys are not dead from this guys stupidity.

  • Watch the cyclic stick at 3:00 !! on the second dive the aircraft rolls to the right (incipient to mast bumping) the pilot reacts with LEFT CYCLIC!!

  • Wow, did this guy actually have a license? Can't believe that even in a third world country that commercial pilots flying on Air Transport Ops would fly like this. Did you hear the low rotor RPM horn? This is not good flying, but a good example of poor flying skills. My bet is that the Brazil Civil Aviation would also love to see this! For what its worth, I don't and I don't know of anyone who fly s this bad chasing tuna.

  • Jeez!!!! I guess ignorance is bliss. The pasengers know nothing of how close they came to a serious accident. Low G pushovers in this type of helicopter are so dangerous. The engine hasa limit to be adhered too and many times it was pushed way beyond its limit.

    I will be wwaiting to read the accident report for this pilot very soon.

    Shame really because everyone who flys in a helicopter loves it even if its just straigh and level with some nice balances turns!

  • I could care less if this guy wanted to do this stuff on his own time, but hes risking the lives of innocent passengers who truly have no idea the danger they are in. You absolutely must contact the operator and at least notify them, if not show them the video. If not, I guarantee that there will be a crash, and it could've been prevented by you. It may seem like whistle-blowing, but this guy does not deserve to be called a pilot.

  • I'm a professional helicopter pilot and I can't believe what I'm seeing. All it takes is a slight change in the wind direction or a mis-judging of the entry speed to the manoeuver and the resulting low-g mast bump will cause the rotor blades to separate and/or impact the fuselage and that means certain death for everyone aboard. If he continues like this I doubt he'll survive another year.

  • It's not only an accident waiting to happen, he has probably violated more regulations in this 5 minutes flight than other pilots in their whole career. I don't even want to mention standard safety protocols.

  • A demonstration of really bad judgement, all around:

    no seatbelt/shoulder strap on the pilot;

    low-level over-water, a very, very bad idea without a radar altimeter... [5000 hours and 13 years offshore experience speaking];

    low level aerobatic maneuvering back to extreme low level over water;

    I guess this turkey's in the business of giving rides, that is a professional, paid pilot? I hope his boss sees this and discovers what kind of liability this guy is. I would so fire him/rat him out.

  • For those of us that know helicopters, this is a very big deal. The pilot took at least three serious, unecessary risks. That far outshadows the coolness of your video (for us). This guy should be fired, along with any supervisor that's aware of the way he flies.

    A "good stick' is an aviatior that can pull off fancy maneuvers. A "good PILOT" is one that can pull of fancy maneuvers AND do it without unnecessary risk. Being a "good pilot" takes more skill and experience than your pilot has.

  • Thanks for the comments so far guys, I guess you're all saying it was a bad idea to egg him on then?! :P Hate to say this, but the guy was doing this all day long with every ride, unless the passenger's didn't want "emotion". We saw it buzzing around day after day beforehand, so I thought it must be safe enough as he hadn't fallen out of the sky by then.

    I'm sure it's still being flown around like this to this day...

    (P.S dont tell my wife any of this!)

I'm a great guy"..if thats what he does infact say, would be better said " I'm a dead guy"..first off two aircraft limitations were exceeded, first being the vne with doors off, which would be 100kts and its clear that that speed is exceeded more than once, and second of all after the low rpm horn came on he proceeded to exceed the manifold pressure limit. Way too lead by example too, seat belts anyone, why isnt the PILOT wearing one?? He should have his license shredded, if he has one!!

    I take it this is another name for noseovers? Are they prohibited for this model of helicopter or just in general for all choppers?

  • @McGreggoruk the placard on the cyclic says "low-G pushovers prohibited" because unloading the rotor will cause an uncommanded roll right. the problem is that unloading the main rotor reduces its thrust and allows the tail rotor to translate the craft right. adding left cyclic only quickens the roll. the proper recover is aft stick to reload the main rotor and correct.

    descents are made with the collective, and very gentle movements forward on the cyclic.

  • @McGreggoruk This model and many others with a similar type or rotor system. What happens is that when you take the weight off of the blades (by nosing over, for example) the blades are able to flap down and cut through the tailboom or cabin, or separate from the helicopter entirely ("mast bumping"). This is a cool video, but the pilot took a lot of unnecessary risks. Personally, I don't care if pilots want to themselves, but don't do that to passengers who don't understand the risks.

  • @McGreggoruk The low G pushover is a maneuver that is more specifically avoided in this paticular helicopter but is potentially hazardous in all helicopters with a semi-rigid rotor system i.e. 2 bladed main rotor. You can "noseover" this helicopter while avoiding a low G situation and from the looks of it when he nosed it over he kept the rotors loaded. The ride sure was wild for that helicopter and potentially dangerous with the wrong pilot. Didn't look that bad to me though.

  • @McGreggoruk However, I do hope he has a good maintenance team as the wear and tear on that thing is probably a lot more than most R-44's are meant to see. Looked like a fun ride to me. I think I will take my fully articulated rotor system and do some low G maneuvers tomorrow. Oh yeah and keep an eye out for 10 hour students and googlers in your comments, I see a bunch.

  • @McGreggoruk Hi there, this is strictly prohibited in this helicopter. And without knowing all the other helicopters, I guess in general it is prohibited in helicopters with a teetering (or see-saw) rotor system (meaning two blades rotor system). In helicopters with other types of rotor it's not so critical. What could happen there in the video, was a separation of the main rotor from the helicopter fuselage, or the blades cutting the tail boom. As others said... Not pretty in the end. Fly safe.

  • That is what the white notice on the cyclic (the bit the pilot is hanging on to) says. They are prohibited on two bladed helicopters.

  • @McGreggoruk Well to some degree or another most helicopters have a limit especially in a nose over or low G maneuvers like the one in the video. Some are designed to handle it better then others, but the Robinsons are known for suffering catastrophic failures, to the point that the FAA has a specific caution against it for them.

  • @McGreggoruk Two bladed helicopter like this Robinson R44 prohibit abrupt low-g pushovers. I guess it can also be called a noseover (abrupt)/dive(abrupt) etc. Basically, you should not experience an abrupt sensation of weightlessness, nor should the helicopter abruptly tilt forward(this would be due to the pilot pushing the cyclic). That could be deadly (google it/videos)

    I'm no expert but this was a very irresponsible pilot and your life was in danger. Cool video though for sure.

  • @McGreggoruk Well, as some others here have responded it's not because of it being a two blade system.. It's because it's a gimble mounted teetering rotorhead system.. The low-g pushover problem can actually cut the rotor head with blades from the rotor mast because of the low-g condition (explained in helicopter aerodynamics during pilot training). This would cause the helicopter to fall out of the sky.. also the horn is not a stall warning, but a low RPM warning which also could be fatal..

    Just this helicopter, There is an safety notice known as SFAR 73 that prohibits it, too many of those helicopters had catistrophic in-flight rotor failure (The whole thing came off) Lots of fatal accidents. He was doing exactly what the notice says not to do.
