@PlayItMad Pentatonic is a scale, and he uses it a LOT. You don't need to go to a guitar school to know arguably the most popular rock scale of all time. But to put it in simpler terms, listen to a lot of Zakk Wylde solos, and you'll realize that some parts sound VERY similar. It's because he primarily stays in that one scale, and it's hard to be original when you're limited like that. Not hating on Zakk, he's a pretty cool player, but it's just the truth.
@MyEverConstantSmile: LIke guitarist said...he uses diatonic (7 note as well). He hardly uses one scale. While he does stick to the minor key I have heard him solo in D, E, F, G. He uses chromatics, passing tones, slides, and blues rock licks. You also have to remember that he only briefly had a guitar tutor and became Ozzy's axe man after only 4 years of playing. It seems people try to single Zakk out more than any other guitarist...but generally those guys are Slash fans...enough said

This is faaaaaaaaaaaaar from Zakk's best work, lol. Now, his two albums "Pride and Glory" & "Book of Shadows" contains some of the best guitar playing ever, and he was a pretty damn good vocalist in the 90's too.

@PlayItMad Pentatonic is a scale, and he uses it a LOT. You don't need to go to a guitar school to know arguably the most popular rock scale of all time. But to put it in simpler terms, listen to a lot of Zakk Wylde solos, and you'll realize that some parts sound VERY similar. It's because he primarily stays in that one scale, and it's hard to be original when you're limited like that. Not hating on Zakk, he's a pretty cool player, but it's just the truth.

@MyEverConstantSmile: LIke guitarist said...he uses diatonic (7 note as well). He hardly uses one scale. While he does stick to the minor key I have heard him solo in D, E, F, G. He uses chromatics, passing tones, slides, and blues rock licks. You also have to remember that he only briefly had a guitar tutor and became Ozzy's axe man after only 4 years of playing. It seems people try to single Zakk out more than any other guitarist...but generally those guys are Slash fans...enough said

@Aic1944 I've watched dozens of his live solo videos and I've listened to most of Black Label Society's albums and there is nothing special about what he does. Every solo is a shred solo; he had no innovation in his playing. Everything he does has been done before and done better. Every aspect of Zakk Wylde's appearance is contrived, from the way he looks, to the way he dresses and even the way he acts on stage; it's all carefully calculated.

I love BLS, but it's true that some of his finest work are his solo albums and P&G.
