I'm not a hater, i actually don't have anything against Selena except her acting, and i don't want one of my favorite books shoved in the hands of an untalented actress like her. @catiabranca My little sister watches Selena's disney show more than she needs to and i've seen some episodes where she acts "disapointed" "sad" or whatever because of some reason in that particular episodes' plot. The thing is she always acts the same! Her expressions are always the same and her monotonic voice is cringe worthy, but anyway that's my take on it. They should've casted someone with more experience for this role. Someone who's played more than a wizard in her career.

I mean, he sold the book rights to a film industry, the movie production has a casting director as all major movie companies do, so I'm not buying the whole "Jay Asher picked Selena Gomez" to play Hannah. I'm pretty sure Jay Asher got paid lots and lots of money for the movie rights therefore, making him a fan of any actress who was casted to play Hannah.

I'm also completely against people being cast due to reputation, I mean you should get the role solely due to talent AND fitting the character. In my opinion she does not fit Hannah, especially because Hannah was more of the girl next door & does not have the same look as Selena Gomez, who is very skinny & very tall. I could see her more as Courtney or someone who was popular.
@gianina17 that's not what happened. you should read his blog posts about it on his blog jayasher. blogspot .com he wasn't going to sell the rights to the book because people wanted to change the story but she didn't want to change anything. he talks about meeting with her and why he sold the rights on his blog. he even talks about it on his twitter, he's very happy about selena.
I actually think Selena will do a great job, and I don't even like her. Even though she has acted in some Disney stuff, she really does have a gift at acting. She sucks at singing, but her acting is great.
The girl from Lovely Bones would be great for her or Amanda Seyfried. I dont hvae anything Againast Selena, just that Iveread that book and throughtout the whole reading process I pictured her blonde because of the cover. Its not sterotypical its just what I want to see in the movie, whatI pictured her looking like. Again nothing against brunettes (I am one)
I, personally, cannot wait to see Selena in such a mature, interesting role. She might not be who people would've imagined or picked, but she was picked for a reason and what is done is done. There is seriously no point in arguing about who plays who. No one can judge her yet or anyone they pick, because the actor/actress might just suprise us and be the best frickin' Hannah Baker/Clay Jensen/Jessica Davis/etc. we've ever seen. all this fighting about which actress needs to play hannah is ridiculous. recently..we had to cast people from our classroom to be hannah/clay..and my teacher was astounded at who we picked. it was a blond haired girl(but her hair was red when we picked her and now black) and she said we were being sterotypical and just because there's a blond person in the cover of the book doesn't mean anything. honestly. I mean,hannah could be a blonde,or a brunette, but selena has the potential to do good :)

when selena gomez does that sarcastic way of speaking, it's because she's playing a particular character. but it's not all she can do. and while casting her in the role as hannah may be partly because of publicity for the movie, but no way would they cast her if she couldn't play the role.
Whoa whoa. Does it say NO WHERE in the book that Hannah is blonde, or blue eyed or anything. The american cover girl has blonde hair, other copies have brunette girls, redhead etc. Again, people are judging Selena for her "Disney" background, she is an AMAZING actress. It is going to be her "breakout" role probably, so obviously her acting will be top notch to the character. It's about what the author wants. Besides watch her crying scene in The Wizards Movie......she will have this down. :D
Selena may have only acted in family and feel-good movies, but she's not that bad of an actress. She could possibly do better at thiseroles than the ones she has done previously . She could evolve into a good actress. If you've ever seen 21 Jumpstreet you'd know Johnny Depp looked like he had nothing going for him besides his looks and now he's an amazing actor.
I don't get why everyone is making a big deal out of Selena playing Hannah. She's a great actor, and just because she started on Disney, doesn't make her a crappy actor. If you've seen ANY of the movies she was in, she is an amazing actor. I've just finished the book and I think Selena would make a great Hannah. It doesn't really matter where she started out. Also, Jay Asher obviously knows the character better than we do, so he obviously believed that Selena would be capable of playing Hannah.
I honestly think Selena Gomez would make a great Hannah. And as for the fact that Selena gomez doesn't have blonde hair nor blue eyes a lot of actors and actresses normally don't have the physical characteristics as the person they are playing, but normally it just ends up with that character wearing a wig or putting in contacts. Of course it would be more rewarding if the actress for Hannah was more unknown and actually did resemble her, but I personally think Selena is a good choice.

Jay Asher did a telecast conference at my school yesterday and personally confirmed that Selena Gomez will play Hannah Baker in the Thirteen Reasons Why movie! But there is no confirmed Clay or director yet..

Let me tell you why they WOULD waste thousands of dollars on a bad casting. Selena has a large fan base (people like you who would go and pay to see her in a movie) or should I put it this way: Would you go and watch a movie with an unknown playing the main role? I don't think so, the movie would fall short and wouldn't target a large audience. Selena has fame, sadly.

I mean, he sold the book rights to a film industry, the movie production has a casting director as all major movie companies do, so I'm not buying the whole "Jay Asher picked Selena Gomez" to play Hannah. I'm also completely against people being cast due to reputation, I mean you should get the role solely due to talent AND fitting the character. I, personally, cannot wait to see Selena in such a mature, interesting role. She might not be who people would've imagined or picked, but she was picked for a reason and what is done is done. There is seriously no point in arguing about who plays who. all this fighting about which actress needs to play hannah is ridiculous. recently..we had to cast people from our classroom to be hannah/clay..and my teacher was astounded at who we picked. it was a blond haired girl(but her hair was red when we picked her and now black) and she said we were being sterotypical and just because there's a blond person in the cover of the book doesn't mean anything. honestly. I mean,hannah could be a blonde,or a brunette, but selena has the potential to do good :)

I don't get why everyone is making a big deal out of Selena playing Hannah. She's a great actor, and just because she started on Disney, doesn't make her a crappy actor. If you've seen ANY of the movies she was in, she is an amazing actor. I've just finished the book and I think Selena would make a great Hannah. It doesn't really matter where she started out. Also, Jay Asher obviously knows the character better than we do, so he obviously believed that Selena would be capable of playing Hannah.

I honestly think Selena Gomez would make a great Hannah. And as for the fact that Selena gomez doesn't have blonde hair nor blue eyes a lot of actors and actresses normally don't have the physical characteristics as the person they are playing, but normally it just ends up with that character wearing a wig or putting in contacts. Of course it would be more rewarding if the actress for Hannah was more unknown and actually did resemble her, but I personally think Selena is a good choice.

And you can't put a wig on her, bc on the cover it shows that Hannah has pig tails. I actually thought that Effy from Skins would be a good match. UK version. I always thought Hannah is a little grungy, and not all that pretty. Either way, I will be the first one at the movies to see the movie.

I always saw Hannah with blond hair... and not looking like Selena. =/ I hope this doesn't mess up the book; it was really quite beautiful and would be just fine as a book, I think so myself.

I completely agree. But I foresee the movie turning out as a total disaster. I mean it always happens in movies where Disney "stars" appear. I would've liked someone like Emma Watson playing Hannah. Ugh I'm pissed at this!

@TheBratcat1 that may be so..............but have you read the book???? its a really sad story and it takes a certain someone to really show the seriousness of suicide and what hannah was going through!!!! she might be a good actor but that doesnt mean shes right for this particular part!! im not going against what u said, im just making a point!thats all!!!

Jay Asher did a telecast conference at my school yesterday and personally confirmed that Selena Gomez will play Hannah Baker in the Thirteen Reasons Why movie! But there is no confirmed Clay or director yet..

I read the song 13 Reasons Why!(: I loved it. I'm doing a 300 point project on it. I actually just wrote an essay about the author, & I thought I would look up the song, "Larry" by Buffalo Tom, because Jay Asher said the ending was inspired by that song, & when I look it up... I found this.(: It was a fantastic book. I loved it.<3

Hey guys, this is to everyone, if u liked this book (like me) read "Before i fall" by lauren oliver. Its also about death, and JAY ASHER said "this story races forward, twisting in a new direction every few pages, its characters spinning my emotions from affection to frustration, anger to compassion, youll have no choice but to tear through this book!" I got it a few hours ago and im on page 87
