  • Holy Mountain much?

  • RIP Ken Russell

  • Many people think Oliver Reed was just a pissed up hellraiser... I refer them to this film. Oliver Reed's best role - he was a MASTERFUL actor!

  • @divinedegenerate His finest role was Ann-Margret's lover in TOMMY.

  • This is where the Church gets you.

  • I hope you guys realize this is an nunsploitation film.

  • @Atreides22222 At the the most superficial interpretation perhaps

  • fucking catholics

  • Its quite true, for those thinking----Men and Women----ITS QUITE TRUE

  • Just finished watching this from a bootleg I bought for 2 bux in Union Sq...presume its the same source as this clip based on the quality and framing...Seriously, when will this be made available, and who in God's name did Russell piss off to make all future distribution impossible. One of the most stunning visual achievements I've ever seen, even in its weakened bootleg form, this should be a no-brainer for a high definition restoration and release.

  • Oliver Reed's performance is just...damn, it just puts to shame dozens of so called "stars" these days.

  • Stellaashker 1,,,, better than 9-5 for a lifetime....

  • I worked on this film for 16 weeks as a stand/in for Dudley Sutton and did many crowd scenes... I was there when this scene was shot....I was in the biz for 32 years and worked on many movies and tv shows.. Great way to make a living. I have nearly finished my book biog.. See Harry Fielder on web....

  • @harryfielder I know your work very well. From On the Buses to Star Wars to The Likely Lads (to name but a few examples). What an extraordinary life you must have had in this field of work. I am absolutely brimming with jealousy!! Good luck with your book biog, you must have hundreds of great stories to tell I am sure. I'll bet you'll have lots of takers as I'm sure many people will want to know how interesting your professional life has been. All the best to you.

  • @FireWhisp Put it this way, the magical sky friend you are preaching about, written in the bible, is the biggest mass murderer ever written into a book. Good thing people are growing up and looking at the bible for what it is, a out of date fantasy book, which some people still cling to as if it has any basis in modern life. You got to preach, so I get to bring your self-righteousness back down to earth.

  • The fact that the full uncensored 111 minute version of this film STILL isn't available on DVD/Blu-ray is ridiculous. Come on Warner Bros., for the love of God.

  • I heard a lot of people actually commended Ken Russell for having Oliver Reed burnt alive at the stake!

  • This film demonstrated the talents of not just Oliver Reed but also Dudley Sutton and Michael Gothard. It's sad none of them really got better parts after this but it remains an enduring classic that deserves a wider audience.

  • Oliver Reed described this as his best performance... well I can't say that he is wrong, but I would much rather see him as the money hungry step-father of the pinball messiah (at least he sang in Tommy).

  • Can someone descrives the movie for me?

This burning finale it's the most graphic movie image about human in a bonfire I ever see inma film of 70's and even 80's. Shoking... dificult toi watch...

  • @jerryaltman A lot of other scenes in the movie is graphic and disturbing, but it's still a great film (if you have a stomach for it). It's a dramatization of the "possessions of Loudon" where a couple of nuns faked being possessed by devils to save their skin, and the priest burnt here was blamed for working with the devil.

  • @jerryaltman have you ever seen The Hills Have Eyes? It has a burning alive scene that I think it more shocking that this one.

  • Unbelieveably, after agreeing to having his eyebrows shaved, Olly took inurance out against them not growing back properly!

  • such craziness

  • Great movie, but we also got to give credit to Aldous Huxley who was a genious. One of a kind.

  • Fantastic!

  • this is why im an atheist

  • this is how the u.s. would be if the democrats had unchecked power.

  • @cgboomer Actually it is how the US would be if either Democrats or Republicans had unchecked power.

  • What's the name of the actor wearing glasses and holding the crucifix? I remember him from a TV programme on Roman Britain in the 70s. What was the programme called? Thanks.

  • @Kelly14UK

He was called Michael Gothard (RIP) and was in a series called Arthur of the Britons.

  • @Kapricorn1 Thanks. It's a very very early memory from my childhood. : D

  • @Kelly14UK That's Michael Gothard, he's dead now, he topped himself

  • @mistofoles Thanks. Checked Wiki. Depression's a total bastard, and I fight it everyday. I feel for him.

  • My mate filmed it. Cracking fella. Just as talented as Ken although slightly less mad.

  • I loved the way Ken Russell worked....

    Aitch,

  • Great film!

  • I was lucky to work on this film for 20 weeks down at Pinewood as stand/in for Dudley Sutton.....Story on my web bio year 1971...

    Aitch,

  • @harryfielder

Nice one, bet it was a blast doing it.

  • This picture caused such a commotion when first released. Girld had left the set because they wouldn't do as Ken Russell wanted, but that was years ago, and still they won't release it on dvd.

Like many others, I saw it first time out, but was only in my late teens at the time, and was bored with it. I would like to see it again now, to see if my opinion has changed.

Pinewood hasn't made many pictures like this since!

  • Thats Just Harsh They All Just Watch Him Burn And Laugh I Would Try To Save Him Every One Has The Right To Live

  • @tornadotoz What's worse is they're executing him under false accusation.

  • This is a fictional sexually graphic version of a very real story which is more a tale of political/institutional corruption rather than religious fanaticism. Thus even in a more liberal world, such similar events of horror and hypocrisy still happen. Even then as now authority isn't stupid, but quite hypocritical and corrupt.

  • Brilliant! Ken Russell is a frigging genius!

  • Ken Russell is a frigging genius!

  • With comments like this no wonder this country is getting scruffy

  • Oliver motherfucking Reed.

  • ha an ultimate pissing contest.

  • really, the best film ever made. my god, humanity is disgusting.

  • @glassineheart

"I have seen the devils, and they are US . . . "

  • @glassineheart O, so you hate humanity . So you think i stink ? It is time for us God's people to burn you again.

  • @glassineheart This should happen to sex offenders around the world...and those who abuse children, adults, and animals!

  • I must see this now that I've seen this now.

  • hey I'm hoping to play father barre in an upcoming school play.. I haven't got access to the rest of the film so can anybpdy give me some character points please?

    Thanks

  • catholics you are all a bunch of caold hearted murders and sadists!

Orthodox church is the real church of God,you are monsters who burned people and forced them to do auto de fe

  • @TheHotelMoxa You are absolutely right. The catholic church are nothing but self serving hypocrites.

  • Doubt they will ever release this totally uncut, the complete version includes such niceties as a nun excreting explosively on the altar after having had a gigantic enema forcefully administered, the head nun masturbating with Grandier's charred tibia after he has been burnt alive, and a gaggle of psychotic, naked nuns screwing an effigy of Christ (not to mention graphic shots of Grandier having his legs smashed)

  • @mistofoles You need tostop eating cheese before bedtime LOL

  • deny your devilish master grandier!

  • Here is your Catholisism you fanatical heretics...this is the religion from whence you come...confess the sins of your forebearers...rest not in the arms of the true GOD....yours is the sleep of the damned....

  • Has anyone posted the entire film here. I have not seen this film in many years.

  • @Laughingbear1960 nice point....I found it on pirate bay, but it will take about 2 weeks to download... :(

  • @Laughingbear1960 put in the devils full movie in the search box and there you have it!

  • Love the bitter irony in the finale. Sister Jeanne finally got what she wanted. She has Grenadier all to herself. She took down the entire City of Loudon, but in the end she got what she wanted.

  • Comment removed

  • The peanus melted, his bowls and eyes poped.

  • This movie reflects all that is wrong with religion vs decadence!

On both sides there is argument for the cause!

There are those that exploit and manipulate on both sides for their ends!

    And the real innocents suffer!

  • I don't know if I'll watch the whole movie because I don't think I could watch someone be tortured with the boot without losing my mind. Looks excellent, though.

  • before i was burned i would probobly chew out my own wrists and bleed to death before i had to be burned

  • Burn, baby, burn!

    Disco Inferno!

  • I saw this movie when I was 10, and I was like, WTF?

  • it's based on the book by aldous huxley i think.

  • That one dude looks like an evil John Lennon.

  • @breezeman199 more like roger mcguinn of the byrds c. 1967 to me.

  • Thats exactly what i thought

  • I can't make out what the crowd is chanting anyone catch it?

  • After Mignon gives Grandier the kiss of peace, the crowd chants "Judas".

  • - Kiss! Kiss!

(priest kisses Urban Grandier at stake)

    - Judas! Judas!

(shocked, priest realizes Urban is innocent)

  • In this daring film Ken Russel proved religion is fascism.

  • Ken R proved he was an extravagent film maker- Hesimply gave life to history --which does not "prove"-

anything- you may rationalize your guilt -Religion is not "FAITH" - No matter -

Jesus is your salvation - with or without religion & Rome & the pope- or history-

    Do not follow religion -

    simply Follow Jesus in Faith

  • People like you are the reason wars exist.

I never understood why anyone would surrender their intellect to the teachings of someone who existed thousands of years ago and who has no relevance towards today's society outside of the perpetual masturbation over a purported book that was conveyed by the ancient version of David Koresh.

Read the fiction of William Shakespeare instead, it's beautifully written and in terms of morality it puts the bible to shame.

    The mind is your "salvation"...

  • When you look in the mirror do you see the face of stupidity?

  • @rentatrip1 That is the most smartest remark about Christanity I have ever heard from this commentary. And I am serious too. Just because someone uses the Bible for thier own horrible ends dosen't mean that the Bible is bad. Its the people that claim to be christians and use the Bible for thier own corrupt means. Sadly alot of people like Misterioso don't realize that.

  • Aurthur Custance - the science of Faith - and all Custance books - point to Jesus

  • The Bible is a book. It was written by human beings. It reflects political aims, philosophical assumptions, historical precepts and spiritual hunger. When posters like rentatrip1 threaten others with the threat of having to face X, Y, and/or Z what is the motivation behind the threat? Believe whatever you like. Truth cannot be spoken in any ultimate sense. At best we have shards of glass by which to see our own reflected states of minds and our own sand castle models for Truth.

  • WTF I never noticed he spit on him at 1:16 what a bitchass

  • ew its so horrible the way he's burning

  • 3:28 "Sorry, priest!" ;) This is one zany, powerful, daring film - and both funny and scary!

  • Free men, fight! (until the very end).

A hero tortured by a hippie.

  • Well, at least Olly went out in a blaze of glory!

  • one of the best and most disturbing films on the subject

  • I remember renting it on VHS and have never seen a DVD of it in any region. Would really like an uncut version on DVD.

  • this scene makes me feel ill, the most horrowing movie moment ever

  • happy 82nd birthday ken... on july 3rd. ken, my lord... my twin and i are ready to make a movie with you... we are ready whenever you are. seriously. there is nothing we would not do for you. NOTHING.

    amen

  • One of my favorite films of all time and by one of the greatest directors, warner bros needs to get there ass in gear and realease this cult classic on DVD.

  • The uncensored version...anything less is beneath the director's vision and unworthy of him, imo.

  • As much as this guy suffered being burned alive I suffered more watching this piece of crap.
