I had an opportunity to ride in the cab of a steam engine one time. I found that to be one of the top 10 events of my life. The engineer said "man you flew an airplane down here and you're excited about sitting up here?" I said "Yep!" I felt like Dr. Emmet Brown on Back to the Future when he let me blow the whistle!
Tractor255... I don't think anyone answered your question. Engineers in the appalachia region of the US tend to play the whistle as an instrument. The whistle echos through the valleys and creates a sound that is unique to the area. The proper signals are there, the engineers just enjoy playing "music" with the whistle and the blasts are exaggerated. If you ever heard the sound bouncing around through the mountains you would want to do the same. I think this is the answer you wanted.
Well I think that the Southern Railroad had some type of ownership in the railroad. The orignal EC&WNC was dual guage from Johnson City Tenn to Elizabithon Tenn and narrow guage from there to Rolling Rock were the park is today
but 192 also has a horizontal throttle...only the 70 class has a vertical throttle...so unless tweetsie has made some major modifications, the train is just weird
Is there a reason that all american loco drivers seem to hold on to the whistle chord almost constantly? Is it just showing off for the cameras or is it actually done so much normally?
The American Crossing is 4 blasts. 2 longs, 1 short, and the last is very long. It's because the rails go over a lot of crossings, and one blast would not be enough.
Haha, I forgot I used my other account when I typed in that message. But yes I have the up most respect for the crew of any steam engine, they are the ones who are keeping us safe from something that can be deadly. Steam locomoitve are not just park rides, they are beast that can have a tempor.

@southern4501isawesom it is the replacement whistle that he hates when that one (in the vid) is getting tuned.

I once heard this locomotive's whistle all the way in Boone, about 10 miles away. It could have been #12 but this one carries farther I think.

Why does she have a Vertical Throttle Lever the 190 Class Mikes were made with a horizontal throttle
nicholasbreeden 3 years ago
it probably has a outside linkage to the steam dome.

nicholasbreeden 2 years ago
wait i just figured it out it is a gorizontal throttle the camera angle is just different

If you mean the lever, that's the throttle, not the whistle. The whistle is the cord above the throttle.

Nice looking video. What codec are you compressing it with to upload on the net if you don't mind my asking?
js58246 3 years ago
H.264 I don't know what happened in this upload, it is crystal clear on my computer.
tweetsiefan 3 years ago
I forgot to mention the data rate is 9000 kbps.
tweetsiefan 3 years ago
Sounds like everything is set correctly, maybe youtube is adding compression to help save space on their server.
