Not so long ago, I always thought that Lizzy was perfectly right for saying that 50 miles is a long distance. That was before my Mum told me how much 50 miles are in kilometers...... Not much at all..... (You see, I am from Hungary where we measure in kilometers). So now, I say "Darcy, you are right." Although at those times 50 miles was a day's travelling.....
This version is 10000000 times better Than the Hollywoodversion. I don´t understand all the people, wich say, that they love the Hollywoodversion. I suppose they have no idea of REALLY GOOD movies. Colin Firth is the only mr. Darcy- for ever!!!!!
I actually find Lizzy rather obnoxious both here (the piano scene) and in the earlier scene when Darcy and Fitz come to call. In both scenes she mocks Darcy to Fitz, which I find to be rather repulsive of her. I know everyone finds her lively and outspoken, but at times I wish she'd be a bit more demure and ladylike.
@harrietcow But that is what captures her dislike for him. She dislikes him to a point that, she behaves so rudely towards him. Its often how people act in real life. Iv seen people who have the best of manners forget all their manners when they meet someone they dislike strongly. Its kinda nice to see the complete 180 lizzy does from this scene to the end.
Not the place to get political. This is just simply great art. I'm political and I despair at people who have quite legitimate views airing them off in areas like this.If you bloody REALLY care get of your internet arses.....................................
Oh that is right! What are human needs or human rights compared with "national" culture and inheritage?
Do you really believe there are any "pure" cultures, untainted by external influence?
Of course people with weaker positions in society are more likely to commit crimes, being immigrants or natives. At least the kind of crimes you do not need a good position to carry out!
They allways have. Why should people from outside Europe differ from that?
@danamariegordon Don't get me wrong because I love Pride and prejudice and this romanticised version of life at the time is simply awesome. I am also fond of the amazing british countryside and the lovely 'Britishness' of the dialogues and all, and it was really sad to see the way England has changed, but I blame it more on poor political and educational changes. I just feel that it is unfair to generalise about immigrants. I'm thinking of so many blacks/ Chinese/ Indians who are well-educated
@danamariegordon And to mention that these were 'perfect' times while the society was rife with intolerance towards the poor is, to say the least, a very simplistic comment. Most of these immigrants are there because SOME (I do not generalise like you) British people sit at home waiting for others to feed them!
@litvack13 and who contribute so much to the economy and are still considered as second grade citizens because of their colour. Such generalisations are just unfair. What is sadder still is that many of those who write grammatically correct English are foreigners!
@danamariegordon As if the lovely chavs and Asbos of britain consist primarily of immigrants( among whom many actually still understand the meaning of culture- and do not associate it with booze, fish and chips and hooliganism!). You forget that the benefit system has a large role to play in what is happening in the UK, and the fact that teachers, not to mention parents, are no longer allowed to discipline their children because of exaggerated laws!
In the book, Austen wrote that when they were talking about the distance between Hunsford and Hertfordshire, Darcy drew his chair a little towards her and told her that the distance was a big one for Lizzie only.. I've always wanted to see this scene in any of the 2 versions but unfortunately, it was in none :( This scene excited me whenever I read it in the book xD Particularly, when Darcy drew his chair towards Lizzie xD
I wish things were as they were back then. If a man wanted to talk to you, he had to call on you IN PERSON. No phone, texting, email, or facebook. Sigh.......
this is the video that makes me totally interested in watching the whole series. what strucks me most is jennifer ehle. she is so uniformly charming in playing Lizzy!! very charming indeed!! i'm quite amazed!! that sweetly elegant, formidable, not to be intimidated at the will of others embodied as a whole in her acting!!! makes the character even more charming then it really is :)
I love Darcy's smile!! So sweet! He just can't help it! And of course I love his face at 1:58. He is so annoyed with his own aunt. Who wouldn't be annoyed with THAT woman??
@Teresa6565 Well, if I remember well, in the book, Lizzie really didn't think much of the remark, because she mainly thought that Darcy was referring to Jane and Bingley. (Lizzie always suspected he had something to do with the separation of the two lovebirds, even before Colonel Fitzwilliam confirmed it).
@Natulcien1992 Lol yes, like me and my nan (who is very, very similar to Lady Catherine...bar the gorgoeus house hehe), and every time she speaks I just think "oh Lord, here we go again!"
``An easy distance do you call it? It is nearly fifty miles.''
``And what is fifty miles of good road? Little more than half a day's journey. Yes, I call it a very easy distance.''
Ha! When Lizzy left Hunsford/Rosings and went to Cheapside to pick up Jane at the Gardiner's (in the book), it took the party 4 hours to reach there. Take Darcy's 'half a day' literally since London was half way to Longborn.
Darcy gets her and she does NOT like that he understands that. I don't know if she'd every thought about that until this moment. Who would want to be near that mother? But that he tells her that . . If only she'd not found out about his interferance. Even if she'd accepted him, when she had found out it would have distroyed their relationship. He would have just gone on about his way. He needed to be told off! She'd watched her parents all her life and knew they didn't marry for love.
Unfortunately this presentation screws up one of the screwiest lines in literature, when Lady Catherine talks about playing the piano. "Had I ever learnt, I should have been a great proficient. And so should Anne if her health had allowed her to apply." Lady Catherine does not lack one iota in the self-confidence department, but Elizabeth Bennett bests her in every encounter.
Colonel Fitzwilliam is really handsome (at least in this version). Not quite on the level of the smoldering hot Mr. Darcy, but still attractive. Too bad he was a younger son of the Earl and needed to find a wife with her own fortune...
Lizzie and Darcy are destined, but you can't help thinking such a nice fellow as Darcy's cousin deserves someone wonderful too...
Dude, Firth is good at this. The stiffness that shows awkwardness and shyness being hidden behind a false wall of pride, the flitty deep eyes that show the internal so DANG well (seriously, how did he do that?), the wonderful uncomfortableness even in his most dignified moments. Such a great portrayal not only of a shy, decent man, but of all us too-shy-to-know-exactly-how-to-do-this-society-thing types out there.
Lizzy knows well how to show her distress by the news about Mr. Darcy's direct interference with Jane's marriage. She does not look pale or blush yet her eyes are very expressive of the turbulent emotion felt at the moment of the horrid revelation.
This is one of the best scenes in the entire series. It completely captures the nature of their relationship. He wants so much to be with her, but he's holding himself back, and so is his aunt. She plays with him, thinking she's pushing him away, but he wants more! He likes her so much he doesn;t mind her impertinance. She is so prejudice she can't see his smiles and his sweetness. Oh..and he's a super hottie :-)
This is the best production of P&P but it does screw up one of the best lines in literature: Lady Catherine, "I think there is no one who has a greater enjoyment in music that I, and if I had ever learnt I should have been a true proficient, and so would Anne if her health had allowed her to apply."
At 4:40 - - oops, he certainly let the cat out of the bag then! - - when he asked about her not living too close to her family home. Penny for the thoughts that went around in Lizzie's head after that statement.
"i am not afraid of you" of course he is. he's scared shitless (forgive the rude word :D) for being so much in love with her. he's head over heels! :D
"...Near Longborn..." read Pemberly is a touch bit farther than that to your current home, but I do dream to persuade you to come to live there with me as my wife!!! ;-) Sweet, sweet!!!
I love how this Mr Darcy sort of smiles. Not that I don't like the very serious Darcy, but Colin Firth always seems to have a little smirk/smile on his face when he talks to Elizabeth.
Oh i laughed soo hard at 1:57 cuz theres that long moment of connection with darcy and eliza but then Lady Catherine and her big mouth had to ruin it. I so dearly love Mr. Darcy's expression!!!!
Colin firth has thee most beautiful eyes I must confess,I can sense his intense love of her already.Jennifer Elhe is the perfect lizzy.I think she's trumphs kiera knightly as she is portrayed with such style, her character is given a new life compared to 1940 's smuck.
and Kiera was too impoverished and unnatural compared to the utter comfortable lizzy of this
@vampiressmiharu even more beautiful than hollywood box office girls, but lets not forget oscar award winners like nicole kidman or kate winslet, gorgeous
i could imagine a lot of bloopers during their scene where theyre both looking away saying nothing...just a lot of them breaking out laughing...i sure did start laughing :) and lizzy is so gorgeous, she has such an old hollywood beauty, like a silent film star, so simple, but just as beautiful as any other girl in hollywood nowadays
Colin Firth is super hot!! I think he makes a great Darcy and I love matthew too. I mean he not the most handsome but he makes the role his own and is charming as all!! I just wish that Colin was younger around the time the second movie was made:))
Darcy's acceptance and subsequent close relationship with the Gardiners is also omitted in this and every other version. Too bad because it is the culmination of the internal change in him as he overcomes his self importance. Read the book and see how much had been deleted, changed, juxtaposed or converted. Dialogue from 1 character is assigned to another or the time line has been changed for dramatic contrast, and so on. So much for all the claims that this version so closely follows the book.
@rasta13820 : Too true. I always wondered why Ms Austen was remiss in telling darcy's side of the story. The man went thru a humiliating rejection and went back again for his true love.
I read the abridged version first and the original later. But ur rght, 1995 version could've been better and they had bloody 6 hrs to do justice. About the 2005 version, well what can i say the poor guy had only 2 hrs.
@rasta13820 In fairness it does follow the book as closely as possible, although I see your point. However certain aspects of the book I think would be difficult to portray as well on screen. So overall I think in general this version does represent the book more closely than any other production and as near as possible to the book. I think this version enhances the book in a way, although I would always encourage people to read the book first, in fact all of Jane Austen's work.
@gilyat I agree; however, the P&P 1980 is truer to the book, at least in dialogue, though I prefer this version. The enhancements in this version are sins of commission than omission and serve mainly to flesh out Darcy's character, something I find lacking in the book. So we have all the popular scenes that the ladies are swooning for (bathing, fencing, swimming in lake, double wedding, etc.) that are not in the book. The omissions are more disturbing and cause some of the questions here.
@vaava1980 "I have not that talent which some possess of conversing easily with strangers". This was an honest confession from Darcy but he was also trying to tell Lizzy that though he does not have the amiable, easy going manners of Wickham which gives him the advantage in social graces, he's still a man of character & integrity. Darcy's shyness is really from self importance and his ability to overcome this aspect of his character is realized in his close relationship to the Gardiners.
@rasta13820 The reason I like this one the most is because I am very interested in historic fashions... This is the most accurate with the costuming, with the 1980 version in second place. Of course, the 1940 version is very incorrect with the costumes, but Greer Garson as Elizabeth is amazing. 2005 doesn't even count, for me. I nearly tear my head off each time that I see Kiera wearing that green dress to Rosings!
@TheLeopardBrightsky Totally agree! The details in this series are amazing and though the dresses are unflattering in some scenes, they are true to the Regency period. The 1940 version was Hollywood in the worst way & in 2005, Keira was made to be poorer than portrayed in the book. However, it wasn't just the clothes for Keira never had the posture or carriage of a refined lady. And I love the way Eliza runs like a boy here; she could not do that dressed in 1940 version.
@rasta13820 By unflattering, do you mean on Mary? I think, from a BBC online article on the costumes, the costumers mentioned something about making Mary plain.
I don't blame Hollywood for the 1940 version, because I can't find anything on when the actual Regency dress was remembered. I do know, however, that it was quite recent. Prior to that unknown date, the general public assumed that the dress was the hoopskirt style.
I guess it's not just at Rosings. Eliza wears the green dress everywhere!
"No one admitted to the privilege of hearing you could think anything wanting." If you didn't read the book this statement is perplexing because Lizzy plays horribly here. However, this isn't the 1st time that Darcy had heard her perform; it was at Lucas Lodge and she played before Mary. Her performance was 1/2 as good but generally preferred because she lacked Mary's vanity. Too bad the scene was omitted in episode 1.
xDD Oh, Mr. Darcy, we all love you. Now go dive in a lake and walk up to my house for me. "Oh, I did not expect to see you here... Wet... With your tousled hair... And... shirt... It looks too wet, would you like to take it off? I'll dry it for you... Just lay there in that patch of sun and dry yourself. Don't mind the painter, he's just painting the landscape... Not you, of course.... It's not like I'd have a picture of you in my room, wet and shirtless... How silly..."
"I have not that talent which some possess of conversing easily with strangers". I think that this was the most honest confession Elizabeth got out of Mr Darcy. but she's too prejudiced to notice. Mr.Firth has certainly captured the painful confession of shy and taciturn Mr Darcy beautifully.
I like this version of Colonel Fitzwilliam. He's very elegant and charming- and handsome. Unlike the 2005 Pride & Prejudice version, well he's a little scruffy looking- but still charming.
He means he has nothing to prove to anyone in public, and is not interested or caring of anyones opinion of him for his attitude.
Thats the silly thing about it, the man again is seen to be weak at the knees and loses all control of himself for this girl, it's the same in all the novels, the man proves to be a blubbering wreck who has lost control giving the woman the emotional edge, its crazy.
ElizabethS face is nicely expressive, nit to much, and too little, now that is good acting, other old movies I've seen are way too irrealistic, but this one or so wonderfully made, 5* to the director
I just love Colin Firth as Darcy. It's all about subtlty in his performance. How Darcy's smile changes from just the barest upturn of the lips at the beginning, to at the piano, where it touches his eyes. He has this fantastic presence that just commands the attention of the room. And physically, he's perfect as well. Of course.
@ZeperandAzmyth but he's too old now! you cant fantasise about him as Darcy coz then you suddenly remember he's like 40 - something! its so disappointing! why must people age? WHY!??
i could totally go for fitzwilliam. he is fun too. don't get me wrong, i love mr. darcy, but since he is obviously already taken, i would take fitzwilliam as a second. or mr. bingley too. sooo much better than mr. collins, but that goes without saying.
People who like upsters downstairs can you have a look at my show DAYS GONE BYE it is very mute like upsters downsters please lever a comment on if you think it is good or not
She is too blinded by her hatred for him to notice his admiration for her, and when she does notice, she believes he is finding fault with her and her figure.
This is my second favorite scene ~ Colin Firth's roll of the eyes as Darcy when the Aunt speaks is hysterical. He portrays Darcy exactly as I pictured him when I read the book so many years ago.
It's fun to see that Elizabeth must be the first person in the world to speak freely to Darcy and his ant, but while the latter is horrified, the former is fascinated
@giliellthesecond You must admit they have diferent objectives, the aunt see's her as a rival for Mr Darcys affections. AS he said, we, neither of us perform for others, meaning that they both speak there version of the truth.
@ilovemusic121296 the ending was cut short and that is the only SMALL fault with this adaptation, Jennifer is perfect as the tomboy role which having read the book i believe is a vital part of the whole book

This is the best production of P&P but it does screw up one of the best lines in literature: Lady Catherine, "I think there is no one who has a greater enjoyment in music that I, and if I had ever learnt I should have been a true proficient, and so would Anne if her health had allowed her to apply."

So much for all the claims that this version so closely follows the book.
rasta13820 1 year ago
@rasta13820 : Too true. I always wondered why Ms Austen was remiss in telling darcy's side of the story. The man went thru a humiliating rejection and went back again for his true love.
I read the abridged version first and the original later. But ur rght, 1995 version could've been better and they had bloody 6 hrs to do justice. About the 2005 version, well what can i say the poor guy had only 2 hrs.
vaava1980 1 year ago
@rasta13820 In fairness it does follow the book as closely as possible, although I see your point. However certain aspects of the book I think would be difficult to portray as well on screen. So overall I think in general this version does represent the book more closely than any other production and as near as possible to the book. I think this version enhances the book in a way, although I would always encourage people to read the book first, in fact all of Jane Austen's work.
gilyat 1 year ago
@gilyat I agree; however, the P&P 1980 is truer to the book, at least in dialogue, though I prefer this version. The enhancements in this version are sins of commission than omission and serve mainly to flesh out Darcy's character, something I find lacking in the book. So we have all the popular scenes that the ladies are swooning for (bathing, fencing, swimming in lake, double wedding, etc.) that are not in the book. The omissions are more disturbing and cause some of the questions here.
rasta13820 1 year ago
rasta13820: How so.. If u dnt mind?
vaava1980 1 year ago
@vaava1980 "I have not that talent which some possess of conversing easily with strangers". This was an honest confession from Darcy but he was also trying to tell Lizzy that though he does not have the amiable, easy going manners of Wickham which gives him the advantage in social graces, he's still a man of character & integrity. Darcy's shyness is really from self importance and his ability to overcome this aspect of his character is realized in his close relationship to the Gardiners.
rasta13820 1 year ago 4
@rasta13820 The reason I like this one the most is because I am very interested in historic fashions... This is the most accurate with the costuming, with the 1980 version in second place. Of course, the 1940 version is very incorrect with the costumes, but Greer Garson as Elizabeth is amazing. 2005 doesn't even count, for me. I nearly tear my head off each time that I see Kiera wearing that green dress to Rosings!
TheLeopardBrightsky 1 year ago
@TheLeopardBrightsky Totally agree! The details in this series are amazing and though the dresses are unflattering in some scenes, they are true to the Regency period. The 1940 version was Hollywood in the worst way & in 2005, Keira was made to be poorer than portrayed in the book. However, it wasn't just the clothes for Keira never had the posture or carriage of a refined lady. And I love the way Eliza runs like a boy here; she could not do that dressed in 1940 version.
rasta13820 1 year ago
@rasta13820 By unflattering, do you mean on Mary? I think, from a BBC online article on the costumes, the costumers mentioned something about making Mary plain.
I don't blame Hollywood for the 1940 version, because I can't find anything on when the actual Regency dress was remembered. I do know, however, that it was quite recent. Prior to that unknown date, the general public assumed that the dress was the hoopskirt style.
I guess it's not just at Rosings. Eliza wears the green dress everywhere!

pentime6 1 year ago
"No one admitted to the privilege of hearing you could think anything wanting." If you didn't read the book this statement is perplexing because Lizzy plays horribly here. However, this isn't the 1st time that Darcy had heard her perform; it was at Lucas Lodge and she played before Mary. Her performance was 1/2 as good but generally preferred because she lacked Mary's vanity. Too bad the scene was omitted in episode 1.

We neither of us perform to strangers.- what does he mean?

He means he has nothing to prove to anyone in public, and is not interested or caring of anyones opinion of him for his attitude.
Thats the silly thing about it, the man again is seen to be weak at the knees and loses all control of himself for this girl, it's the same in all the novels, the man proves to be a blubbering wreck who has lost control giving the woman the emotional edge, its crazy.

Of course.
