  • O uthey hain layke khumo-suboo , arey o Shakeel kahan hai tu , Tera jam layney ko buzm mein koi aur haath badha na dey"Opportunities come in life only once and if we are not quick enough to grab it someone else snatches it away .A true friend doesn't act as a wolf in sheep's clothing,he doesn't deprive his friend of what rightfully is his. .This beautiful ghazal by janab Shakeel Badayuni has been rendered so soulfully by that Queen among Ghazal singers ,the immortal ,inimitable Begum Akhtar!

  • This Ever Green gazal written by Shakeel Badayuni not long before he died, sung by many other singers no one could match Mohtarma Begum Akhtar what an amazing and sweet voice she had which takes one in the world of tranquality. I must praise Khayyam Sahib for enchanting music and composition. "Arey O Shakeel kaham hey tu....Tera jaam lene ko bazam main koi aur haathh badha na dey" Akhatri Bai born in 1914 acted in Hindi films in 30's married in1945 became popular Gazal singer died on 30 Oct,1974

  • 3rd Para

My resolve is so high that I am not afraid of outside flames

Muje Khauf aatishe-gul se hai ye kahin chaman ko jalaa na de

I am afraid of the fire of the flower what if burns down the garden

Wo utthen hain leke khom-o-subuu arey o Shakeel kahaan hai tu

My beloved got up with the wine pitcher and cup, Shakil where are you?

Tera jaam lene ko bazm me koi aur haath barha na de

To grab your cup somebody else may extend the hand

  • This song just speaks for itself.

    soulful!

  • Difficult to decide whether it is poetry of Shkeel or rendition by unbeatable Begum Akhtar where the soul of the song is. I think it is just the perfect combination.

  • To fernando 86ht

Perhaps u r right. Surely u r as far as the comparison u mede with "a seeker's complaint. In this aspect in fact there is no comparison.

  • perfect ghajal

  • Effortless! Such perfection. Begum sahiba.. cant thank you enough. May your soul rest in peace!

  • It sounds more like a Seeker who is complaining about his search to himself or his God before his death,or in tremendous pain.Maybe I am wrong but that's how it sounds to me.So instead of writing back answers or criticizing me,please write what you feels.Maybe someone is right or all are wrong but lets all enjoy thisbeautiful ghazal

  • mujhay dost bun k dughaa na day...!!!

  • aatishe gul

  • Bahut shukriya, TheRampurwala-bhai!

I had been frantically rummaging throughout the Net to find a translation of Shakeel's ghazal, and here you post one for everyone's benefit. God bless you and may poetry live on!

  • out of this world

  • BEAUTIFUL......!!!

  • Part 5

Meri chashm-e-shoq tera bharam, rahe umr bhar yuNhi taaza dam

My eager eye (seeks) your figure, may it remain fresh for life

Na pukar usko ke wo sanam, kahin jal ke jalwa dikha na de

Dont call, for my beloved be annoyed, and show the (beautiful) face (as a punishment).

  • @TheRampurwal

"Jal k jalwa dikhana" symbolizes the beloved as a butterfly. The butterfly loves the fire and shows his love for fire by burning itself in the in the fire it loves.

(First line) says that may my eagerness to see the beloved remains at its height, cause just to see him/her is enough for me. (Second line) but i wont tell him/her about my love so that he/she may not burn himself/herself in the fire fire of love.

  • @oksialkot I am sorry to say that my translation is correct. In the Northern Indian (U.P.) Urdu, "jalna" has several meanings, one of which is "being annoyed." In Urdu ghazals, the lover is always pining for the uncaring beloved. The lover - not the beloved - is likely to burn self like a "parvana". None of that is implied here.

  • @TheRampurwala thanks for nice translation, i am not familair with urdu...so could understand many words or in some cases got words by not the meaning...

  • Part 4

tera jaam lene ko bazm meN koi aur haath baDaa na de

To grab your cup, somebody else may extend the hand./

Two verses missing in the ghazal, as sung, are:

Dar-e-yaar pe badi bheed hai, wohi aashiqoN ka hujoom hai

Theres a big crowd at my beloveds door, its a crowd of lovers/

Abhi neend aayi hai husn ko, koi shor karke jaga na de

My beauty just went to sleep, dont anyone awaken (her)/

  • Part 3

mera azm itana baland hai ke paraaye sholoN kaa Dar nahiN

My resolve is so high, that I am not afraid of outside flames/

mujhe Khauf aatish-e-gul se hai, ye kahiN chaman ko jalaa na de

I am afraid of the fire of the flower, what if burns down the garden/

wo utthe haiN leke khom-o-subuu, arey o Shakeel kahaaN hai tuu

My beloved got up with the (wine) pitcher and cup, Shakil, where are you?/

  • Part 2

mujhe Dar hai ay mere chaaraagar, ye charaaGH tuu hi bujhaa na de

I am afraid, my beloved, that it may be you that extinguishes that light/

mujhe chhoD de mere haal par, tera kyaa bharosaa hai chaaraagar

Let me be in my condition, how can I trust you, my beloved/

ye terii nawaazish-e-muKhtasar, meraa dard aur baDaa na de

This little favour from you, may even increase my heartache/

  • Here's approximate transliteration:

mere ham-nafas, mere ham-navaa, mujhe dost banke daGHaa na de

My co-soul my co-breather, dont betray me after becoming (my) friend/

maiN huuN dard-e-ishq se jaaN_balab, mujhe zindagi ki duaa na de

My soul is at my lips because of love-ache, dont pray for my life/

mere daaGH-e-dil se hai raushani, usi raushani se hai zindagi

The burn on my heart gives light, that light keeps me alive/

  • First time i listened this ghazal on a cross atlantic flight and the effect was so deep i could not stop crying.JUST BEAUTIFUL

  • she's the queen MAY LORD BLESS HER

  • just sit & listen.

  • Been listening to her for years and it has done nothing but benefit my life very deeply. It has made a me a better person with the will power to smile when I hear the good news of others

  • Shakeel Badauuni nay bahut hi khoob ghazal likh~ii. jigar ka lahu naZ^ar aata hay.

  • undoubtedly the best ... kya baat ... kya nazakaat inki awaaz mein bahut khub

  • The voice is thrillingly simple with deeply enchanting melody. I was thrilled and shocked to hear this immortal ghazal by this classical artist. I have added this in my life selection of top melodies.

  • Absolutely enchanting! Another beautiful rendition of this ghazal is by Farida Khanum - in a very slow delivery.

  • The original female voice of ghazals, a true art indeed

  • hi You all......

  • Are you not capable of enjoying such extraordinary music without getting into your racist remarks?

  • 5 starts? this should be Trillion Stars just the voice only!

  • Beautiful poetry and equally beautiful voice of Begum Aktar Ji. Eventhough I left the vatan (country) years ago as a little girl, I will always cherish the great heritage with which my ancestors have blessed me. Sare jahan se accha ye Hindustan hamara! I do not see any chance in near future but God is great.

  • ......amazing ...simply unique

  • marvelous !! I Wish I Was Born In That Era.

  • Loved begum Akhter's style and singing. Its true she is a true legand. She in herself is a school for ghazal singers and listeners. KIYA BAAT HAY - WAH
