He was a great boxer a amazing boxer..if god had to put together the best boxer in history Sugar ray robinson is the closest to that...A Boxer who didnt know how to give up or give in...no matter what he did he stepped up to styles and matched them the same style and beat them from sure hard work and talent Not justy the Best Boxer P4P but the Best in History Nobody will come near him...For A LOng Long Time...
@iTzeXile13 fasho man thanks yeah i do think manny can and will beat floyd if they fight but manny will have to attack floyd how he been attacking his other opponents see floyds a great defensive fighter but mannys punches from all angles will be to much for him he comes with 5 to 6 punches most of the time and 2or 3 will land everytime but then again maybe floyd will find away to win like he always does
In a sport dominated in it's life mostly by Heavyweights, this Welter and Middleweight was named the BEST Athlete of the 20th Century by SI and the best Boxer of all time by Ring Magazine, P4P.
His style was almost invincible. LaMotta only beat him 1 out of 6 bouts, but each was a show of heart only seen in a handful of Boxing Rivalries like Ali-Frazier.
The only problem was after Robinson fought in a philly block & often dropped his left hand. Not really a problem cause he had a great chin.
He held his left low but most film we have is of an already aging Robinson whose reflexes had diminished and who was easier to hit.
No one blames Mayweather or Roy Jones for holding their left low. Robinson got away with it in his prime because of his speed as well as out of his prime because of his granite chin.
Like you said it was mostly when he was older. But still he held the Philly shell block style through his career, mostly it helped him. He used to block or dodge the punches aimed for his left & countered.
Gradually he let his left drift lower when he was older & it shows. 13 of 19 losses were between '60 and '65. Most after 150+ pro fights & over 40 y/o.
But I do hate watching Sugar Ray lose, it sucked. Good thing Monzon came in the mid-60s & beat most of the guys who beat the older Robinson
No doubt he got away with it more than most fighters do, like you said because of his great speed and reflexes, granite chin (& trainers!)
Mayweather and RJJ are more counter-punchers. RJJ can be whatever he wants, I've seen him be a slugger, boxer and everything in between. Sugar Ray obviously countered, but he was more a Boxer.
But anyways Sugar Ray dropping his left didn't seem to matter until much later. I agree.
He was just simply an incredible fighter, in every sense of the word.
No wonder everyone in the know classes him as the best that ever lived. Watch the way he goes to the body just at the right moment...like a master radar detector (fuck knows where that came from)...the guy was a genius. His wide right hook to the body wasn't even just before its time, it's yet to be mastered again. Roy Jones, Ali and Mike McCallum all perfected his leaping left hook. The list goes on. LEGEND. The Bruce Lee of boxing who will ALWAYS BE THE MASTER
In that fight he was going for the lightheavy weight title. He was 157 facing a 175 pound fighter and the temperature was over 100 degrees that during that fight. It was over 110 under the lights in the ring. Sugar Ray had been dancing, firing off combinations why Joey Maxim followed him around the ring trying to get to him. Robinson began to tire from the heat and slipped on the floor when he attempted to throw a punch in the 11th. He passed out on his stool after the 13th from the heat.
thankyou very much for your work

That was Sugar Ray Robinson's only TKO defeat in 202 professional fights. He was comfortably ahead on points at the time of the stoppage.

Part of it was from the Sugar Ray Robinson p4p document, some from various video clips that I have on my computer.
There is more film of prime/near prime Robinson. I'll upload such footage on youtube as soon as possible.
