@Penguinface142 What they don't show is how they get the hermit crabs out of their shells to force into the painted shells. :( Not saying this particular video, but it is said that some will slowly freeze a hermit crab, drill holes into the original shells, heat the shell over flame to make them vacate their shells to take a painted/fancy shell.
Evil people I never make my hermit crabs go into a shell if they don't want to I find my shells at the beach in just put them in the cage and wait that's just wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll post a Viedo of my crabs watch it please
Oh my goodness, those poor things!! WTF is wrong with these people?! I love my hermit crabs, and would never try to force them into those god-awful shells. I usually go to the beach, or stores that sell beach shells, my crabs like those better.
It's especially horrific because these animals were doing just fine in the wild, minding their own business until they were captured and forced out of the shells that they had carefully selected themselves and sold into captivity where most of them die a slow death drying out in mesh cages or dying of other reasons due to unsuitable care and homes.

@dancerocker101 but many do collect shells off of the shores, hence why there is such a shortage of shells in the wild for the hermit crabs to move into. This is why some will move into garbage for protection, bottle cap lids, broken bottle tops, etc.

Most people do not care for hermit crabs as much as they do other popular pets(dogs, cats, ect.), so hermit crabs aren't protected under many laws. @shannonthecat1 You want to do that, but, if you buy the ones in painted shells... you're supporting them. and they will do it more and more. It's painful but for them it's buisness where to us, we see their lives. But sometimes, you need to walk away for the sake of future hermit crabs. try to buy them in normal shells if possible, to support those guys (the ones treating them right!!)
when i got my hermit crabs, there were none in the habitat with painted shells... there was the option of buying the shells with no crab but there was only a few
I have2hermit crabs. One that I had died of VERY old age. It had a painted shell. But it was not foruced. He had changed into it. So I got the dead one out of its shel and had a burial. And I bought another one. It had a natural shell. It changed into the painted shell. So not all hermits that have painted shells are fourced into them.
While it is true that this is horrid, some hermit crabs DO like painted shells. I always give my crabs a choice of painted or normal, and some times they choose the painted. It's like buying an apartment. You take the one that appeals to you most.
I feel bad that this is how they have to make money.. Everyone keeps saying it's so wrong, but that's just how they're making money to live.. I feel bad for the hermit crabs and stuff too, but they probably don't have a choice..
@maddnats, you might need to educate yourself a little more as well :/ you're on the right track, no they shouldn't use airbrush because they might accidentally paint the inside, but the toxins in the paint are also very bad for the hermit crab as are paint chips when they fall off.
I think its horable because they are most likly usin the wrong paints I mean airbrush really? you cant tell me that doesnt get into the inside of the shell and then to paint them so thick yeah that's not right at all.. People erk me at not educatin them selves. the inside and around the opening should have no paint there.......Iam disgusted:(
Okay guys if yall have EMPTY painted shells there are ways you can remove the paint. The best way that I know of is to boil the shells in water for awhile. The longer the better. and the paint should be easy to chip off in big chunks. Then the shell should be safe for the crab again.

I bought colored shells for my hermit crabs so they have five other sized shells to move into My hermies were bought in their natural shells But after molting twice my three crabs moved into my colored shells. So I have three crabs and fifteen different shells

I keep my hermit crabs in natural shells. My hermies don't even like the painted shells. By the way if you don't know where to buy natural shells, next time you go to the beach go to one of the gift shops and you can buy them there. It's great if you live near the beach.
I honestly dont like the look of the painted shells at all. the only ones for sale that I can find have painted shells though, but I'm going to put only natural shells in their cage and discard any painted one's they change out of. are the mother of pearl shells natural? This video is actually mild compared to how they literally have the hermit crabs leave their shells to be forced into the painted/decorated ones. I have2hermit crabs. One that I had died of VERY old age. It had a painted shell. But it was not foruced. He had changed into it. So I got the dead one out of its shel and had a burial. And I bought another one. It had a natural shell. It changed into the painted shell. So not all hermits that have painted shells are fourced into them.

While it is true that this is horrid, some hermit crabs DO like painted shells. I always give my crabs a choice of painted or normal, and some times they choose the painted. It's like buying an apartment. You take the one that appeals to you most.

@maddnats, you might need to educate yourself a little more as well :/ you're on the right track, no they shouldn't use airbrush because they might accidentally paint the inside, but the toxins in the paint are also very bad for the hermit crab as are paint chips when they fall off.

The painted shells are pretty, but so are normal shells! Just find some nice shells and let the crabs move in on their own.

I think its horable because they are most likly usin the wrong paints I mean airbrush really? you cant tell me that doesnt get into the inside of the shell and then to paint them so thick yeah that's not right at all.. People erk me at not educatin them selves. the inside and around the opening should have no paint there.......Iam disgusted:(

Okay guys if yall have EMPTY painted shells there are ways you can remove the paint. The best way that I know of is to boil the shells in water for awhile. The longer the better. and the paint should be easy to chip off in big chunks. Then the shell should be safe for the crab again.

I bought colored shells for my hermit crabs so they have five other sized shells to move into My hermies were bought in their natural shells But after molting twice my three crabs moved into my colored shells. So I have three crabs and fifteen different shells

I keep my hermit crabs in natural shells. My hermies don't even like the painted shells. By the way if you don't know where to buy natural shells, next time you go to the beach go to one of the gift shops and you can buy them there. It's great if you live near the beach.

I honestly dont like the look of the painted shells at all. the only ones for sale that I can find have painted shells though, but I'm going to put only natural shells in their cage and discard any painted one's they change out of. are the mother of pearl shells natural? I like the look of them, but if they aren't then I'm not getting any.

I love hermit crabs adn I have 4. I have one thing to say to those people, that I hate them very much. I always by hermit crabs with natural shells, not painted ones. Painted ones can have paint chip off and hermit may eat it and die! :( Petsores usually sell hermit crabs with natural shells.

@MarioandPit5454 Only because majority of people do not know what is done to put the hermit crabs within the painted shells. This video is actually mild compared to how they literally have the hermit crabs leave their shells to be forced into the painted/decorated ones. It is not that they actually LIKE the video, as much as they find it educational as to how the hermit crab ends up in the painted shells.
