I concur, there's a high risk of this gorgeous film being massacred by being Americanized, case-in-point being Shutter alone, one amongst many Americanised disasters. However, after seeing Watchmen, I was given a spark of hope that a live action film of Akira could none the less at least look impressive. Here's to hoping the story stays in tact.
