The original one is a fake...if it would be hydrogen gas burning, you'd need to have something on top of the glass to stop it from escaping, so it wasn't hydrogen burning. Also we all know water itself doesn't burn just like that :). However ethanol, for example does burn and so do mixtures of ethanol and water (if there is enough ethanol) so there just might be a mixture of ethanol and water burning in the glass

The whole point of putting batteries in the water is so that electrolysis can occur. This produces hydrogen and oxygen, which are both flammable gases. However, you failed to conceive the fact that the water itself doesn't burn. The gases near the water, or the stuff in the water burns. The reason water can APPEAR to be buring is because the alkaline from the battery leaks out.

The alkaline itself can dissolve in water, but when this happens, it produces hydrogen ions, which cannot be dissolved in water. Having a lesser density than water, it floats to the surface, where it can then be burned.

This, anyways, is my theory. It might be correct, it might not. I'm fairly confident in this, though.
