For anyone wondering why this song is called "Train in Vain"... Viv Albertine (Mick's ex-girlfriend, who this song is about) said in an interview: "He used to get the train to my place in Shepherds Bush and I would not let him in. He was bleating on the doorstep."

So Mick took the long train ride only to be turned away, thus he took the "train in vain." Mystery solved! :)
