Question to the Knowledgeable: I was watching Hmong Frog and Tiger cartoon with my daughter last night and noticed a lot of grammatical errors and some curiosities. Regarding Hmong adjectives for the word "qeej" (lusheng), I always thought you would say "lub qeej". However, Mr. Frog kept saying "rab qeej". I thought "rab" is used for objects with handles only? So which is correct?
LOL... probably not the forum for this, but figured I'd ask.
lol my mom said that she can not under stand wat the r trying to say ..... they r jus play and not tell us any thing hahaha btw its light flute not old
Why is it that for the Hmong in the US women are not allow to play the qeej, but these Miao/Hmong women are playing it. This is very interesting. Thank you, niamtxiv, for posting all these videos up. They are all pieces of the puzzle to better understand Hmong origin.
Yes, thank you for watching. Our women in China help preserve our wonderful traditions of Qeej playing. It's great to see our women performing syncronized qeej dances.
it's not that women are not allow to play qeej. It's about whether they're willing to learn to play. I've seen women that play qeej here in the us but very few of them.
You are right, to say women are not allow to may not be completely correct, but they certainly are not encourage to. The men in my family perform qeej ritual and from what I've learned the underlying message is women can play, but their service will not be use because it is not "appropriate".
It was in the past that women were not encourage to. Now men and women are encouraged to learn it. They even have schools that teach young girls and guys how to play qeej. I've seen a 16-year old girl performed qeej at a funeral and it was a big surprise. But I don't understand why they teach them qeej and stuff like that. I mean we need education that we can use to compete with others in this country.
the one to say it's not appropriate is only from the men's mouth. don't we all get that? it's a way for them to discourage us from perfection...women doe things way better than men. don't let that get in your way.
@maibrv Actually there is no real restrictions on why they can't play, the women just get roughly criticized, so out of embarrassment they don't play. Another example that might come up is women riding horses. here in the US, we don't see this as a problem, but for some abroad its just wierd. Sry if i dont make any sense and plz correct me if im wrong.

@jephboy
"Rab" is use when referring to something that you hold.
"Lub" is use when the object has a round shape, hollow...
It's Rab Qeej.

Ha! That logic makes sense. Good to know.
