Carl Sagan - one of the genius's that once walked the earth - He understood "us" and devoted his life to what he knew was the right thing to do - a hero to all mankind
I watch this video every few weeks now, whenever I start to lose faith in people and faith in the world. Something about it just struck me, and in the best ways. I've shown this video to so many people now-- usually after a long disagreement or debate.
Every person always thanks me for sharing it, as if my capacity to Google makes me the initiating point--so I guess I'll go to the source.
Thank you for this, it's impacted me and many people in ways that I never expected--a fit tribute indeed
That's the "unknown rebel" from the Tienanmen Square Protests in China in the late 80's. He was a 19 year old college student fighting for democratic reform over the current communist regime.
LOL a scene from Twilight at :30? Wooooow...but this was a very profound video. I sometimes think about that stuff. It really forces us to take perspective
By the end of his term, 138 Reagan administration officials had been convicted, had been indicted, or had been the subject of official investigations for official misconduct and/or criminal violations. In terms of number of officials involved, the record of his administration was the worst ever. That's the only reason I put him there, not really a personal bias. Perhaps Nixon would have been more recognizable?
The realization that the differences we see between us are utterly petty in comparison to the vast expanse that is the universe. To quote Sagan again, "It underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another." This viewpoint is not a moral "step backward" from religion, but instead, a beautiful reality which reminds us of what's really important in our obscure position. To use our short time here wisely. Love, learn, explore, and cherish. Why would anyone waste their time on hate?
I agree with that viewpoint for the most part. Why would anyone waste their time on hate? It could be that they are mentally imbalance or want somthing unearned. Justice is the reality where you reward the good for being good and punished the evil for being evil. Our main purpose in life is our own rational happness.
I'd have to argue that, naturally, our main purpose in life is to reproduce. Our ambitions towards wealth, power, friendship, love, and everything else that makes us "happy" stem from our predisposed desire to create successful offspring.
And thank you for saying "rational" happiness. Ignorance can be bliss for an individual but it is a serious danger to society as a whole.
No, with all due respect. Their are people that don't want to reproduce and shouldn't. The difference between man and animal is people live on the conceptual level while animals live on the preceptual level which means that they survive by instint. Rational individual which means we are capabale of makeing long turn goals and do things that make us happy including making a family if that is what we chose to do.
Also with due respect, the differences you're speaking of are completely petty. The things that make us happy are the same things that make them happy, and it makes sense that it would, for the same subconscious goal is being striven for. Natural selection rewards those of us who obey our BASIC INSTICTS towards social behavior, parenting, kindness, greed, ect. with sex and successful offspring to carry on our genetic lineage. Recent technology has complicated this process a small amount but....
....we still carry these same basic instincts that shaped us into the species that has become so temporarily successful, the species we are today. Our deepest rooted desire is survival. Sex is the tool of survival and the rest of our behavior has been molded for its purpose just as every other species on this planet. We may be conscious of it, but that too we owe to it. This consciousness has only slightly dulled its power and it remains to be seen if we can do much more than that.
Now how can the same things that make them happy makes us happy? All though all of the things that you say is true on a sub-conscious level about a lower species. But we humans have a higher level of conscious which means that we can differentate as well is intragrate and that is the key. We are the only known on this plant that can think on a business level. I respect your thinking and views.
Nothing whatsoever. Projecting said beliefs in a book written for impressionable teens...that could be argued. I won't though. I was just explaining that the difference between their outlook on things and somebody else's might be different because of their base beliefs
I see somebody's had a vampire induced broken heart in the past :P
I actually never got any farther than the first book...mostly in fear that my man parts would fall off. And Stephanie Meyers is Mormon. Her idea of love is a reflection of her beliefs.
yeah, i had a little self debate on that one. I just felt like the astronomy bit might pull some people out of it. People tend to have very short attention spans, haha.

The band Story of the Year has a track titled 'Pale Blue Dot' on their newest album, The Black Swan, and it has Carl Sagan narrating this :)

Not a huge fan of their music but they just gained a lot more of my respect.

I love that they have it on the album. Hearing Carl Sagan speak really makes you think about a lot of things. Very inspiring.

good "intriguing"?
Because "intriguing" can be bad. For example, at the time, I found Sarah Palin's nomination quite "intriguing".

why was Ronald Reagan shown in a clip when Carl Sagan narated the words "corrupt politician" ?
just curious about your opinion.
