  • I think that's Deroche, BC...

If it's an eastbound on the CP side.

Thanks to all who support our national passenger railway!

  • @jfsa380 Via promotes & operates the 'Canadian' more as a first class, cross-Canada tourism train than as a train to get you from point A to point B quickly. The power assigned to the train is more than sufficient to meet its' operating schedule.

  • Epic!

  • Those are beautiful passenger cars!

Too bad the locos don't match up in beauty. Any F-unit diesel would look much better.

  • very nice.

  • wow thats a long train!

  • @TheJediguy123 You should see the length of their commercial trains!

  • Great video, great quality!!

  • lovely horn :)

  • Too bad the clip faded out on the last car passing. That end car's design is a work of art.

  • I could hear trains miles away pretty loud.

  • If you're in a hurry, you take a damn plane. If you love looking at scenery and not the air, trains rank Number 1!!!!!!!!!

  • I <3 trains !!! fk airplanes :3

  • One day I have to go to Canada to ride one of those trains they look simply epic.

  • 5*****!

  • I love the way the train horn echoes thru the mountains...reminds me of my vacations in BC and walking along the Fraser River in Yale where a CP Rail train goes by about every 1/2 hour with horn blaring and echoes for seconds thru Fraser River canyon.

  • damn its like watchin the old California Zephyr passing I love rideing on the VIA Rail Canadian one of my favorite VIA trains

  • Scary horn!

  • Wow, I thought the days of the Canadian having a 21-car consist were long gone! Always loved those Park cars. Got to ride one again a few years ago on the night train from Toronto to Montreal with my wife. Bottle of red wine, front seat, watching the moon shine off the stainless steel from an empty dome...magical! Good times...

  • that is trully an awsome site last time I rode it I wachched the signals change in front of us and like you watched the Canadian moon on the train I also saw a trully spectcular Canadian sunset and than a clear Canadian night as we pulled into Saskatoon

  • Via has up to 28 cars reguarly throughout the summers

  • I love the final long blast of the crossing signal. I'm guessing that when the engineer noticed the foamer taking his picture he gave him a little extra on the horn --" Hi, there!!"

    Great video. Great train.

  • Awesome video! I would love to ride this train. Maybe someday. It's so expensive though. My dad would like to do it but we wouldn't do the entire trip probably. We could also do the Skeena but I don't know if it is as scenic. love the horn on the VIA F40s too. Do you know what it's called? The F40s are some of my favorite engines. Too bad Amtrak retired them but the commuter railroad through my town still runs with them.

  • Thank you! Yes, the "Canadian" as this train is called would be the most scenic of the 2 trips. It travels between Vancouver and Toronto so it allows you to see a large portion of the country (including the Rockies of course). The horn you hear is simply the "standard" Airchime K3L that's found on most locomotives in Canada. Speaking of F40's, the Amtrak Cascades uses an "F40", albeit it's just a hollow cabcar now, but it's still nice to see it leading an Amtrak train now and then!

  • Thank you for the info.

  • For the pricing, VIA offers a constant "sale" that they rarely advertise. If you visit their website, and look up the express deals, you can get 50-75% off the regular ticket cost almost always. I know a lot of people who've taken advantage of that, and saved a ton of cash.

  • cool.

  • I live in Ireland and this is something i'd really love to do. Travel on these big trains across Canada. Wow... superb stuff!

  • Thanks! There's a seat for you on it, when are you coming? haha

  • And I've always wanted to see Ireland! I hope you do get to come visit us in Canada some day just as I hope to visit your country eventually.

I have journeyed on "The Canadian" a couple of times and the ride is still breathtaking even as an adult. It is a pity the train doesn't go through Banff anymore though.

  • Woah! Thats one big train!

  • Beautiful photography!

  • Thank you!

  • Sweet! I've come down that hill on my bike as a train was approaching.

  • haha nice! I guess I couldn't hide the location that easily :P

  • great vid, the only thing is this train SHOULD be going to Calgary through Banff. Because of those asshole Rocky Mountaineer exec's, who are SO in bed with politicians like Gord Campbell, amongst others, it is VERY hard for Via to get ANY bit close to returning to its "proper" routing !!

  • sigh.. maybe some day

  • Back in the day we were so spoilt having both the southern CP "Canadian" route, and the northern CN "Super Continental" route. I loved both, but I have special memories of the old Super Continental service, that was my first trans-continental rail journey when I was a little kid, riding with my mom all the way from Halifax to Vancouver. Good times, those were definitely the days :)

  • Aw, cut it out with the recollections, boi! I was kid in the days of two passenger trains (actually dishwashed my way to Winnipeg and back on CN once -not recommended) and never got to enjoy my longed-for cross country rail trip. Now I just can't afford it! You're making me envious... 8-(....

  • Well if it's any consolation I can't afford it these days either. Flying over Canada in a jet isn't the same at all though is it?. The irony is that when my mom and I journeyed across Canada and back it was cheaper to take the train, even with a bedroom, than it was to fly. Rail travel is much "greener" than air travel, and so much more scenic. What has happened to our priorities? I hope that you do have the chance to take that trans-continental rail trip some day, as I hope do do again myself.

  • Our priorities surround speed and hurrying, I think!

It's a long time since getting there was half the fun. You can still take a cruise ship, I guess, but they don't really even go from point A to point B anymore.

I toured a few cars of the reconditioned Canadian some years ago - they were on display at the Vancouver station - and they were just gorgeous! I knew then what I'd do the first summer after I won the 6/49!

  • i live close by, what part of agassiz are you in?

    street name?

  • cool! no sorry I'm not from Agassiz :P

  • THAT'S a passenger train! Sure beats what I have seen here in the US.

  • haha ya? I guess it's like the by-gone days for you guys with the stainless steel, park car, and all!

  • You got that right. We have 'Amtrak' passenger trains, which have completely (or nearly) removed all F40's and replaced them with P42's (Genesis). Bi-Level coaches and P42's are the only thing I see much anymore. The remain F40's Amtrak has here NPUs. Some have been simply weighted down and have a working cab, or are used as baggage cars with working cabs. You are very luck VIA keeps with the best!

  • Haha yes thanks! Yes as you say, there are a few F40's kicking around as cab cars. I've seen the Amtrak Cascades F40 passby now and then which is a nice change of pace.

  • On the other hand, I would love to have the flexibility of the passenger train network that Amtrak offers. Next summer I'm taking a month off, getting an Amtrak pass, and going to try and ride them all :) It'll be my personal one lap of America by rail.

  • As a Canadian, I certainly like our trains. The Via Canadian however is unlike any train adventure in the world. I took this trip in 1995, and while it wasn't cheap, it was unforgettable. Some may recommend taking the train from the rockies to Vancouver, but I think you have to find a way to do the entire trip. It's amazing how the train winds as much going through the Canadian shield as it does through the mountains. Come on up and take it sometime. You won't regret it.

  • I can only imagine! - for now ;)

  • Awesome video! I love how those engines are smokin' and workin'.

  • thanks! oh ya workin hard

  • Are they climbing a grade? It looks like it but it's hard to tell.

  • Ya I'm not sure actually. They usually have to keep those F40's going full notch 8 to keep it moving at a good speed.

  • I love you for posting these.

  • you're welcome

  • love that horn! nice catch!

  • thanks!

  • wow! once again you continue to amaze me

  • thanks again! :D

  • OMG that was an incredible K5LA if my ears do not decieve me,LoL....Great Video,5 Stars,Very Cool!!!!!;-)

    Bryan

  • Thanks Bryan!! :D it's actually a K3L going by really fast :P

  • Awesome train vid. LOVE the horn. Spectacular!!

  • thanks!

  • Awesome!

  • thanks!

  • Classic Sliver and blue! Nice Catch!

  • thanks! just wish the lighting had been better

  • Thing is, the lighting is just great! It casts some nice shadows on the stainless...almost looks like liquid silver. :P

  • haha nice! thanks!

liquid silver huh!? hmmm how much is that worth these days? :P
