Don't worry about it spilling cuz it won't as long as you keep moving the brush. I hav
I think you have the worst technique iv'e ever seen totally over the top, what a waste of shaving soap, there's no need for all that wasted time, prep is good but just wasting peoples time is not.
Thanks man. New to this and been ending up with watery suds rather than lather. Your vid showed me what I was doing wrong (too much water and way too little soap) and now I have a bowl of lovely thick slick lather.
I have considered filming an update to this video, as it should really only take 2-3 minutes to build an effective lather. Explaining how to do something on video adds quite a bit of time to the process.
By the way, I wake up at 6am everyday, and report to work at 8am. I work a standard 40 hour week just like everyone else. Making unfounded assumptions makes you look like an idiot.
You need to chill out. He appears to be using a boar, or a synthetic brush, neither of which can whip up lather the speed that a good badger hair brush can. Just thought I'd enlighten you on these facts that easily surpass the understanding of the feeble-minded.
Thank you so much! I've gone back to using a straight razor, and I just got a soap and brush kit. I was doing it completely wrong, getting thin, watery lather with no body. I appreciate you making this video, and now I know how to get that lovely lather like I get at the barber shop. There's nothing better than a clean shave with a straight razor, except for one with no nicks! Thanks again. :-)
@michiganlover Nice! I started on the Parker shavette, and just got a Townsend Special 11/16 full hollow square point. I nick myself way less with the real straight than with the shavette. I love it! :)
If you are using a Melt and Pour soap (often called a glycerin based soap) like Van Der Hagen Deluxe, you can cut the soap into small pieces, place it in the bowl you want to use, and give it short 10 second bursts in the microwave until melted.
It will take the shape of the container as it cools (which will take about 45 minutes). Cutting it into pieces helps prevent it from burning.
If you are feeling adventurous, you can re-scent it at the same time.
Re-scenting VDH Deluxe with some Old Spice Aftershave seems the most popular choice. Simply give it 3-5 good shakes of aftershave while it is in the melted state.
Since the original smell of VDH is quite mild, it is easily overtaken with the Old Spice scent.
thanks for the video, I've been shaving for a decade, but just switched to a safety razor and eventually hope to switch to a straight, this was very helpful.
Hey thanks alot! I use a boar brush and shave soap and have been getting a really weak, watery lather. This looks like it will work great. I'll try it when i shave tomorrow.
Thanks for posting this! I've been getting really weak lather and wanted to figure out what the heck I've been doing wrong; I do believe it's been cleared up.
Good work, want to let you know there are those of us out there which appreciate which to the masses appears to be a boring video. Btw congratulations on your fitness improvements (noticed on your profile) if your mind is open check out Aajonus Vonderplanitz and his work (interesting even if you 100% disagree with it) and Rick Simpsons Hemp Oil with regards to cancer etc.
Thanks for this, took you a long time to build the lather but I'm sure it's worth it...:) Might stick to shaving cream for the time being though. How long does a normal sized block of soap last you?
The lather making process would normally only take about 3 minutes. The time is greatly increased when filming it, as I have to slow down the process to explain it.
A normal sized block of shaving soap would typically last several months. Several factors determine how long it will last, including composition of the soap (tallow based vs. glycerin based), and the hardness of your water.

why do you always put your fingers on the bristles of the brush?
you mention this about 4 times throughout the video.
i was just wondering if that was for a specific purpose, or if its just something you like to do...

Cmon only 2 minutes and 30 seconds of spinning the brush to get lather? Gosh that took or fucking ever

Congrats on using the straight razor!! I have taken up straight shaving myself the last few months, and there certainly is a learning curve.
I have a Boker King Cutter 5/8 round point, a Parker Shavette that uses 1/2 DE blades, and a Feather Artist Club.
I also have a Dovo Stainless Shavette, and a 5/8 Razolution straight razor with granite looking scales on the way. WOOT!!

annoying, thanks anyway

I have learned a lot since making this video, and the entire process would take about 3 minutes now.
In this video I spend a lot of time swirling around lather that is too dry, which doesn't accomplish a whole lot.
The time is also increased, when you need to explain the steps for the video.

VDH Deluxe, and a Omega Boar brush will give many great shaves. I am shaving all week with this combination, and have been getting superb shaves.
