  • The "citrus massage" what a great line.

  • Made it, Ma! Top of the world!

  • I am watching Angels With Dirty Faces but just took some time out to see whats about on this great man and actor. Thank you for posting this fantastic video, it had me laughing at such a great person Mr Cagney was. A very fine actor from a time of great actors.

  • Legend!!!!

  • Not to be mean but it sounds like he didn't have much education. When you look at his blood and guts movies, the word talent doesn't come to my mind. But above all of them was Yankee Doodle. The most excellent. :) Songs

  • @elvi1961 He had more class in his pinky, than the sum total of 90% of the stars of today.

  • 1:23 Steve and Ali

  • Watching the incomparable Jimmy Cagney (and seeing the greats in the audience) reaffirms my stance that the actors today are crap (except a small few like DeNiro and Pacino).

  • He made it, top of the world !

  • I love Jim. He was so sincere in his speech, all class.

The one who disliked this is a dirty rat.

  • our country has lost it's class. But we still have great people like this.

  • What sort of person puts a dislike to this?

He was the Boss. and God bless him.

  • There will never again be such a gathering of outstanding talented actors and actresses in one place, whose talents last through the decades on either film or tv.

  • classy guy....

  • One of the greatests...may he rest in peace

  • James Cagney's been my favorite since I gratefully discovered him aged 16. -- Yes,, pure class and truth. -- Honor, power, love and caring for the Earth forever, "Faraway Fella," -- Virginia Hammer and Midlantic Theatre Co., Newark

  • James Cagney: an absolute LEGEND!!!! I've loved him for years. God rest his soul.

  • ahkateckcha

  • Can someone transcripts here what he say? To our better understanding, thank you.

  • All I can say is thank you for this post. What great and wonderful memories.

  • This is what we as a nation have lost: class. We had plenty of it. It's amazing to see in this video Republicans being best friends with Democrats. That's no longer part of our culture. We've become a very ugly nation. Cagney was a Democrat and "Chuck" Heston, the "Duke", Sinatra, Reagan, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart and other Republicans were friends of his. Cagney's "gutter" shtick notwithstanding, he was an alumnus of my Alma Mater, Columbia born and bred in the then very genteel Upper East Side.

  • @viriatoist Well said. Yet, perhaps, it is not "lost" but is among the custodians, who should not be too proud nor too disdainful to steer, even a few degrees, what has become the oxymoron of American culture to the track of its glorious past.

  • Very gracious and powerful speech-A man who knew what he was and was proud of it....the part at 7:35 where he speaks of his family and says "Gotta Hang on, Boy " you know he was near the edge of breaking down - Wow.

  • Made it Ma! Top of the World!!

  • Congrats on the award James. I love you :-) You were such a great actor.

  • great actor, great man.....miss you jimmy

  • wonderful wonderful actor , thanks for uploading

  • Greatest actor of all time, isn't and never will be one like Cagney.

by the way he never said "ummm you dirty rat".

  • Actors from Mr. Cagney's era had so much class. They knew how to say it all without saying too much.

  • at 1:23

Ronald Reagan, Ali McGraw, and Adventure GI Joe (with Life-Like Hair) Steve McQueen all in a single camera frame!!

  • There will never be another cagney...Mr. Cagney was such a talented actor, and I adore all of his work in film....ummm you dirty rat...i love james cagney....................RACHELVIS-TCB

  • He's being completely sincere at the end when running through the list of names and half the audience are laughing like jackasses; anyone else notice this? It's obvious to me that he did.

  • @7EMERSON9

Thank you for singling this out. I'm sure many got that. Genuineness never goes unnoticed -- especially by those who are genuine themselves.

  • @7EMERSON9 Just watched it. I think you saw something that no one else did. =0)

  • They just don't make em like Cagney anymore.

Him, Jimmy Stewart,John Wayne, Clark Gable, etc.

All class acts that no longer exist in modern times.

So sad because we need to grow people like this again it this country.

  • @NWsubmom They're actors, not saints. Get a grip, person. Also, two of them are reactionaries, and the world does not need more of them. But great actors, no doubt!

  • @NWsubmom Nyeah see you forgot Edward G. Robinson nyeah.

  • @NWsubmom clint eastwood

  • James Cagney's appreciation of art is enlightening - and when he mentions his friends from his youth he was being very sincere and ignored the jocularity from the audience.

  • What I find interesting is that most most of the people in the crowd have passed on.

    :-/

  • When Jimmy Cagney is on the screen you can't take your eyes off of him. You listen to every word. To hear John Wayne simply, sincerely praise him. Americans were once not so soft. That's the guy we all poured into the theatre to see once more in Ragtime.

He has a book Cagney by Cagney. I love the man.

    Talented, clever and gracious.

  • There's some heavy hitters in there, but the heaviest of them all is giving a speech.

  • What a gracious and elegant man he was!

  • A \n NDP ad? Are you fucking kidding me?!!! Die Jack Layton!

  • Ronald Reagan :)

  • THE man period.

  • A man who understands people. Acknowledges all the circumstances & people who shaped him & made his life & career what it was. Genuinely defers to the behind the scenes crew who help actors look good, & who are rarely given a mention. Incredibly multi talented, yet sincerely humble & even dismissive of his gifts, yet full of praise & respect for others. Full of self deprecating humour too. This, ladies & gentlemen, is not just a great actor, but a fine human being. A noble life well lived. RIP.

  • They don`t make `em like this anymore.....

  • i can think of only a handfull of films and actors in my opinion , in the last forty years that are great actors and films , but here we see the master , myself and my children watch theese actors and in black and white , can you believe , brilliant and with t manners ...................

  • I only need 2 words to describe James Cagney THE GREATEST

  • God Bless Ol' Jimmy Cagney.

  • he was a giant.

  • Long Live James Cagney. Truly one of the all time greats.

  • A star who never forgot his roots. A gentleman, and an unpretentious actor, a rarity indeed. How to thank the many influences, and friends, without it sounding boring.

  • I grow up watching many of his films, my mothers favourite, may fathers favourite and my favourite. Entertaining to the end.

  • the very very best

  • An American Icon a true pioneer!! I Cant Forget Marlon Brando Though!!

  • how many stars would name their friends by name from their youth has the're ultimate inspiration, what a guy.

  • Greatest actor of all time and a possible relative!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cagney is really a funny guy. He can tell a joke as good as any comic. He was a great actor, dancer and singer. There will never be another James Cagney.

  • One of a kind, we will not see the likes of him again. God bless him!

  • to all these actors like you james Cagney come back to us we need you !! they don't make actors like you anymore......

  • Made it, Ma — top of the world!

  • They sure don't make them like that anymore!

  • An amazing actor, and incredibly funny, too.

  • My favourite "Dandy." Great to see this today!

  • Cagney amazes me. He turns One Foot Half in the grave awards into the complete opposite, he created life through words here.

For that, I too look at life in an artistic way.

  • A Class Act....All the way. Simple and Sincere. Thanks James for the memories.

  • at 33 seconds the woman next to bob hope is brice taylor, the one who said she was bob hopes sex slave !!!...i never believed it till ....there she is standing there !!!!

  • A multi-faceted man with a great sense of humor.

RIP, Sir....you were one of a kind

  • Thank you so much for posting this. James Cagney was the best!

  • A magic night for the greatest actor. My favorite movies:

Angels with dirty faces-Each dawn i die-White heat and One two three

  • my favorite movie with him was Mister Roberts.

  • rob mcnee truly the best a great americanof irish origin.a true yankee doodle dandy

  • the greatest screen actor that ever lived

    god bless you jimmy cagney.

  • This AFI award, as well as the Kennedy Center Honors, are the best award shows on TV thanks to George Stevens.

  • This was back when these award ceremonies meant something. Nowadays these ceremonies are just a bullshit gathering of the assholes that make up hollywood today.

  • It makes me so happy to see all the old faces....

  • pure class!

  • i am from Brazil in south America and i love this video this is art...

  • @free1kaplan I value your opinion about this video, now if you were from venezuela in south america it would be a different story understandably...

  • @fleischpudding

what do you mean i don't understand i am from Brazil in south America.,..

James Cagney was a great actor... tough guy!!!

  • Oh God to have been in that room, Cagney, Wayne, Sinatra, Hope, Kaye - true men, true heroes and so much talent, no one today comes close.

  • I was 13 when this was broadcast; I just saw it for the second time, at age 49, and yet I remember so much of his speech. What a wonderful actor and man.

  • THey don't make them like this anymore

  • CLASS!!

  • Always was a big fan of Cagney. Class, style, great dancer and actor. I miss him. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" is a classic.

  • when I get old, I want to be just like him.

  • @HuasoPodrido :-)

  • lol, John Wayne in his wig

  • The greatest. Could play a tough guy as well as anyone ever, great song and dance man, great at being the nice guy, great at being either the common man or the heroic figure, or anything in between.

  • @cinzsweet :-)

  • I have his autograph from when he lived at his FARM...

  • James Cagney wasnt a man,,,,he was more than that

  • @coocher2009 :-)

  • Boy I love this guy...

  • Was that a commerical break?, Or an edit ????? At 1:54

  • I loved Jimmy Cagney and Virginia Mayo in White Heat.

Sorry if I ask some off-topic questions:

I was wondering if you had the Salute to John Ford and can post it?

Also do you have anything with Danny Kaye? Thanks.

  • These were STARS and deserved everything they made not like the "entertainers" of today. They didnt talk down to their audiences. They respected the art.

  • Fantastic speech.

  • The great Cagney, one of a kind!

  • One of my favorite gangsters of all time how we miss him

John Wayne of the best western stars ever. Dearly missed

Frank Gorshin imo the best Riddler and doing impressions especially Burt Lancaster

  • You just have to love Cagney.

  • My impression of an acceptance speech from today’s Hollywood = "It's about time Bit#*$ I'm the greatest actor who ever lived and I did all on my own. Now gimme’ my gift basket." Ah for a bygone era.

  • L-O-V-E this...thank you:D

  • Cagney once said he caught bogart picking his nose in the back of a limo lol

  • @TitaniumByFire Ya know...There's a difference between pickin' and diggin’ for gold. One time I'm not kiddin', I saw a bombshell pick and eat. I was so sad. It brought a tear to my eye and a knot to my stomach. It just goes to prove the old adage "Ya can't judge a book by its cover" “ Or in her case a booger by its color. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.

  • @TitaniumByFire He was probably pulling out some nose hair like the tough guy he was..I know he butted heads w/Bogey at least once but he should have mentioned him. They played off each other well..

  • A tremendous talent and a dyed in the wool NYer. What a silverscreen legend he was.

  • Thats my Cagney!! RIP!

  • CLASS!!!!

  • the greatest actor that ever lived, R.I.P jimmy....

  • What happened to stars and other public figures being so well-spoken and graciousness? When did articulation become unfashionable or undesirable?

  • @pfrocchi For the same reason that four separate heads of state around the globe announced the following in the last two weeks: multiculturalism failed; it does not work. We now pay the price for this unwarranted and tragic idea that emanated from the '60s. As soon as we stop graduating children from one grade to another who cannot read, write, or speak intelligently, or stop teaching socialism and nursing adults in college, we may have a chance of returning to the greatness America once was.

  • @pfrocchi About the same time as saying "please" and thank you" became undesirable along with just plain old being nice!

  • Well, Cagney was not only a great hoofer, but a humanist, as well.

  • I wonder how Jimmy knew Specs Toporcer? Specs played MLB for the St. Louis Cardinals, back in the 20's. Perhaps they were from the same neighborhood? Regardless, James Cagney was....is one of the greatest actors to have ever been on the Silver Screen.

  • @kyokogodai - They grew up together and were in the same street gang as kids.....He has some great stories in his autobiography. Cagney was and always will be the greatest actor that ever lived on the silver screen.

  • @chinotorano I am going to have to find that. That is so interesting to know! Thanks!!! :)

  • He always reminded me of a sexy Pussy Cat!

  • @TyroneJJ7 I like that!

  • he's the frick'n MAN yeah!

  • thanks so much for posting what a great speach from a great actor truly missed would love to have had a beer and a chat with him

  • I've always liked Jimmy Cagney. He's got more spunk than a Blue Whale, an amazingly engaging actor, doesn't take things too seriously, strong work ethic, and a fab sense of humour. A real and great personality. I only wish I could have met him.

  • @vladdegs I very much enjoyed this posting and your comment as well. Cagney was in a class by himself - outstanding gentleman all around. If you have not read his autobiography and the follow up biography, I highly recommend them. The man was a class act all the way around.

  • whata ya here whata ya say

  • There will never be another like him!!

  • Magic fella !

  • Wow.....pure class, and such a legend!

    Thanks for sharing this!!

  • These are the things that make YouTube so great. To see these things repeated about actors that people were raised with makes it great to revisit them sometimes.

This is the America that is long gone.

  • @IngloriusBastard11 So true and at the same time so sad that America will ever be like again. I fear it will continue to get more lost then what it is now.

  • James Cagney was sthe single most talented actor in Hollywood. He could sing, dance, fight like a man and die like a hero. Few are the names whose preceding reputation is such that the mere mention of his name opens your eyes, wakes you up and kicks in your adrenalin. Cagney was like a strong cup of coffee spiked with Irish whiskey. Here's to ya!

  • Was that really him?!?!

    Thank u 4 posting this.

"We're not worthy, we're not worthy..."

  • Wowl!!!! what a wonderful guy, Ive always been a fan!! those that knew him were very lucky people!! This world was made a better place thanks to the birth of James Cagney!!! Bless him!!

    Chestyx

  • I will never forget meeting him, never never never. All our greats are gone, and Mr. Cagney was one of the finest human beings we had in this country. How I miss this man. I've told my son, now a 20-yr-old USCGuardian, that he was born on Jimmy Cagney-owned NB land, told him who Jimmy Cagney was, raised him on his morals, humor and class the best I could, and explained to him why it was so important for me to have our mom/son picture taken in front of Geo. M. Cohan's statue in Times Square.

  • Mr. Cagney, how I miss you. I would have given anything to be there that night. BUT 3 years after this, there I was at 21 looking for some insurance files at my job at Jay & Renfro Ins. Brokerage in Newport Beach, CA, and up to the front of our tiny bldg came a long OLD lime green caddy, and out came this old well-dressed gem of a man, and when he walked past me on the way to see my boss, I could not breathe - I thought I was dreaming - mouth open..Mr. C smiled at me and nodded at me!!

  • while cagney was born in america, he is irish...

  • " he never modulated for the camera. nothing he did was scaled down, yet there is not a phoney second in his playing. he is THE great movie actor." orson welles. that quote , in effect, is what Cagney was all about. maximum truth but in an improved, styilized manner.

  • I love James Cagney; grew up watching his movies on TV. Amazing man. One of those individuals who come along once in a century.

  • Amazing. Just pure class. Love ya Jim!

  • "I'm a wreck"

    LOL. Hardly, Jim. Hardly.

What a class act. His middle name should've been GH. G for great and H for humility.

  • professional againstor!thats brilliant.

    me too.

    cagney-truly inspirational.

  • Why watch any other AFI tribute when you've seen the best of the best ?

Jimmy, we love and miss you.
