The term Northern soul was coined by a southerner who was visiting a club in the north of england and writing a review for Blues and Soul, where the Kids had taken the soul scene well before he had visited so the love of "soul" has always been there, naming northern made it stand out more.
I love Soul, be it rare on small rare productions labels or Stax and Motown,
Whenever I think or talk about this tune, very early in my own personal memories of Soul music, I think of it as an operatic Aria. The strength of Laura's voice set against such an orchesterial masterclass lends me to such a view. Love this record. Opera you can dance to (and I did =D ).
Not actually "Motown Magic" at all, as "To Win Your Heart" was originally a Ric-Tic recording - as was the San Remo Golden Strings instrumental.
The version of "Festival Time" released on Gordy was a re-recording made after Berry Gordy bought out Ric-Tic C.1968. (That's how Edwin Starr, J.J. Barnes and the Fantastic Four ended up at Motown!)
Both vocal and instrumental later became classics of the early UK Northern Soul scene, alongside many other Ric-Tic/Golden World recordings.
Absolute Northern Soul classic from the early days of the scene. Hearing gems like this and Denise LaSalle's "Love Reputation" was worth the long travelling distances!
Met LL in NY - in the remake of this track she changed the words I asked her about it and she had no idea what I was talking about! I can't find the original on a cd which is a shame as the remake annoys me coz the new wording makes no sense.
Born Laura Rundless and recorded on the Ric-Tic recording label this gospel style Northern Soul monster became a hit at The Mecca(Highland Room)in 1971.Laura went on to record a number of records for Chess,Cotillion,HotWax & Invictus record label`s,.ktf.
