This is a great application. I think I might get confused though if I had a bad memory. If the red light is on, does that mean there is a problem (red=danger) or does it mean the door is locked and safe? The red LED could be replaced with a display that would show the words: LOCKED or UNLOCKED. As long as your mother has no problem remember what the red LED means, then no worries. Cool vid.
Thank you. Yes, what you are saying is correct. I made this very quickly but did give it some thought. I considered green but, green means go so does that mean it is locked or unlocked? But, your idea of a display that read "Locked" would end all discussion. I am not sure how much energy that would use up though. To be honest, she remembers the red means locked..."most" of the time, but not always. She is 82 and gets confused easily.
thats great, actually putting this circuit to a use. just for further refenece they make a small reed switch at radio shack, its part number is Model: 275-233, just for refence, there alot smaller than door alarm, and dont require as much magnetism. great job
Thanks man, I do appreciate the kind words. Thanks for the info on the reed switch...I didn't even try Radio shack as my local store carries next to nothing it seems. The best part about this circuit, and remember it is not hotrodded in any way, is the battery longevity. This works very well in this application. I saw your welding video and, nice job on the yard sale find. What a deal!
All schematics are posted in the joule thief topic area over at Overunitydotcom. (replace the "dot" with a ".") There are many variations of this circuit there but this design is the most simple, basic JT circuit. PM me here if you have any problems finding what you need.
OH AND BY THE WAY, THE NAME JOULE THIEF IS A JEWEL THIEF PREVENTION UNIT. I THINK THESE GUYS COMMENTS HAVE A GOOD IDEA OF MAKING MORE FOR THE PROTECTION OF MORE GOOD PEOPLE IN NEED OF ONE.
All doors should have this. At night before going to bed i physically check all my doors and it would be so much better if i could look down the hall and see a red light instead of walking to physically touch it.
I agree. You should build one of these. Just a little box, AA battery, the basic JT circuit and a reed switch, and a good neo and you are all set. Battery life is excellent. Thanks for your comment.
That's very cool!

Nice job, Bill
I like this application.
Also, I like how you use the reed switch with the magnet.
This is a great idea...
thanks for showing this,

Thank you very much Jeanna. I had to come up with something fast and the old JT circuit was perfect for this.
