Great piece however 9:46 is incorrect Walk this way hit the scene in 1986 on RUN-DMC's Raising Hell album. LL Cool J hit the scene in 1984 w/ I Need A Beat, therefore the Rock & Hip Hop fusion spoken about was RUN-DMC's 1984 hit Rock Box after that LL came on the scene...
That two faced cigar smoking dude at the end is worse than Simon Cowell! Classic Hiphop times, I get none of the buzz from the world of hiphop today. I find it too aggressive, lacking any excitement.
I fucking love the old school scene and conscious/political rap!
btw if any yous want im an upcoming rapper in the underground , got very little views of youtube so i gotta go around spamming shit, don't mean to but it is what it is ... check out my new track all it takes is a couple of minutes of listening you might be feeling my shit! ... /watch?v=r8-1tqmxXVs
@FerrCW...Sorry but I accidentally deleted your question and my original comment so I'll just go ahead and repost it. Your question was, "What is the name of the song that begins at 00:32?" The song is from Notorius B.I.G.( ~aka~ Biggie Smalls) and it's the instrumental version of his 1996 song called "Hypnotize." The "hypnotize" hook was sampled from Doug E. Fresh & Slick Rick's 1985 song called "La Di Da Di."
@shlyanth Thanks for posting this terrific video but I do have to correct your comment above. The "Hypnotize" hook was taken from a Herb Alpert song called "Rise". It's one of the most obvious samples in HipHop history. Sorry, I just wanted to point that out. Good video though and Happy New Year, 2012!
@vinnievegas2000...You're right! I just listened to the song and realized it came out in 1979, which is the same year I was born and I do recall hearing it played on smooth jazz radio before..LOL...much appreciation to you for pointing out the ((ORIGINAL)) official source that it was sampled from...and thanks for watching!
@shlyanth No worries - when I first discovered where that BIG sample came from, my mouth dropped! RISE seems like just a cool jazzy song and then about 3 minutes into it, the beat drops into what clearly is the Hypnotize sample. I DJ about 100 weddings a year and play RISE at every event during dinner. I always point out the sample to whoever wants to listen and they all react the same way I did years ago.
Not to break bad shlyanth but Hip-hop was made by DJ Kool Herc & Africa Bambatta bak N 72'. It's home land is from the south Bronx and that's the double truth ruth.
@FunkMasterRio I believe I did mention in one of the reading slides that DJ Kool Herc is considered the father of Hip Hop and indeed AB had his blueprints all over its foundation as well. I'm also aware of the school of thought on it's origins out of the South Bronx. Thanks for sharing the info and for watching.
@shlyanth Well actually I was just skippin' threw yo vid but I thought I'd mention the yr. By the way you should of named this vid 'The rise of H-H' givin' the yrs you were focing on.' pluse you forgot my dogs Joe Battaan & Pino D'angio. They were the pioneers of H-H & Rap to there people. As far as street dancin' goes, you had to include The Lockers.& Street Scape.
@FunkMasterRio Again, I can only say thank you for sharing the information. The concept of the video was not meant to be a full fledge documentary so there may be names that were not mentioned, but I'm sure people get the overall message. My intention was to just give a brief introduction, but if folks want to dig deeper into who's who behind the origins of hip hop they can choose to do so. You're always invited to make a video response to share further knowledge.
@shlyanth A very well mixed vid none the less. A kool H-Hin' cat like yoself should put together a full lenth Shlyanth style documentary to flex yo knowledge of the HH world. By the way homie what program did u use to make this vid yo??
@blackezi3 No...the entire song would not fall under the genre of Hip Hop, but the voice-over effect that Vincent Price does in Michael Jackson's Thriller is known as "talk rap." Just goes to show you that even MJ was ahead of his time to even add it to the song back in 1982. Thanks for watching.
i'd suggest slowing the timing down on your text snippets. i'm a fast reader; but, i never could get trhough all of them (though i'm only 1/4 way through as i type this)
@dsbsnag Thanks for your suggestion and for watching! An idea might be to pause the video in between reading the text portions. I tried to balance the reading pace at a moderate speed for people who are viewing the video for the first time vs. others who have read through it before and simply want to move on to the sounds and images. If the video is revised in the future, I will surely keep your suggestion in mind!
Hip Hop isn't just one certain lifestyle...some might say..oh wearing xxl tshirts and baggie pants are hip..but back in the 80s..wearing tight pants that didnt sag..adidas sneakers, kangol hats and a gold chain were the shit..
I am very happy to see that you've not only the knowledge but the true meaning and those who paved the way for the artists today, thanks for my trip down memory lane! Thank you for putting this together the whole 14mins..I was glued to the video.
@shlyanth I'm so glad u were able to show everybody that Hip Hop & R&B are so closely related. New Edition, Teena Marie, and so many other R&B artists embraced Hip Hip at an early age-including the late great Michael Jackson. He even understood what REAL Hip Hop was. Peace!
