I don't know enough about the science to have any theories but one thing is for sure, I'm old enough to remember a period in time before the mid to late nineties when this phenomena of persistent contrails expanding into almost total artificial cloud cover did NOT exist.

Contrail formation is a factor of temperature- if a plane flies thru a slightly warmer patch of air the trail will stop forming

Contrail persistence is a factor of humidity- if plane ascends/descends into drier air the trail won't persist...or if 2 planes are at different altitudes w/diff temp/humidity...

"normal" contrails have been known to persist & spread under the right atmospheric conditions...the basic science is that if the air is humid enough (saturated with respect to ice) the contrail cannot dissipate- this is well understood.
