Hi Jenna just a quick line to U. Everything looks & sounds great but, your mike is set to fine or U have an open mike some where. As U can hear table talk and glasses clinking so, fix that & life is GROOVY!!!
This is just wonderful! I was a bit on the fence w/ the monkey at the beginning THEN I saw/listened to how u put it all together - BRILLIANT! Love your playing & nothing but respect on your creativity. A little note so u can make a small fortune: why not package these sounds as "octave" samples for drummers like myself that play the drumset but incorporate electronic pads & want to trigger "hapi" sounds? I might not buy the drum(b/c I can't play it with sticks live) but I would buy the samples.
I love the hang but it's too hard to get and quite frankly I'm starting to be sick of Panart's attitude to make one for somebody... gotta be a friend or a good musician etc... they are keeping away from many motivated and passionate hands with this elitist ways... I'm thinking of getting a hapi instead; sure it doesn't sound the same at all but hell, even the bellart and halo are just hard to get still. Imagine a citar being impossible to get because of an attitude like that... what a waste!!
@aldar98 try looking into an American pan studio called Pantheon Steel. I know they have been in the process of creating their own line of Hangs, but it seems they are really taking their time with it to get it right. I've been told they will be significantly cheaper then their European counterparts.
very cool video - one of my favourites... i love how you've included "your percussion friends"... very well done... and some day i'd love to own one of these beautiful drums! ...to the sacred drum's loving spirit!... weaver (((o)))
i played this along with a few of your other vids all at the same time with different volume levels and i think i might have come up with something trueley amazing, it needs some work on audio and visuals . loving your work
I love this video. I'm having much fun w/ my resurrected HAPI. An old friend's returned. I'm using a firmer hand, & different styles, keeping the beat, louder. I get in 2 the feel of letting the music flow from within. That's the key, not 2 get caught up in being good as someone else, but being good as I can B. U are my inspiration, along w/ Evelyn Glennie. I'm listening w/ my heart. I <3 my HAPI! Thanks 4 saving my lost "friend". I had tears in my eyes when it arrived at my door.
Sometimes I can get a kind of harmonic sound from the note that is below where the logo is, which I think is coming from the resonance of what the body of the drum is tuned to.
Oh... John, you are amazing. The Hapi drum (this very one! Yay!) was just delivered to me today! We've been playing it all over the office. Expect a lot of orders from folks in Ohio! You've enriched my musical life!
Dude, you really have a way with music, don't you? I really love your music and the instruments you use...little unorthodox as far as I am concerned, but I DO love them! Keep it up dude
Aaaawesome video John! It's pure entertainment, fun, humorous while showcasing your unique hapi musical abilities! I love the oh so cute monkey business in the back-up band - their timing is superb and snappy and you can sure make hapi talk! You're a rare musical gem. 5 Stars for Awesome!
I've been waiting for a new vid. you need to put your 'hapi moments ' on a cd. I would buy it. I have your 'first in flight' cd and i listen to it all the time, but i really love the sounds you create with the hapi drum. ;)
Hapi drums are so cool. You are a very innovative and creative person! I might buy a hapi, but I don't have enough time to dedicate to one right now. Possibly during the summer......
Way to go John, I have been waiting for this! Great job sounds so mellow and relaxing. Love that monkey, had one when I was a kid. John, bring on some more.
Dang, if only these things weren't a few hundreds dollars!... look like they'd make great toys for small children. Make plenty of (non-annoying) noise, easy to use, safe'n'solid construction.
Some of those little runs, especially @ 1:23 I wanted to hear repeated once before being incorporated back into the main melody. Though I can appreciate why you didn't. Perhaps because that's what would have been expected, and you are trying to rebuild and mix your moments new with each movement....If that makes sense.
I'm sure there are proper music terms that I'm not aware of that would explain better.
Great work on the video also. Big fan of the monkeys.
The monkey scares the shit out of me!!!

Is that mic a Shure SM57? And have you tried micing it up with a nice condenser...could potentially sound a lot clearer and better :)

How do the monkeys move, they're not puppets are they?
kathrynh89 2 years ago 2
Is that monkey who's mic'd is he really playing the rhythm in time? Is he really what you hear on the recording?
kathrynh89 2 years ago
Yes, it's the monkey playing the sound you hear, but the syncing was done after, during the video editing. He keeps better time than me though :)

Cool! I am very, very pleased with my E-Major Hapi drum. You're amazing, dude!
I have a question.. is there any way for a Hapi drum to produce a harmonic tone like with guitars at the 12th fret?

Sometimes I can get a kind of harmonic sound from the note that is below where the logo is, which I think is coming from the resonance of what the body of the drum is tuned to.

how many octaves do you get? how much does this cost roughly? it resembles the Hang Drum. Where is this one from?
