i do this drill you did god but wat i do is i when i slide over i spred my pads out alot so i get to the puck easier. It's easier to do that with tps pads too cause they give your a wider butterfly
Good drill, but be aware... you're leaning on your recovery when you slide into the second shot, keep your body upright, balanced and square in order maximize coverage. Lastly, keep your lead pad flush along the ice when you come across, a goal along the ice is the one that let's your team down, if the guy goes cheddar and you did all these things right, then look into having active hands as you slide across.
I used to have this drill when I was a floorball goalie for our university team. A floorball goalie is basicly like a hockey goalie without the stick and gloves and his normal position is down on his knees. The floor in our practice hall was really bad with a lot of friction though and the shots came so fast that there was no time to get up from my knees so I had to push myself around back and forth with my knees sticking to the ground like sandpaper. That was a pretty brutal drill.
I think that just said more about the quality of the floorball players across the pond than anything else. When you play a couple of divisions below what's probably the best floor ball league in the world it's faster and more technical than a lot of hockey. I've played hockey too but from a goalie perspective I'd say that floorball was the more challenging of the two because in hockey most people only know how to deke down on the ice, not a foot up in the air.
If I talk about a 'floorball league' I'm not saying that the league is called 'floorball' just as I wouldn't call NHL a 'NHL league' but a hockey league if anything. The sport in this video is called hockey just like the sport I was talking about a month ago is called floorball. You understand?
Oh, didn't realize that you were wondering what floorball was, lol. That sounds like it though I think that there's quite big differences in the northamerican and european versions of it. In any case the goalie doesn't have a stick or any gloves and the net is a bit smaller. Butterfly position is the 'neutral' position for goalies. Instead of a puck you have a hollow ball with holes in it.
@hockeymatt1994 It's really light actually. It's made of plastic and it's hollow with holes in it. I actually almost broke my thumb too earlier this week though it was because of some miscommunication with one of my d-men. He tried to jump over me and landed on one foot right on the thumb. The nail got bent outwards 90° on the middle so it looked really funny. You take a lot of hits and stuff to your hands and fingers so I'm thinking about getting some gloves now actually.
@hockeymatt1994 lol, nice team mates. :) Yeah, you have a helmet (basicly the same a hockey goalie would wear but lighter), a jersey (padded or unpadded, I prefer unpadded), some pants to sliding around with kneepads built into them (though I prefer having some separate ones as well) and a cup to protect the crown jewells. ;)
He's quick and its a hard drill and tiring might I mention. Did perfect if you ask me, Did he let some in? Of course it happens this wouldnt happen non-stop in a game situation so its great practice for rebounds and reactions.
I agree STMIKES, This goalie keeps his stick in the 5 hole throughout the sequence and does not let it stray left or right. I would take this goailie in a second.
scherboy, shut the fuck up, that goalie is pretty good, the drill was fucking hard, ive done it too, and i let some pucks in, and i fucking play AAA, the goalie wasnt slow, he was quick, i bet u dont even play hockey, ur probly just a fat ass who critisizes videos all day like a dirty cunt fuck
holy shit u dumb buttfuck, u play college division 3, ur good.......but fucking retarted, obviously u dont fucking play college division 3 bcuz if u did, u'd no that this goalie isnt fucking slow, holy shit u dumb cunt
@stmikes31 I'm a goalie too and yes I agree. Those pucks are being shot well before he's set. That's the kind of drill that will burn your legs out quick. and it's not like those are slow shots he was facing.
No way in hell are these french clowns today better than Richter, Vanbiesbrook, Barasso, Hextall, Fuhr, Brodeur, Cujo....none of those guys played the style these guys played today. They knew how to read and react, instead of just waiting for the guy to look like hes going to shoot, then go down in the butterfly and rely on their huge equipment to get in the way. It's a shame they teach kids this crap because if they aren't 6'4'' they are making themselves smaller in the net. This style is awful
I agree with you, and I disagree. When used properly the butterfly style is effective and beautiful. Luongo, Giguere, and Turco are the best butterfly goalies in the league.
I do, however, know what you are getting at, my favourite goalie is Billy Smith.
I do play butterfly, but I make many saves standing up.
nothing wrong with that at all. but there is something very wrong with going down when the shot is headed over the net.
there are definitely times to use the butterfly, i just cant stand the goalies who have only one move, which is to butterfly no matter what. They look like morons when they get beat high. You watch, in a few years there will be a movement back to the old school, hybrid style that Hextall and Richter etc played. You will again see goalies doing splits and kick saves.
I try to stick to hybrid, but i havn't played long and all I do is drop-in, so i'm still learning to be less reliant on the butterfly. Hell yes to Billy Smith by the way!
no pal. the butterfly style has made every goalie cookie cutter. huge equipment and the butterfly style has ruined this position. Old school standup isnt the way to go, but a combination of standing and going down. Why should one go down on high shots?? why?? dont you worry, ill be right back to debate this more. in no way are the goalies of today better than the goalies of say, ten years ago. you cant even tell goalies apart anymore because they all play the same way.
wow is that why the best goalies in the world use it? hmm lets think about it the best goalies in the wourlds opinion or your opinion the butterfly style is 10 time more effective then the stand up, come back when you say something useful
wow this butterfly style is horrible. there is no need to go down on these shots...no need whatsoever. this style is ruining the position of goaltending because the goalies are lazy and just look to go down when the shooter is ready to release. this is really sickening to see this.
yeah. im 16 playing AAA and my coach tell me in practice to stay up on ever shot. Then later he says go down when needed. It helps a lot. Pisses me off when i see a shot go over the net and the goalie goes down.
playing goalie is 90% angles, it is way more important to understand where you are in the net then how fast you can get to the puck, the only thing you a practicing is one-timers which happen maybe once a game
ohh ok yea jus keep ur glove n block up and shoulders square..and push off hard with which ever foot ur pushing off of...my 14u goalie had probs with this drill too. bu good luck
@fleury2000 Wow ur an idiot. Doesnt work on anything........ How bout recovery? Just throwin that out there. Your probably some piece of shit Bantam A goalie who thinks he is hot shit.

GREAT HOCKEY VIDEO!! To see 2 other great hockey videos, just click on my name. The new one is for my upcoming hockey book which will be released in October and has the Foreword written by Keith Primeau!
"The reason goalies used to use dull skates comes from when stand up goalies needed to slide side to side on their skates. With todays butterfly goalies, it is necesary to have sharp skates so that you are able to get not only the proper edge for push-offs, but to be able to stop on a dime. Although it is possible to play with dull skates, once you learn the proper technique for movment... using sharpened skates will reduce fatigue, and improve you overall game." -My skate sharpener
"Good Goalies start with textbook moves, Excellent Goalies End with their own Books"- Unknown. Not bad for a person thats 14. ID like to see him in a real game though.( Practice tells half of the story, but edits all of it)
hey man I have a quick question for ya I've always wanted attend a goatenders camp but never have been able to buy the gear due to financial issues if I were to attend a camp would they provide it or not?
@MFFL2008 If you want to buy things new, although your comment is old and you might have already bought stuff, try goaliemonkeycom. they have some great prices on goalie pads
Yah I'm a goalie and I perfer my skate to be more dull then sharp and also. I've done this drill many times and it does wear you done put when I did it all you really had to do was get into the groove of it then it's simple skating back and fourth.
1 walks in from the corner and then 2 goes around the circle and then 3 shoots from the point while 2 and 1 get rebounds/deflections...but thats not nearly as tough as that
This is my pet peeve about some of these goalie drills. It's not just about making the save, it's about REBOUND CONTROL. If you make a blocker save and deflect it to corner, you're supposed to watch it. This spazzy skating stuff is almost useless. Shooters have to wait for him to make the correct save, not just a twitchy one.
This is just one drill we do to work on movement and post-save response/recovery. It is a high tempo drill....18 shots near 30 sec....something you will never see in a game.
A very good goalie should be able to recover in position to every shooter, make the save, control the rebound and recover to next shooter at the pace we do this drill. As you can see it is not easy.
this drill is killer...its hard but who cares if its gunna make you better right? i think it doesnt really matter how late you start...i played my first year of hockey ever as a goalie when i was 14 and i am 16 now and play for a rep team...you just gotta be determined and work hard
alright, you were in the same situation as i am right now. i'm 14 now, and i was wondering if you could point me in the right direction with gear brands and where to get it. and if you could tell me what playing my angles is, that'd be good. respond if you could...
Nice, this drill is hard, and a quick question about your pads, did u keep that strap that attaches to the theighboard? And if not can u get a pair of those pads with out that strap? Cause do u feel that it just adds friction? Was there anything u changed about ur pads? If anyone can help me thanks.
Personnaly I kept tightboards, if you need to remove them it's quite easy, but I guess it's not really what you asked !? I don't feel any restriction from tightboards, if you do then try to loosen your upper strap and make sure your knee stays deep in the cradle
These are the latest vaughn velocity pads, i didn't change anything. All straps are loose behind my legs except for the wide velcro strap. Go to their web site to see a pic from behind.
I have an old brand of Itechs, 7.8 vamps, one of the earlier styles of butterfly pads, and I was talking about the small piece of padding thats on the upper inside part of your leg. It has a strap attached to it that you then buckle. I was kinda just wondering because some of my other friends have these pads but some take this piece off and some don't so I was just wondering. I can now see in this video that you did keep this strap on.
well my coach sort of makes me do a drill like this except they put 1 other person on the side of the net and make me practic wrap around saves but im not aloud to slide over and i have to do a turtle save across the crease you know like you see dominick hasek do when he decides to stay in the net and not knock no1 off of the puck on a breakaway
um...yah if you're 16 or so right now and you don't know how to skate and not playing in a top-notch highschool or AAA travel team...yah it may be too late lol.
But fuck who knows. maybe you're a prodigy at heart. just get out there and try
Jim Kerry who was top goalie for the caps in the 90's started at 18 as well... if your a natural its possible.. just enjoy it.. play in a league and have some fun
for the record...on this specific drill we worked on a butterfly slide save (blocking save) and the post-save recovery/response. the multiple shots make it that more difficult since u start to get tired....legs burn.
Butterfly style is the new era, there arnt many good goalies you can find out there who are playing hybrid, besides marty, hasek and who ever else. Bottom line, majority of goals scored in the NHL are at knees height and below, butterfly style is the best way to get the most optimal coverage you can down low (the bottom of the net). It isnt necessary to go down on every shot, but its not a bad thing either. As long as you have quick hands and feet.
Scramble goalies like Hasek are pretty much gone from PRO hockey. u need to be an amazing athlete to use this style and u need good D in front to clear the rebounds.
if u were to do this same drill with a scramble style goalie he would be dead after a few shots since they tend to fully commit themselves to make a save and need time to recover. goalies today train to make the save, control/direct the rebound, post-save response (follow rebound and set in position).
I agree, basically these keepers often make saves with style, which attract the average hockey fan. Like a glove save can be done technically, smoothly keeping the puck secured or scrambled with style 'for the crowd'.
Anyway, nice job kid and I luv your pads and design
I disagree with u guys, basic drills like these will get you make the save. I agree he shouldnt do full butterfly drills every time but overall he did a good job.
i def agree with jercohen, all this textbook goaltending crap is retarded, y not forget the b.s. and stop the puck, it seemed to work for hasek back in the day
this is a routine drill, and if you had the ability to skate, it wouldn't be that difficult. what is it with some goalies going down on absolutely everything? it's called hybrid, and unless you're patrick roy..a master of the butterfly..you aren't going to be very successful solely using that tactic.
i do this drill its the bomb, it just kills ur legs

this drill isnt killer. the only reason it looks hard is cuz this goalie has no control therfore not stopping the pucks.
KhoKlatemilk 3 years ago
where do you see no control?
BWEIDEL 3 years ago
I agree with BWEIDEL as well as that drill gets very tiring very fast. If you had any idea what you were talking about you would know that.
ssgoalie1 3 years ago
he is losing his balance all of the place which is making his pushes crap.

This drill maybe gets exhausting after a while but isn´t it what it is for?
Antonechkin 3 years ago
yo im a butterfly style goalie but i want others opinions and stuff like whats better butterfly ofr the basic stance?
JakandDaxter12 3 years ago
Use a style that works for you and build up on that. Analyze every game you play, keep track of your stats and work on your weak points.
Biggest thing that has improved my game that last few years is rebound control and eliminating the second shot!

hey man I have a quick question for ya I've always wanted attend a goatenders camp but never have been able to buy the gear due to financial issues if I were to attend a camp would they provide it or not?
MFFL2008 3 years ago
don't think so.....trying renting stuff or buying used.
vaughnstar 3 years ago
@MFFL2008 If you want to buy things new, although your comment is old and you might have already bought stuff, try goaliemonkeycom. they have some great prices on goalie pads
Tayclamation 1 year ago
Yah I'm a goalie and I perfer my skate to be more dull then sharp and also. I've done this drill many times and it does wear you done put when I did it all you really had to do was get into the groove of it then it's simple skating back and fourth.
breeanned 3 years ago
i have done that drill before! you gotta be in-shape fast with sharp skates! can be very exhausting lol.. but there is more extreme drills than that
crazyraqoon734 3 years ago
what do you get your skates sharpened at

Nice Pads and that is a terrible drill
I do a drill we call 1 2 3,
1 walks in from the corner and then 2 goes around the circle and then 3 shoots from the point while 2 and 1 get rebounds/deflections...but thats not nearly as tough as that
37goalie37 3 years ago
it's not a terrible drilll...it's just a hard drill.

I sharpen to 3/4"....as much as possible by the same place and person.
Yes, it is very very important to me !!
vaughnstar 3 years ago
Whered you get your pads? and how much were they and what size. and your pretty goood.
goaltenda34 3 years ago
I got the entire set, pads, blocker and trapper for $2000 from Source for Sports in Toronto. Best deal I found.
Pads are 34"+2".
Thanks...
vaughnstar 3 years ago
what do you like about them??
goaltenda34 3 years ago
They flex well, good rebound control, comfortable, suit my style and don't wear out very much (on the ice 3 to 4 times a week).
vaughnstar 3 years ago
This is my pet peeve about some of these goalie drills. It's not just about making the save, it's about REBOUND CONTROL. If you make a blocker save and deflect it to corner, you're supposed to watch it. This spazzy skating stuff is almost useless. Shooters have to wait for him to make the correct save, not just a twitchy one.
spankyman86 3 years ago
This is just one drill we do to work on movement and post-save response/recovery. It is a high tempo drill....18 shots near 30 sec....something you will never see in a game.
A very good goalie should be able to recover in position to every shooter, make the save, control the rebound and recover to next shooter at the pace we do this drill. As you can see it is not easy.
vaughnstar 3 years ago
No drill is supposed to be easy...

Hes really good but He gives up to easy and he tires out after a little while....also his pads look to big....

this drill is killer...its hard but who cares if its gunna make you better right? i think it doesnt really matter how late you start...i played my first year of hockey ever as a goalie when i was 14 and i am 16 now and play for a rep team...you just gotta be determined and work hard
Mrnockers181 4 years ago
alright, you were in the same situation as i am right now. i'm 14 now, and i was wondering if you could point me in the right direction with gear brands and where to get it. and if you could tell me what playing my angles is, that'd be good. respond if you could...
daniel1234543 4 years ago
Nice, this drill is hard, and a quick question about your pads, did u keep that strap that attaches to the theighboard? And if not can u get a pair of those pads with out that strap? Cause do u feel that it just adds friction? Was there anything u changed about ur pads? If anyone can help me thanks.
goalie7777777 4 years ago
Personnaly I kept tightboards, if you need to remove them it's quite easy, but I guess it's not really what you asked !? I don't feel any restriction from tightboards, if you do then try to loosen your upper strap and make sure your knee stays deep in the cradle
bacongras 4 years ago
These are the latest vaughn velocity pads, i didn't change anything. All straps are loose behind my legs except for the wide velcro strap. Go to their web site to see a pic from behind.
What kind of pads do u have?
vaughnstar 4 years ago
I have an old brand of Itechs, 7.8 vamps, one of the earlier styles of butterfly pads, and I was talking about the small piece of padding thats on the upper inside part of your leg. It has a strap attached to it that you then buckle. I was kinda just wondering because some of my other friends have these pads but some take this piece off and some don't so I was just wondering. I can now see in this video that you did keep this strap on.
goalie7777777 4 years ago
the "cheater" pad to close up the 5-hole...my strap is very loose on this.
Some goalies take it off because it gets stuck under their goalie pants and bothers them a lot.
vaughnstar 4 years ago
This is a type of drill that Kiprusoff does before every game.

Cool....
vaughnstar 4 years ago
well my coach sort of makes me do a drill like this except they put 1 other person on the side of the net and make me practic wrap around saves but im not aloud to slide over and i have to do a turtle save across the crease you know like you see dominick hasek do when he decides to stay in the net and not knock no1 off of the puck on a breakaway
RSnerd34 4 years ago
This is one of my favorite drills.

jesus that drill has got to suck
cdubbs29 4 years ago
is this drill mainly to improve butterfly a bit getting up quick and mainly reflexes right?
gojacketsgo61 4 years ago
well goaltending is all about right decision, strength, eye on puck and flexibility
guys i'm 16 right now and i don't know how to skate is it too late for me to join some league?
323541433 4 years ago
never too late to play hockey!
vaughnstar 4 years ago
well wt if i wanna go to nhl and i'm like 1 or 2 years late like overaged
323541433 4 years ago
um...yah if you're 16 or so right now and you don't know how to skate and not playing in a top-notch highschool or AAA travel team...yah it may be too late lol.
But fuck who knows. maybe you're a prodigy at heart. just get out there and try
SpiritMatthias 4 years ago
reality check.....nhl...mmmm..that's a pretty high goal.
by 15 to 16 you should be playing at an elite level...

Khabibulin started goalie at age 18.
Jim Kerry who was top goalie for the caps in the 90's started at 18 as well... if your a natural its possible.. just enjoy it.. play in a league and have some fun

.....coach wants us to move fast to the next shooter....players don't wait very long.
vaughnstar 4 years ago
in the game there not going to take it easy on u
haneythegod 4 years ago
for the record...on this specific drill we worked on a butterfly slide save (blocking save) and the post-save recovery/response. the multiple shots make it that more difficult since u start to get tired....legs burn.
vaughnstar 4 years ago
Butterfly style is the new era, there arnt many good goalies you can find out there who are playing hybrid, besides marty, hasek and who ever else. Bottom line, majority of goals scored in the NHL are at knees height and below, butterfly style is the best way to get the most optimal coverage you can down low (the bottom of the net). It isnt necessary to go down on every shot, but its not a bad thing either. As long as you have quick hands and feet.
fleury1788 4 years ago
Scramble goalies like Hasek are pretty much gone from PRO hockey. u need to be an amazing athlete to use this style and u need good D in front to clear the rebounds.
if u were to do this same drill with a scramble style goalie he would be dead after a few shots since they tend to fully commit themselves to make a save and need time to recover. goalies today train to make the save, control/direct the rebound, post-save response (follow rebound and set in position).
vaughnstar 4 years ago
I agree, basically these keepers often make saves with style, which attract the average hockey fan. Like a glove save can be done technically, smoothly keeping the puck secured or scrambled with style 'for the crowd'.
Anyway, nice job kid and I luv your pads and design
bacongras 4 years ago
ya, but its important to judge the situation and make a move, not jus blindly go down
haneythegod 4 years ago
this drill we go down, others we stay up....in game we decide the right save.
vaughnstar 4 years ago
right
haneythegod 4 years ago
I disagree with u guys, basic drills like these will get you make the save. I agree he shouldnt do full butterfly drills every time but overall he did a good job.
bacongras 4 years ago 2
i def agree with jercohen, all this textbook goaltending crap is retarded, y not forget the b.s. and stop the puck, it seemed to work for hasek back in the day
gunitsniper2700 4 years ago
....there's a method to the madness!!! and it continues to work for me.
vaughnstar 4 years ago
this is a routine drill, and if you had the ability to skate, it wouldn't be that difficult. what is it with some goalies going down on absolutely everything? it's called hybrid, and unless you're patrick roy..a master of the butterfly..you aren't going to be very successful solely using that tactic.
jercohen 4 years ago
wow u should take this off until u get better then put somethin good on
dculver203 4 years ago
